30 Ways To Reach Peak Creativity On Instagram Stories

$

I'll admit it: I wasn't crazy about Instagram Stories when they launched in August. They looked like a Snapchat copycat — and not a very good one at that. Where was the dog face? The geotags? The option to set up a birthday filter?

For an app that I've always loved for its creativity and viewed as an artistic hub, Instagram was letting me down. I thought Stories would have a brief surge and then fizzle out, relegated to the land of tech failures.

But as an increasing numbers of people (100 million daily to date) jumped on board, I realized that maybe Instagram Stories really was a complement to Snapchat, and not a replacement. I stopped comparing them so much and dove in headfirst, determined to master the platform. Here, 30 tips and tricks for turning any Instagram Story into thing of beauty — or, at the very least, one of many artfully drawn thought bubbles and color blocks.

Change Up Your Font

With it's new font mode, Instagram is introducing a brand new way to add some character to your Stories. Simply swipe left from the regular camera mode and tap the font name at the top of the screen to switch up the style.

Get Giphy
Animate your Stories with new Giphy stickers. Simply take your photo or video, tap the sticker drawer, select GIF and choose from the options. Note: You can never have too many GIFs.

Double Up On Live

Instagram Stories debuted a new feature that makes it possible to bring a friend into your Live broadcast. Simply tap the faces logo that appears in the bottom right-hand corner after starting your broadcast and invite a friend to join. They'll need to accept on their end, but once they do, the two of you can host your chat simultaneously.

Straighten Out

Center your text and stickers — and ensure everything you add to your image stays in the frame — by following the blue lines. These will appear along the edges and center of the screen to help guide your way.

Customize Your Color

In the past, you were limited to drawing and writing in the colors Instagram Stories provided you with. Now, you can choose a color from your image or video. Simply tap the painting tool or start writing and select the color picker icon on the far left of the color spectrum. Then, drag the droplet shape on-screen to find the color you want to use.

Brighten Up Text

Instead of highlighting one letter at a time to change its color, follow this simple trick. Start by highlighting all of your text. Then, hold one finger on the color to the far right and one on the far right end of your text. Drag both fingers slowly to the left and voilà — you have a rainbow!

Switch On Sharing
Want more eyes on your creative masterpieces? Head to your Story settings (tap the icon in the upper lefthand corner of the camera screen) and toggle on "Allow Sharing." This will let anyone who views your Story share it as a DM with others, expanding your reach. You can always change your mind later on and turn it off.

Make A Live Photo Pop

It's easy to turn any Live photo you took into a Boomerang for your Story. Simply swipe up on the camera screen, pick the photo from your camera roll, and hard press on the screen. If you don't like the Boomerang effect, you can always hard press again to turn the photo back to normal.

Hashtag It
Add a hashtag to your Story to link it to similar content on Instagram. Anyone who watches your story will be able to click the hashtag to see other posts featuring the same hashtag.

Send A Cheeky Reply

Instead of sending a written message in reply to a Story, show how you really feel with a photo, boomerang, or video. Instagram also adds a sticker of the story you're replying to, which you can resize, move around, and draw on for humorous effect.

Courtesy of Instagram.

Go Live...Again

If you want to give your Live video extra life, choose the "share" option that appears after ending your video. This lets you replay the footage on your Story for an extra 24 hours so that friends who didn't catch it in the moment can watch there.

Selfie On
Let your floating head do the talking. To create a selfie sticker that you can place anywhere in any photo, tap your stickers folder in the upper right-hand corner and choose the camera icon. Take your photo. Then, tap the selfie to add a circular white border around the frame and move around as you please.

Take It Back Now, Y'all

Ever wonder what it would be like to brew coffee backwards? Now you can. Reverse the laws of gravity with Instagram Stories' new rewind camera mode. When you open the camera, toggle over to "Rewind." Then, film a video like you normally would and watch the trippy result.

Celebrate The Day

On Wednesdays, we use Instagram Stories stickers. Er, make that every day. In its most recent sticker pack, Instagram Stories rolled out stickers for every day of the week. Go into your stickers on Tuesday and you'll see different offerings than you will on Thursday. For additional options, select a sticker to add to your photo or video, then tap it again to see another style.

Photo: Courtesy of Instagram.

Add More Color

Sometimes a little extra background (color) is needed. After typing your text, tap the "A" text icon in the top middle of the screen to highlight your words. If you don't like how it looks, choose a different color or tap the "A" again to remove it completely.

Add A Geosticker
Snapchat has geofilters and now Instagram Stories has geostickers! The app is just starting to roll out the location based stickers, so for now, you'll only see them available for stories taken in two cities: New York and Jakarta. Whereas Snapchat only lets you pick one geofilter, Instagram Stories lets you add as many stickers as you'd like to your photos or videos.

Stay tuned for news about more cities getting stickers of their own.

Zoom, Baby, Zoom
Why include an inflatable pink flamingo in your Story if nobody notices it? Draw attention to the little fellow by zooming in while filming. As you hold your finger down on the video circle, draw towards the top of the screen to zoom in, and back down to zoom out again.

Video: Madeline Buxton.

Fill 'Er Up
Warning: This one might take a few tries to master, but is every bit as cool as Snapchat's makeshift filters. Select the marker tool and begin to very slowly draw a straight line down the center of the screen. You'll see that line turn into a color block that you can drag to fill the entirety of the screen. Just keep your finger on the screen the entire time.

Video: Madeline Buxton.

Color Change
Why stick with blue when you can have blue and pink? Just highlight the word or letter that you want in a different color and choose from your color palette.

Photo: Madeline Buxton.

Rainbow Brights
At first glance, the color palette of Instagram stories looks as limited as that of Snapchat: just your standard nine-color palette. But if you press down on an individual color you can access the entire color wheel. Take me over the rainbow, Instagram Stories.

Photo: Madeline Buxton.

Ballpoint vs. Felt Tip
Put that pen — er, your finger — to work. Drawing without a stylus isn't easy, but having the option to change up your pen tip helps. Press the far left bubble icon in your color palette to adjust the size.

Bubble Up
Spill it: Changing your pen tip is also an easy way to create a thought bubble. Use a smaller tip to create dots up to one larger bubble, which you can create by using the largest pen tip size possible.

Photo: Madeline Buxton.

Filter That
Stories are like a box of chocolates. You never know which filter you're gonna need. Luckily, you can access many of your Instagram favorites within Stories, simply by swiping to the right after taking your photo or video.

Photo: Madeline Buxton.

Double Duty
Give your color blocks a cellophane-like look (the purple option on top) by just drawing over an image once. Go over it twice to create a completely opaque backdrop, or, start with white on the bottom and layer color over that for the same effect.

Photo: Madeline Buxton

Size Up
No eye-rolling emoji deserves to be as small as a pea. Show it and any text some love by pinching it with your fingers to expand. Or, if you so choose, smaller. The only downside here is that the larger you make your emoji, the more pixelated it will appear. Major eye-roll.

w

Put Your Boomerangs To Work
Cheat the instantaneous system and pull in photos, Boomerangs, and videos (up to 10 seconds long) from your camera roll. Just swipe down on the screen to choose from images taken within the past 24 hours. Unlike Snapchat, where camera roll images appear with a fake-looking border, Instagram makes it look like you're posting everything as it happens. No one needs to know you put your entire story together while on the couch with your feet up and glass of red in one hand.

Boomerang: Madeline Buxton.

Pause, Please
To read the fine print on a photo, or simply take extra time to look at a detailed manicure, just press your finger on the screen. Doing so will pause play. To resume, just lift your finger off the screen.

Photo: Instagram/Eva Chen.

Backtrack
Miss seeing the names of some beauty products? Never fear: Tapping the left of the screen will take you back to the prior image. This, in our opinion, is one major advantage over Snapchat, which will make you watch the whole video again to catch something you might have missed the first time.

Photo: Instagram/Eva Chen.

Make Your Story A Recipe Book
Lauren Conrad discovered one of the coolest uses for Instagram Stories: Step-by-step recipes. Start with the ingredients and walk friends through every part of the delicious (or disastrous?) process. Either way, at least you'll have a Story to remember it by.

Photo: Lauren Conrad.

All The Memories
Like Snapchat Memories, you can set your Instagram Stories account to automatically save all of your photos and videos (if you don't, they disappear after 24 hours). To do this — and to control who can see your stories — go to your settings tab in the upper left corner and move the toggle for "save shared stories" to the right.

"Daith" Piercings Are L.A.'s Most Surprising Beauty Trend

$

“If you’re only going to have three piercings right now, I would do your lobes, your tragus, and your daith,” L.A.’s "It" piercer Brian Keith Thompson told me on the phone this week. “The daith is really popular right now — and [they] look cool all together.”

And if this piercing oracle says it's true, you better believe it. The Body Electri c owner/artist is responsible for constellation piercings, L.A.’s obsession with nipple adornment, and even the latest uptick in the labret (the center of the bottom lip) and the philtrum (he just did FKA Twigs’, but more on that later. Did we mention his client list is stacked with major A-listers?)

So, what are the raddest piercings you need to know about for 2017? When it comes to ears, the daith, rook, forward helix, and tragus are in hot demand — often in artful groupings of three or more. Facial piercing trends are shifting too, with lip piercings becoming more popular and the nostril slowly usurping the septum. (There's a sentence we never thought we'd write.)

As for body? Feel free to blame Beyoncé for this next one. “There was a lull, but we are seeing the navel come back even stronger now,” Thompson says. “Very delicate, thin, dainty rings are big.” No surprise here: The nipple is still huge, too: “I thought that it was going to die down, but I can’t keep barbells in stock right now!” he reports.

Ahead, Thompson walks us through the piercings and combinations that L.A.’s loving.

This story was originally published on February 15, 2017.

Behold: The daith. According to Thompson, it’s having a huge moment in L.A. — and for good reason. Not only does it feel incredibly cool and fresh, but because it's tucked further into your ear than the helix (and less prone to bumping or jostling), many find that it heals better.

“A tragus and a daith look so good together,” Thompson says about his current favorite combo. Here, his client sports multiple lobe piercings featuring the duo.

Thompson notes that regardless of trends, it's important to find a look that works for you. Here, a helix is accented with a rook, a placement right above the daith. (Does anyone else feel like they're playing chess RN?)

His only rule? "You don’t want to do a daith and rook, or either of those with a conch, because it gets a little crowded."

Here, the daith is paired with four lobe piercings to create an eclectic look.

“Constellation piercings are still very big right now,” Thompson told us. Personally, he prefers groupings of three, like these two helix piercings and lobe. (See tons of rad constellation piercings here.)

This look shows how easy it is to incorporate multiple small piercings onto your ear without any overcrowding. The secret? Keep all the jewelry dainty.

@bodyelectrictattoo

Hoops are far more popular than studs right now. “[Hoops] are flying off the shelves,” Thompson says. “I have girls coming in and doing hoops all the way up their ears.”

It's really popular for people to wear a few tiny hoops in their upper-ear cartilage piercings and small studs up the lobe.

@bodyelectrictattoo

The forward helix is also big right now, and looks incredibly cool when paired with just the lobe or outer helix, he says.

“It's crazy how popular the nipple is right now,” Thompson says. “Last night, for example, I did a group of three girls — it’s still a big thing.”

Thanks to the growing popularity of multiple piercings, people are becoming far more educated on how many are possible in each sitting. “People now understand they shouldn’t be getting five or six piercings at one time," he says. His best advice? “Do a couple, let them heal, then come back — it’s far easier to heal three piercings than seven.”

“A stud in the nostril is more popular among those that work in a professional environment, while hoops are a little more artistic," Thompson says, adding that hoops are far more popular for those doing several piercings. “I am seeing a lot of people pairing them up, doing multiples or one on each side," he says.

“I just did a really cool conch with a little baguette from [jewelry designer] Maria Tash,” Thompson says about this piercing. “Hoops are definitely more popular for the conch, but studs are big, too.”

Suspender earrings are also having a moment, and Thompson loves the ones from jewelry designer Smith & Mara.

Thompson always gravitates towards piercings in numerals of three, like this simple helix, lobe, and tragus trio.

FKA Twigs recently flew from London to L.A. just for Thompson to pierce her philtrum. “She said, ‘I can’t believe I came all the way from London just to do this’,” he says with a laugh. Of course, we understand why — the facial piercing had to be perfect.

While this trend might not be for everyone, Thompson predicts that it will have a huge moment this year. Think of it as the cool new Marilyn lip piercing.

“I love the septum on girls, because you can hide it,” Thompson says. “If you’re going to go see Grandma, you can just tuck that shit up."

Here, Bella Thorne shows off the septum piercing — just one of many piercings that she’s gotten from Thompson.

Introducing: the two new facial piercing trends collide in this simple, chic look.

Fair warning from Thompson: The labret trend is not for everyone. “She looks like a badass with it, but it takes a definite type of style to pull it off. And it's tough to heal,” Thompson says. “It’s right in the center of your lip and you’re talking, you’re eating — there is a lot going on and you need to be patient.”

Pro tip: You can get a similar effect with gold liquid liner before you commit.

Finally, a chic new way to cover up old gauge holes.

Way cooler than the pant chains people used to wear in high school...

When everyone else opts for a cuff or hoop, go for the stud.

Want more piercing inspiration and tips from Thompson — including how to make your new holes heal faster? Right this way.

Should Your Period Affect Your Skin-Care Routine?

The next time you find yourself immobilized on the couch, weeping over an animal-rescue group's Instagram feed with an electric heating pad resting on your stomach, a full-size Snickers bar in one hand, and a box of Midol in the other (because that's what all women do when they're on their periods, right?), remember how lucky you are. You're alive; you're fertile; you're not sequestered in a menstrual hut or living in a time or place where tampons either haven't been invented yet or aren't accessible to you. All things considered, from an anthropological standpoint, menstruating is a lot less shitty — and a lot less taboo — now than ever before.

Still, no matter what percentage organic cotton your tampons are or how attuned you might feel to your moon cycle and divine femininity, there's not much you can do about the way your hormonal fluctuations affect your skin. Hormonal birth control can help to regulate; so can spironolactone. But they can only go so far, and that's if you're willing to toy with your endocrine system in the first place. So it makes sense that as the destigmatization of the female body and its bloodier functions progresses, so does the development of skin-care innovations tailored specifically to work with a woman's skin before, during, and after her period.

Available now on its website (and soon to be available at Nordstrom's website and in select stores), Knours. is a new brand created to address the link between a woman's menstrual cycle and the condition of her skin all month long. Its name is derived from its objective: "Know your skin. Period." Drawing inspiration from K-beauty fundamentals, each of the eight initial products in the line (VP of Marketing Jeana Chung says that the brand aims to release new additions every three to six months) focuses on natural, "clean" ingredients that are gentle to sensitive skin, and can be swapped out for one another depending on where you're at in your cycle. (My personal favorite: a facial mist that contains moisturizing squalene and jojoba oils that rise to the top, while the other water-based ingredients sink to the bottom. Give it a shake when your skin is dry and tired for intense moisture, or don't shake when your skin is at its most sensitive to let the aloe vera water and botanical extracts soothe on their own.)

There's also Amareta, a "hormonal-based" beauty and wellness brand out of California that uses primarily plant-based ingredients to formulate its luxe holistic skin-care products. As with Knours., Amareta wants you to embrace your natural cycle and adapt to it so as to care for your skin differently depending on the time of month — and, as dermatologist Jenna Queller, MD, FAAD of MFC Dermatology confirms, there's something to that approach. "Being aware of your cycle and how it affects your skin is the key to working with your skin, rather than against it," Dr. Queller says. And when it comes down to it, the entire principle is based on being "in tune" with your body, and how your cycle affects your complexion.

One thing that Knours. has that most skin-care brands, hormonal-based or otherwise, don't: an app. It's totally free, and it's meant to replace your current period-tracking app regardless of whether you use the Knours. products. You plug in information about your last period, how long it usually lasts each month, and your skin type, and it analyzes and predicts the associated changes in your skin's condition and your mood while creating a customized calendar... and recommending which Knours. products you might want to consider integrating into your routine. Here’s to getting to know your skin almost as well as you know your heating pad.

What To Expect: Hand-poked tattoos with intricate details and plenty of minimalist designs

Rosa Bluestone Perr, a Brooklyn-based tattoo artist, specializes in dainty, hand-poked tattoos. If you like delicate floral motifs, whimsical animal designs, or dainty script — this is your girl.

But you won't just find teeny-tiny tattoos on Perr's feed. Her clean, minimalist style also translates to larger pieces like this one.

The Artist To Follow:@mnsantanatattoo

What To Expect: Black and grey, fine-line tattoos

Minimalism is dominating mainstream tattoo designs these days, but the art you'll discover on Santana's page is nothing like what you'll find on Pinterest. Her art can be smaller than the tip of your finger, but the details are infinitely better than some larger tattoos we've seen elsewhere.

Despite the fact that the tattoo world is primarily male dominated, female artists like Santana are taking over the world of line work and Insta-worthy art.

The Artist To Follow:@zihee_tattoo

What To Expect: Watercolor designs with bursts of bright colors

It's the shop behind the industry's latest trend, helix tattoos, but there is so much more to this portfolio. In true Zihee form, the artists almost always use a rainbow spectrum of colors that makes the art pop.

You can also expect florals, florals, and more florals on this page. Craving an eternal reminder of spring? Zihee is the spot to look for inspiration.

The Artist To Follow: @curtmontgomerytattoos

What To Expect: Heavy-handed lines, the basic bones of a shape or design

Curt Montgomery is no stranger to art that pushes the envelope, making his feed the perfect place to find unique inspiration. Think: Two mouths kissing or a cat pawing at the moon. These are just a few of the non-traditional concepts featured on the artist's feed, but each one is far from cheesy or cartoonish.

Montgomery has tatted celebrities like Halsey and if there's anyone who can make a body saddling a crescent moon look cool, it's him.

The Artist To Follow:@tealeigh

What To Expect: Stick-and-poke tattoos that don't look DIY

While a lot people have opinions about the stick-and-poke method, there's no reason to count it out before pulling some inspo. When done by an experienced pro in a professional environment, the dainty art is a great way to wear just about every image, from hands to plants to animals.

No, stick-and-pokes aren't always minimalist designs. With Tea, you're more than welcome to go big or go home with your art and imagination.

The Artist To Follow:@soltattoo

What To Expect: Intricate details and dainty ink of almost anything

We've never seen a tattoo artist make a puppy tattoo seem so appealing. Instead of leaning on the side of a caricature, every single example of work from this Seoul-based shop is worthy of being framed and put on the wall.

These dainty pieces are loaded with vibrant color and fine lines that fall somewhere on the spectrum of minimal watercolor and realism — just on a much smaller scale.

The Artist To Follow:@basic.ink

What To Expect: Mystical designs, warm colors, and detailed line work

This Istanbul-based studio is all about out-of-this-world art. Think: stargazers, space stations, and everything beyond the skyline. Even better, the feed offers up designs that mix black line work and colorful fill-ins.

Let your imagination run free with when viewing this feed, it'll help you decide if you're ready for something from the heavens.

The Artist To Follow: @ thecrayoner

What To Expect: Petite prints, whimsical fonts and lines.

The Paris-based artist is your go-to for minimal lines on a larger scale. Think: back of the arm, chest, or thigh placements.

Despite the fact that the majority of the designs are thin and simple, the overall style isn't quite as minimal as JonBoy or Dr. Woo. However, if you're looking for script, we suggest you hit this salon up the next time you find yourself in Europe.

Our Favorite Pore Strips On The Market

If you had told us 15 years ago that we'd be sticking the equivalent of duct tape to our nostrils, forehead, and chin, then ripping them off and furtively examining the remains, we might have mistaken you for someone who was a little too into The X-Files.

But, what we once thought of as beauty sci-fi, we now look to as a skin-care necessity: Pore strips are one of those inventions we didn't really know we needed, but now that we've experienced them, we don't think we can live without them.

Once established though, where could this brave new world of pore de-clogging really evolve to? Deeper, apparently: The latest strips on the market boast deep-cleaning claims that make them sound like a Roto-Rooter for your nostrils. Read on for all the dirty details on our favorites and to see how their skin-excavating claims fare.

If you're trying to get some gunk out of your pores, this charcoal strip will lend a helping hand.

Sephora Collection Charcoal Nose Strip, $3, available at Sephora.

Tea tree extract and kaolin clay pull out sebum and temporarily shrink your pores. We slap one on before every big night out.

Formula 10.0.6 Down To The Pores, $5.99, available at Ulta Beauty.

Stubborn blackheads don't stand a chance against this double whammy treatment. First, you press the dry patch onto your wet nose and wait 10 minutes before removing it. Then, you follow that up with the wet patch for another 10 minutes. Each is infused with pore-tightening witch hazel, purifying sage, and redness-reducing tea tree extract.

Dr. Jart+ Pore Master Patch, $7.50, available at Sephora.

To enact the serum solution in Benefit's pore mask, simply push the "press" button and it will release into the pack (this little trick is to ensure you get the most out of your ingredients). The strip can be placed on your nose, forehead, chin area — basically anywhere you need some extra pore-cleansing. It's even dual-sided, so after about 10 minutes, you can use the textured side to exfoliate.

Benefit Instant Wipeout Pore Cleansing Masks, $32, available at Ulta Beauty.

Not satisfied with a one-step blackhead strip? This pack features three steps to soften skin, remove the pesky suckers, and then tighten skin.

Holika Holika Pig Nose Clear Blackhead 3-Step Kit, $3, available at Peach & Lily.

Point of warning: You have to apply water to your nose (or forehead) before using this product to help it stay put. It takes about three to four minutes for it to begin hardening, and you'll feel a faint cooling sensation. After about 15 minutes, remove the strip and see all of the gunk it extracted from your nose (if you're into that sort of thing).

Bonus: These strips come recommended by a top celeb makeup artist, too.

Bioré Deep Cleansing Pore Strips Combo, $9.49, available at Walgreens.

This Boscia nose strip is made with a special kind of de-clogging clay to help deep-cleanse your skin. One qualm we have with drugstore pore products is that they never fully harden — making them difficult (and painful) to pull off. But you don't have to worry about that with this black strip. After you remove the sheet, your skin will feel instantly smooth and clean. A major plus, especially during a pore-punishing summer.

Boscia Pore Purifying Black Strips, $28, available at Sephora.

This packet comes with three different products for you to apply one after the other. After cleansing your face, apply the first sheet and remove after about 20 minutes. Next, wet the skin and apply the second strip for roughly 15 minutes, then take off. Lastly, put on the third and final product, leaving it on for 10 minutes before removing. Pat the remaining solution onto your nose and observe your new blackhead-free skin.

TonyMoly Strawberry Nose Pack, $3.50, available at Ulta Beauty.

If “economical” is your favorite word and you’re really just here to pull shit out of your pores, these affordable, no-frills strips will get the job done — and leave your money in your bank account.

Up & Up Deep Cleaning Pore Strips, $5.89, available at Target.

Charcoal is one of the buzziest skin-care ingredients of the moment, and Bioré recently infused the stuff into its famous pore strips — making an even deeper clean easier than ever.

Bioré Deep Cleaning Charcoal Pore Strips, $5.64, available at Walmart.

We can't think of anything more "therapeutic" than smoothing one of these on and letting the purifying tea tree oil work its magic.

Earth Therapeutics Clari-T Pore Cleansing Strips, $6.99, available at Earth Therapeutics.

This 2-step product works like a dream, just prep skin with the included cotton swap before applying your mask.

Yes to Tomatoes 2-Step Nose Kit Buh-Bye Blackheads!, $3.99, available at Ulta.

Do most nose strips make your skin irritated or dry? This formula is gentle, so many find their skin soft, not itchy after.

The Face Shop Jeju Volcanic Lava Ash Nose Strips Package, $4.33, available at Amazon.

These cleansing pore strips are infused with tea tree oil and witch hazel to fight future blackheads and blemishes, too.

Botanical Choice Nose Pore Strips, $3.90, available at Forever21.

For the days you can't make it to the spa, this three-step system will make sure those blackheads don't give you nightmares anymore. Step one softens your skin, so it's easier to remove the oil buildup. Step two is your pore strip, and step three is a lotion to soothe any irritation left behind.

Naughty Nose 3-Step Blackhead Remover, $4, available at The Crème Shop.

27 First Dates That Aren't Dinner & A Movie

You meet someone, sparks fly, and you exchange phone numbers. After some witty banter via text ( OMG you love Big Mouth too??), you finally set a first date. You're excited, of course. But then they do something so egregious, so harrowing, that you're ready to pull the plug on the whole situation: They ask you out to dinner and a movie.

Is there anything more boring than a canned movie-and-dinner date? It's long, it's overly intimate, and it's such a snoozy way to get to know a person. And while it may be the way some of our parents got to know one another, our parents also didn't date online or use the word "fuckboy" in everyday conversation. Times are changing, so shouldn't first dates change, too?

Ahead, find date ideas that aren't dinner and a movie. If things go well, you can grab dinner on date two. But chances are, you'll want to go on another date from our list. Trust.

Take a long walk in the park

If you're lucky enough to live in a place with gorgeous outdoor spaces, take advantage of the scenery and invite your date for a little fresh air and exercise. Bonus: There's no set time for a walk in the park, so you can cut it short if you're not into the date or just keep strolling along if you are.

illustrated by Tristan Offit.

Meet for breakfast

The great thing about a breakfast date is that it opens up the rest of the day for you. If you two hit it off over bacon and eggs, you can keep the date going. No sparks? Your evening's still open for something else to come along...

illustrated by Tristan Offit.

Browse a bookstore

Books are the ultimate conversation starters, so you'll probably have tons to chat about. Bonus: Most shops have coffee spots, so you can discuss your finds over a brew, too.

illustrated by Tristan Offit.

Take a cooking class

Ambitious? Sure. But it's a pretty solid way to create some major bonding. Worse case-scenario, you'll walk away with a few good recipes to recreate.

illustrated by Tristan Offit.

Visit an outdoor market

Whether it's a flea market or a farmer's market, wandering from booth to booth is a fun way to get to know one another.

illustrated by Tristan Offit.

Plan a day trip

This is a great idea for someone who you know as a friend, but want to get to know in a more romantic way. Head out of town for a ski or beach trip, and enjoy some one-on-one time.

illustrated by Tristan Offit.

Go for a picnic

You can each agree to bring something specific, or meet at the grocery store and shop for a spread together.

illustrated by Tristan Offit.

Go to a poetry reading

Not someone who can muster up sweet nothings on your own? Let someone else come up with the romantic words to set the mood.

illustrated by Tristan Offit.

Take a painting class

The couple who crafts together, stays together — right?

illustrated by Tristan Offit.

Go ice skating... or apple picking...

Seasonal-specific activities are like limited-edition dates: You can only participate in them during certain times, which makes them all the more special.

illustrated by Tristan Offit.

Pop by a cat café

Both fans of felines? Get cozy with some cats while you sip some beverages. Your date gets bonus points if they wind up adopting one, of course.

illustrated by Tristan Offit.

Play some bar trivia

What better way to test if you'd make a good team?

illustrated by Tristan Offit.

Go bowling

If a casual first date is your speed, rent some bowling shoes and play a few games against each other. Plus, if you load up on bar food and beer, it is technically dinner.

illustrated by Tristan Offit.

Visit an art museum

You can live out your very own When Harry Met Sally fantasy IRL!

illustrated by Tristan Offit.

Take a city tour

If you live in a big city, chances are you've never played tourist there before. Grab your potential S.O. and jump on a double-decker bus for a fun date.

illustrated by Tristan Offit.

Take on some rock-climbing

This date allows you to get your sweat on while also participating in a serious trust test.

illustrated by Tristan Offit.

Stargaze at the planetarium

There's something super romantic about staring up at the stars. But if it's too chilly outside (or light pollution makes your view not-so-pretty), take the gazing inside.

illustrated by Tristan Offit.

Visit a food truck festival

Go around from truck to truck and rate your favorites. If the winning truck has a standalone restaurant, then you already have an idea for date two!

illustrated by Tristan Offit.

Chuckle at a comedy show

If a typical two-drink-minimum comedy club isn't your thing, look up comedy podcast tapings. They're just as fun, and you can listen to your episode later on.

illustrated by Tristan Offit.

Belt it out at karaoke

It's even more fun if you pick one another's songs.

illustrated by Tristan Offit.

Date like a kid

Whether it's arcade games or laser tag, find a spot that lets you indulge your younger self. Laughter is basically guaranteed.

illustrated by Tristan Offit.

Take a boozy tour

Whether it's at a brewery or a vineyard, it's a perfect way to spend an afternoon.

illustrated by Tristan Offit.

Check out a live music venue

Concerts can be tough for a first date, but a smaller venue makes it easier to mingle between sets.

illustrated by Tristan Offit.

Cheer on your favorite sports team

You can watch at a bar or at the stadium. Either way, you guys will bond over your shared love of sports.

illustrated by Tristan Offit.

Have a multi-venue meal

Okay, so this is technically dinner. But it's more of an adventure than a typical sit-down meal. Have your appetizer, main course, and dessert at different spots — because who doesn't want to have nachos followed by sushi followed by flan?

illustrated by Tristan Offit.

Skip dinner and just get dessert

If your date isn't willing to share an over-the-top milkshake with you, then are they really The One?

illustrated by Tristan Offit.

Stretch it out in aerial yoga

Sure, there's not much time for talking during a yoga class, but stretching your body while flying through the air in a giant hammock suspended from the ceiling will surely give you and your date something to talk about once the class is over. And if you don't end up enjoying the other person's company, at least you got a cool experience out of it.

7 Ways To Save Your Dry Scalp

Illustrated by Anna Sudit.

Of all the winter beauty woes we get hit with, dry-scalp issues are certainly the least glamorous. While it’s a bit of an awkward subject, a lot of people suffer from scalp concerns. We better start talking about it, right?

We assure you that scalp problems are nothing to be embarrassed about. There’s a slew of solutions to soothe dryness, and the tightness and flaking that tend to come with it. To prove it, we tapped Stephen D. Pullan, a trichologist at the Philip Kingsley Clinic, to give us the lowdown on exactly how to alleviate these uncomfortable issues.

Ahead, seven tips for saving your scalp — whether you’re suffering from mild itchiness or full-on flakiness. Click through to find an answer to your dandruff dilemmas, and be sure to let us know in the comments what’s worked for you.

1. Exfoliate
Just like our bodies need a good slough to remove dead skin once in a while, our scalps need that exfoliation as well — sans the scrub, though. Instead, Pullan suggests using an intensive exfoliating scalp mask once or twice a week to reduce flakiness, counteract buildup, and soothe irritation.

Kiehl's Deep Micro-Exfoliating Scalp Treatment, $20, available at Kiehl's.

Rebalancing your hair's pH is the first step in fixing a dry scalp and this apple cider vinegar scrub will do just that. Bonus: Not only does it help your scalp retain moisture and buff away dead skin cells, it also won't strip color if you just got new highlights last week.

dpHUE Apple Cider Vinegar Scalp Scrub, $38, available at Dermstore.

2. Try A Tonic
To keep redness and flakes at bay, apply a leave-in tonic post-shampoo. “After cleansing the scalp thoroughly, it can help to apply a toner directly to areas of the scalp that you’d like to target most,” says Pullan. “A tonic permeates deeply, which offers long-lasting relief.” Opt for calming ingredients, such as glycerin and aloe.

Philip Kingsley Flaky Itch Scalp Toner, $36, available at Philip Kingsley.

3. Use A Therapeutic Shampoo
Whether your scalp issues are mild or severe, it’s always best to steer clear of shampoos with harsh irritants and fragrances. Pullan recommends a therapeutic shampoo with coal tar. (Neutrogena's is the gold standard.) While it may sound like a scary ingredient, the FDA has deemed under-5% concentrations in OTC products safe for use. “Tar is something we add when treating excessively itchy or flaky scalps,” says Pullan. Other ingredients common in scalp-soothing shampoos include zinc, salicylic acid, and tea-tree oil.

Neutrogena T-Gel Therapeutic Shampoo, $7.49, available at Walgreens.

4. Start From The Inside
Pullan stresses the importance of treating scalp problems through hydrating and eating nutrient-rich foods, in addition to topical treatments. “When we’re evaluating patients, we always tell them to drink tons of water and eat foods such as avocado, salmon, nuts, and anything containing essential omega-3 oils,” he says. That's all good and fine — but for the girl on the go, there are always capsules.

Be Well Omega-3 Fish Oils, $46, available at Be Well.

If you can't be bothered with shipping and handling, there are fish oil supplements you can find right at your local Sephora.

Hum Nutrition OMG! Omega The Great Supplements, $30, available at Sephora.

5. Oil Up
Applying skin-loving oils directly to the scalp can be extremely beneficial in combating dryness and soothing irritation. Coconut and jojoba oils both contain anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal properties, while olive oil expertly conditions with squalene, a naturally derived lipid used to protect and lubricate the skin.

Desert Essence 100% Pure Jojoba Oil, $9.99, available at Walgreens.

Photo: Via Desert Essence.

6. Apply Conditioner Strategically
Go ahead, apply your favorite conditioner liberally from the mid-lengths to the ends of your strands, but resist the urge to massage it into your scalp — it will only do harm, Pullan tells us. “Conditioner is meant to moisturize hair, not skin,” he says. “It will clog the pores in your scalp and cause further issues with buildup.”

Carol's Daughter Monoi Repairing Conditioner, $22, available at Carol's Daughter.

Photo: Via Carol's Daughter.

7. See A Doctor If You Need To

If you’ve tried it all and your scalp issues persist or worsen, it may be time to see a dermatologist about getting a steroid or cortisone treatment — or even an antibiotic. What’s not normal? Bleeding, excessive buildup, and scabbing. Make the appointment sooner rather than later to assuage this painful problem.

Celebrities Call Out The Paparazzi For Upskirting At The Brit Awards

$

0

Mere hours after female celebrities walked down Wednesday's Brit Awards red carpet with white roses in support of Time's Up, paparazzi were ready and waiting to take upskirt photos of them.

There's nothing new about sleazy photographers lurking around celebrities to snap photos to sell to tabloids and gossip sites for megabucks, but in the aftermath of #MeToo, the pervasive sexism that makes the practice permissible was even more glaringly obvious.

ITV's This Morning presenter Holly Willoughby, who proudly held a white rose at the Brits, has shared her fury after photos emerged of her (and other women who went to the Brits) attempting to get out of cars on the night, claiming it shows that "time's up on Time's Up".

"At the beginning of the night we held white roses and walked down a red carpet full of the hope and pride that comes with the #timesup campaign," Willoughby wrote on Instagram. "At the end of the night, cameras were held low to get a photo up our skirts... time's apparently up on #timesup."

Many people are clearly in agreement, with the post having racked up more than 220k likes since it was posted 16 hours ago. "Disgusting. Treated like pieces of meat. I bet it sells though," one woman wrote.

"The gutter press will always be the gutter press," said another. "Name and shame the papers that publish these pictures. Make them see that they are part of the problem."

Another wrote: "Old habits die hard! They (the photographers) are there for one reason, to make money, the most shocking photos will reap the most rewards, until the media as a whole stop rewarding it they will continue to seek it. Such a shame. Funny how they prey on women more than men."

Willoughby has brought the issue of upskirting back into the public consciousness, with many people on social media saying they now believe upskirt photos should be made illegal and that the paps in question "should be arrested".

"This makes me furious! The sooner ‘upskirting’ becomes illegal, the better. It’s an utter violation," wrote one woman on Instagram in response to Willoughby's post.

Campaigner Gina Martin has been lobbying to change the law on upskirt photos in the UK since a man took an upskirt photo of her at a gig in London's Hyde Park last year. She went straight to the police but was told there was nothing they could do as there is no specific law against upskirting in the UK, unlike Scotland where it has been an offence since 2010.

Martin is now campaigning for it to be made a sexual offence under the 2003 Sexual Offences Act. The government says culprits can be dealt with via other legal means, but a recent investigation found that only 11 people have been charged for the practice since 2015.

You can sign the Care2 petition calling for upskirt photos to be made illegal under the Sexual Offences Act of 2003 here.

If you have experienced sexual harassment or violence of any kind, please visit Rape Crisis or call 0808 802 9999.

5 Of The Biggest Street Style Trends To Try Now

More than ever before, the power wielded by influencers and bloggers means that the style tricks played out on the streets of fashion month are as influential as the collections designers present each season. Once a piece has the seal of approval from Copenhagen's coolest or New York's savviest dressers, it can exponentially increase brand sales and ripple down to mass retail, shaping the items we'll ultimately be wearing year-round.

New York and London fashion weeks may be over, but with Milan in full swing and Paris to come, there's still plenty of inspiration to be found. Global fashion search platform Lyst has been accumulating data which reveals the most sought-after street style pieces seen during the fall/winter 2018 season thus far. From classic transitional trenches to the sunglasses shape that'll see you through summer, click on to get your hands on five of fashion's most in-demand items.

Le Specs Sunglasses

Love (and searches, which are up 21%) for Le Specs sunglasses shows no sign of waning, in large part thanks to the likes of Rihanna and Bella Hadid wearing them everywhere from sunny LA to paparazzi-ridden airport arrivals. From the brand's cult collaboration with Adam Selman — which kickstarted the demand for teeny tiny '90s shades — to its Kurt Cobain-esque oval style, it seems that you aren't on vacation unless you're donning Le Specs... er... specs.

Burberry Trench Coats

With Christopher Bailey's final show after 17 years at Burberry drawing so much fanfare this season, it comes as no surprise that the brand's signature trench coat was seen everywhere. Searches are up 36% globally, indicating that fashion fans far and wide want a slice of the British stalwart's aesthetic.

Off-White x Jimmy Choo Shoes

Off-White's Virgil Abloh 's collaboration with footwear brand Jimmy Choo has been a smash hit. With searches up 40% in New York, Bella Hadid is the poster girl for the pieces, teaming the transparent sky-high heels with her signature sportswear aesthetic.

Logo Scarves

An extension of the athleisure trend that just keeps evolving, fashion took on logo scarves this season. Searches are up globally 13%, from Henry Holland's swear-y personalized scarves, which many wore to his fall/winter '18 show, to Alexander McQueen's 'Fear Nothing' piece.

Staud Handbags

Searches for cult bag brand Staud — brainchild of former Reformation designer Sarah Staudinger — are up 24% thanks to its revival of the It bag in sleek, contemporary shapes with off-kilter touches. A transparent tote with a tan croc mini bag inside? Sure. A bucket bag tucked into a netted exterior? Absolutely.

10 Bachelorette Weekend Ideas That Aren't Cheesy

$

0

Bachelorette weekends can be a lot of fun — when they're done right. Whether you're the bride or the maid of honor, if you're in charge of planning, it’s your responsibility to remember that your squad is chipping in time and money. So your bash should be somewhere that feels suitable for the whole team.

And while you could head to typical spots like Las Vegas or Miami, why not go for something a little more unexpected? Ahead, we've got 10 ideas for destination bachelorette parties that you probably haven't considered — but should.

Solvang, CA
In the mountains east of the Santa Barbara coastline, there is a small town called Solvang, a Danish-replica village complete with windmills. The town, which feels straight out of Disneyland’s “Small World” ride, is in the heart of wine country, so you can check out the nearby wineries while enjoying the homespun kitsch.

Solvang is remote and unique enough to feel like a distant getaway, but in reality it’s only a two-hour drive from L.A., and there are plenty of modern amenities to enjoy. Book a few rooms at chic boutique hotel The Landsby, which has an excellent local wine list in its lobby bar. And if you decide to up the ante on relaxation, head to Spa Élan in nearby Los Olivos before your tour of the wineries.

Photo: Getty Images.

Niagara Falls, NY
You can head to Niagara Falls for the actual falls, but that’s only a quick boat trip, and will give you plenty of time to plan a series of fun activities to keep the group busy over the weekend. The Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino offers gambling, bars, and the possibility of an endless buffet, while the Niagara Wine Trail boasts a series of small wineries.

Most of the local hotels are big chains (except for the ornate boutique property The Giacomo), so consider renting a house on Airbnb for your crew. Need something more low-key to do during your stay? Niagara Falls also has a massive outlet mall.

Photo: Getty Images.

Mexico City
Sure, you could head for one of Mexico’s many beach resorts, where the bottom-shelf liquor will be flowing freely. But you’re cooler than that, which is why you’re taking your squad to Mexico City, the cultural and culinary hub of Mexico, where the margaritas are far more legit than at Señor Frogs in Cancún.

Hotels are inexpensive, so you can shack up in a lux one like the W Mexico City or seek out a funky boutique property like Hotel Habita. When you’re ready to party, the city has a ton of cool cocktail bars worth checking out, like speakeasy Jules Basement and the literary-inspired Salinger.

Photo: Getty Images.

Louisville, KY
Do you like bourbon? Do your friends like bourbon? (If not, you might need some new friends.) If so, Louisville is the exact right destination for your bachelorette festivities. Before you hit the distilleries and bars, though, book a block of seats at the city’s AAA baseball stadium to catch a game and pay a visit to Churchill Downs, the home of the Kentucky Derby, where you might be able to watch a race.

Score some rooms at the chic, artsy 21c Museum Hotel Louisville, which has its own art collection, and plan a celebratory dinner at the Mayan Café or Jack Fry’s. Now for the bourbon: Start at Haymarket Whiskey Bar, move on to Bourbons Bistro, and end your night at Proof On Main (which is, luckily, adjacent to your hotel).

Marfa, TX
The population of Marfa is less than 2,000, so consider this a destination for bridal parties who want to try something more relaxed. The town, a three-hour drive from El Paso, is best known for its art galleries and installations, which include the must-visit Chinati Foundation and iconic Prada Marfa (a 37-mile drive outside of downtown). The town itself is low-key, centered in the middle of the desert, and the amenities are simple.

Pick a historic hotel like the Hotel Paisano or a newer contemporary property like Hotel Saint George as your home base. In the evening, check out the Capri, which has outdoor fire pits, or relaxed bar Planet Marfa. Let’s be honest, though, you’re really here for that priceless photo in front of the middle-of-the-desert Prada store.

Bozeman, MT
If your crew is looking for an outdoor adventure, Bozeman, MT, is a good choice — especially during the warmer months. The city, nearby to Yellowstone National Park, can be a base for all kinds of activities, like whitewater rafting, hiking, horseback riding, and mountain biking.

You can elect to camp or book a room in town (try hip hotel The Lark). Even though Bozeman may look like a quaint mountain city, its nightlife also packs a punch. Stop by the Bozeman Spirits Distillery for a tasting, and check out the craft beers at the White Dog Brewing Company. End your night at the Zebra Cocktail Lounge, a late-night bar with plenty of dancing (and a weekly ladies' night).

Dublin, Ireland
If anyone knows how to celebrate, it’s the Irish. Dublin requires some commitment in terms of planning, but once you get there, you and your posse can head straight to the nearest pub and start downing Guinness. There are tons of hotels to pick from (look into centrally located boutique hotel The Brooks), but an Airbnb might be your best option for housing everyone inexpensively in the middle of the city.

While you’re obviously there to party, make sure to take some time to visit St. Patrick’s Cathedral and the National Museum of Ireland. Once you have your culture fix, head to the Guinness Storehouse for drinks at the rooftop bar, and then grab some pints at The Brazen Head, Ireland’s oldest pub, which features live music nightly.

Havana, Cuba
Cuba has recently become a possible destination for Americans, with several airlines now offering direct flights to Havana. If you’re interested in experiencing and exploring a new culture over your bachelorette weekend, Havana is a great foreign option that is reasonably priced. There are some decent hotel choices in the city, but you’ll be better off booking an Airbnb property that can house your entire group.

You can opt for beach hangs or strolling through the city’s various neighborhoods during the day, and dance the night away at hot spot La Casa de la Música, known for its salsa and merengue. And, of course, you’ll need to sidle up to the bar at El Floridita for the infamous daiquiris. It’s an unconventional choice for a bachelorette party, but it’s also one that your friends will be trying to outdo for years to come.

Photo: Getty Images.

Martha's Vineyard, MA
Cape Cod is a classic weekend destination, and if you’re looking to create a bachelorette weekend that rivals Taylor Swift’s Fourth of July parties, then Martha's Vineyard is the perfect pick. Rent a house near the beach (don’t worry that Jaws was filmed there) and stock up on things to grill and drink.

This is not a destination where you’re going to need to do much: Just hang out in the sun, pour rosé, and play party games. If you want to go out, grab a meal at The Red Cat Kitchen or Offshore Ale House, which offers one of the best lobster rolls on the island. It’s not mandatory that your crew all don matching Vineyard Vines shirts, but it will look good on Instagram.

Photo: Getty Images.

Memphis, TN
Sure, you could head to Nashville to get your fill of Southern music and soul food, but been there, done that. Instead, opt for the buzzing metropolis of Memphis, where you can imbibe, check out amazing live music, and dance the night away. There’s a massive array of cool bars in town, but try cocktail joint Alchemy or the historic Mollie Fontaine Lounge, which is set in an old mansion.

If live music is your jam, try the raucous Wild Bill’s or Hi Tone. Alternatively, if you want to get the vibe of the city but feel like getting away from it all for the weekend, book a room (err, shack) at the Shack Up Inn in the nearby town of Clarksdale. The historic property, with its rock-‘n’-roll vibe, is the perfect place to treat yourselves to some rustic R&R — and a lot of beer.

Leaving your house in the dead of winter can feel like an herculean task, especially when the weather is gloomy and there's black ice on the ground. But getting out of town sounds like the perfect antidote for our mounting seasonal affective disorder: We want a vacation, and we want it now.

While we would normally recommend a beach break as a nice way to deal with the weather, there's something to be said about destinations that pull off the winter wonderland look spectacularly. We're talking about places that offer impressive holiday decorations, lively Christmas markets, and readily available fireplaces. If a city looks quaint enough to be featured in a holiday card, we can (maybe) overlook the frostbites.

From a quaint ski town to a snowy wonderland, we've rounded up five postcard-perfect trips you should take while there's still snow on the ground. And, just so you'll know what to do should you decide to make an impulsive visit, we've also included the coziest hotels in the area, plus the insider intel you need to know.

Paris, France

Paris is always a good idea, but the city comes to life during the wintertime in a truly spectacular fashion. The French capital channels its chicness into a stunning display of lights: Many of its iconic monuments, shopfronts, and streets — including the Avenue des Champs Elysées — are all adorned in full-on festive illuminations. The holiday decorations at Galeries Lafayette are a sight to behold: The legacy department store suspends a different multi-storey Christmas tree from its magnificent Art Nouveau glass ceiling each year.

Even though the wildly popular Champs Elysées Christmas market is not happening this year, you'll be equally satisfied with a walk through the little shops in Montmarte, a romantic neighborhood with a cozy, village-y vibe. And, you can't possibly visit the most fashionable city in the world without stocking up on your winter wardrobe: Kiliwatch and Vintage Désir are two of our favorites to hunt for vintage treasures.

Where To Stay: Within walking distance from Champs Elysées, Arc de Trimophe, and Faubourg Saint-Honoré, Amastan Hotel feels more like an intimate pied-à-terre than a boutique hotel. Design touches such as industrial-style lighting fixtures, custom-made rattan chairs, and navy herringbone wooden walls give the rooms a lush yet understated look. The ground-floor bar, Anouk, is another Instagram haven in and of itself, outfitted with designer lighting, a glass roof, and leafy plants. The small garden offers a peaceful respite from the city. With these cozy amenities, you might never actually want to leave.

Paris, France (Continued)

Insider Tip: Forget Versailles: Skip the long lines and head to Chateau Vaux-le-Vicomte, a stunning, privately-owned property an hour outside of Paris. Its Baroque ceilings, stately chandeliers, and rich tapestries are said to have inspired the interior design of the Palace of Versailles. The castle is putting on an incredible spectacle for Christmas, with more than two dozen of its rooms filled with thousands of themed holiday installations, including trees made out of confectionery and an indoor enchanted forest.

Park City, Utah

There's way to more Park City than the Sundance Film Festival. For one, it's a great destination for skiing, thanks to the crisp mountain air and powdery peaks. The ski town's Main Street has an old-world charm, thanks to the well-maintained 19th-century facades.

The Deer Valley region should be on any foodie's radar due to its emerging culinary scene: High West Distillery & Saloon offers a unique pairing menu for its blended whiskies, while The Deer Valley Grocery Cafe will give your the best comfort food fix after a day of hitting the slopes.

Park City, Utah (Continued)

Where To Stay: Silver King Hotel combines sweeping mountain views with the rustic decor of a traditional ski lodge. It's just a short walk from the PayDay ski lift, but still close enough to the Main Street. After admiring the snow-capped surrounds, guests can warm up in front of a wood-burning fireplace, which can be found in every room.

Insider Tip: If you're feeling sore from a day of skiing, Spa Montage at Deer Valley offers offers massage treatments customized according to your body's pains and needs. Unwinding in the hot tub overlooking the mountains sounds like the ultimate way to unwind.

Edinburgh, Scotland

There's no better season than the winter to retrace J.K. Rowling's footsteps in Edinburgh, the place where she wrote the majority of the Harry Potter series. The city looks extra magical when covered in snow, like a Hogsmeade came to life. Grab a drink at The Balmoral, the grand dame hotel where Rowling finished the last chapters of the final book. After than, have a wander on Victoria Street and peruse wizardry merchandise at Diagon House, a shop dedicated to the franchise. AHA HA HA Jokes & Novelties, a prank shop with a look that rivals Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes, is just a few doors down.

Even if you're not a fan of Harry Potter, Edinburgh is still well-worth a visit: Time your trip around the end of the year to catch Hogmanay, an outdoor festival of fireworks and concerts that ends with a dip in the freezing River Forth on New Year's Day.

Edinburgh, Scotland (Continued)

Where To Stay: The recently-opened Principal Hotel on Charlotte Square, which overlooks the landmark National Archives building, is designed with a muse in mind: Hamish — a fictional character conjured up by the owners of the hotel — is a well-heeled Scottish gentleman with a love for books and travel. The rooms has a much more modern look in contrast, punctuated by a gallery wall above the beds and Scottish tartan wool blankets. The well-lit atrium of the hotel, with towering houseplants and a greenhouse-like ceiling, is one of the most stylish places in Edinburgh to eat breakfast.

Edinburgh, Scotland (Continued)

Insider Tip: If you can brace the cold winds, the one-hour hike up Arthur's Seat is truly worth it. There's no better place to take in the skyline of the whole city, and it's a great place to go sledding when covered in snow.

Photo: Getty Images.

Nagano, Japan

Nagano is home to some of the most gorgeous landscapes in Japan. There's vibrant foliage in the autumn, cherry blossoms in the spring, but what you see in the winter is extra special: There are snow monkeys warming up alongside you in the outdoor hot springs, for one, and frosted expanse for skiing, sledding, and snowboarding. Our pick would be Nozawa Onsen Ski Resort in northern Nagano, where there are all-natural, powdery snow and over 13 free natural spring baths open to the public.

For an additional dose of culture, stick around for the Nozawa Onsen Dosojin Festival on January 15, the folk celebration to fete happy marriages and first-born children through a massive bonfire watched by a huge crowd.

Nagano, Japan (Continued)

Where To Stay: You'd be remiss if you didn't experience a ryokan, a traditional Japanese guesthouse with tatamis(woven straw flooring) as beds. Oshi Ryokan is a traditional inn managed by a family and is within walking distance to three historic shrines in the area, including the famous Togakushi Shrine.

Nagano, Japan (Continued)

Insider Tip: If you leave Japan without having ramen at least once, did you ever actually go? Ramen Zunpachi stands out from the other ramen joints in town, thanks to its silky pork bone and soy sauce broth — a family recipe passed down for generations.

Prague, Czech Republic

The winters in Prague can be quite brutal, but since the rainy season is over by then, the snow actually enhances the storybook vibe of the city. The annual outdoor Christmas market, which takes place in the Old Town Square, is a stunning place to shop festive crafts and people watch — while imbibing a cup of mulled wine, of course. To warm yourself up after spending all that time outdoors, the city boasts a vast collection of highly-Instagrammable historic cafes, the most impressive being The Municipal House Cafe and Cafe Salvia.

Prague, Czech Republic (Continued)

Where To Stay: Got a soft spot for retro design? Vintage Design Hotel Sax will catch your eye with its candy-colored furniture and playful approach. Designed by a team of local architects, the rooms are covered in wall stylings with funky, psychedelic prints. The hotel is also a stone's throw away from famous sights such as the Prague Castle and Charles Bridge.

Prague, Czech Republic (Continued)

Insider Tip: While Christmas is a special time to visit Prague, the city also puts on an amazing show to celebrate the end of winter: Party with the locals at the Carnevale Praha at the end of January, a street parade where crazy and creative costumes are mandatory.

The Shoe Trend That's Giving Us Spring Fever

Ah, spring. The time of year where we can unbind our toes from a deep hibernation in thick winter boots and double-layered cotton socks. It's been so long that we've forgotten the simplicities of the warmth of the sun hitting our fresh pedicures, and the refreshing feel of a breeze passing by our ankles. Spring is the season for new life, and we think that applies to our feet too. While some may read this as an intro towards admitting a foot fetish, others who know the joy of pulling your flip-flops and sandals out of storage will understand.

But this spring, we're not wearing any old open-toed shoes. Suede sandals, mules, kitten heels, pool slides, flatforms, and "grandma" heels have been popping up just about everywhere, and in a fun kaleidoscope of colors, too. Basically, there's not one silhouette you won't find in swanky suede. It's time to let your feet rejoin the world of the living with a bit more breathing room and a bit more color.

Welcome toMoney Diaries , where we're tackling what might be the last taboo facing modern working women: money. We're asking millennials how they spend their hard-earned money during a seven-day period — and we're tracking every last dollar.

Today: an IT analyst working in pharmaceuticals who makes $65,000 per year. This week, she spends some of her paycheck on an asiago bagel with veggie cream cheese.

Occupation: IT Analyst
Industry: Pharmaceuticals
Age: 22
Location: Somerville, MA
Salary: $65,000
Paycheck (2x/month): $1,506 post deductions and taxes

Monthly Expenses
Rent: $900 for one room in a three-bedroom house
Student Loan Payments: $0. (I received a full academic scholarship for my undergrad and worked to pay for living costs.)
Car Insurance: $117
Gym Membership: $29.99
Gas & Electricity: ~$60-80
Savings: $840
401(k) Contribution: $600 pre-tax. (My employer also contributes 5% of my salary.)
Health, Dental & Vision Insurance: $65.34, deducted pre-tax

Day One

7:30 a.m. — I get out of bed and wash my face and dry shampoo my hair until I look presentable for work. Quickly cut potatoes and carrots to throw in the crockpot with a roast so I'll have dinner and food for this weekend.

10 a.m. — I've been working out of the office for the past few days, so my morning is spent powering through calls and emails and playing a bit of catch up. I eat my packed breakfast of plain Greek yogurt, blueberries, strawberries, and granola.

12 p.m. — I brought lunch from home today, but the cafeteria has Indian food catered and it smells SO good. I can't resist and end up buying an order of chicken tikka masala. $8.63

2 p.m. — I recently transitioned to a new team at work and none of them come in the office on Fridays, so I leave after a productive morning in the office to finish my day at home. On the way, I stop to get gas ($25.11) and a car wash ($11). $36.11

7 p.m. — After hitting the gym for a much-needed sweat, I eat some of the roast I had been cooking in the crockpot all day, telling myself to prep meals like this more often. It's so nice to come home to supper already cooked and it makes the house smell delicious. While eating, I visit with one of my roomies and her BF who is visiting for the weekend.

10 p.m. — I recently found out that my boyfriend of two years had been cheating on me. Seeing my roommate all happy and in love with her new BF has me feeling a little (okay, a lot) down in the dumps about my current situation. I go to my room and call my parents and finally tell them what happened between me and my now ex. It took a while for me to tell them, which may seem weird, but when it first happened, I was in so much shock and denial about it all. It's an emotionally draining conversation and it feels like I've ripped the Band-Aid off all over again, but I'm relieved my parents know now. They are my support system and I needed to lean on them. After pouring my heart out, my parents invite me on a weekend trip to the Caribbean they have planned and won't take no for an answer. My dad tells me to pick flights and he will the cover the cost ($503.67). Seriously, they are the best parents.

11:59 — After what feels like the world's longest day, I wish I could say I did yoga or meditated before bed. Instead, I ate a giant stack of Double Stuf Oreos, cried a bit, and watched Netflix until I fall asleep. Self-care comes in all different forms, right?

Daily Total: $44.74

Day Two

7 a.m. — Awake despite desperately wanting to sleep in. I am a dog walker on the Wag! app, so I schedule a walk for 8 a.m. Dog walking gives me my puppy fix and extra cash I don't have to budget for!

9 a.m. — I finish the dog walk and head to the gym for weights and cardio. I'm channeling last night's emotions into today's workout and leave high on endorphins. I come home and down an iced coffee, a banana, and two hard-boiled eggs while deciding what to do with my day.

1:15 p.m. — My alma mater is in the Big Ten Conference and I see there is a Big Ten bar crawl around Fenway today. I text one of my friends in the area and we decide to go together. I grab a Lyft to meet her ($11.57). On the way, I go on my Amazon phone app and order a cozy giant blanket for my college roomie who lives in a different state now. She has been on the receiving end of so many late night emotional calls and texts from me this past month and I want her to know how much I love and appreciate her for that. I use points to cover some of it and only pay $13.57. $25.14

8 p.m. — The bar crawl is ending. My friend and I met some fun girls on the crawl and exchange numbers with them, promising to grab drinks soon. I carried cash to keep my spending on drinks and food to a limit instead of mindlessly putting everything on my card, but I still lost track of what I've had to drink so far. My friend and I Uber back to my neighborhood to meet my roomies and go out. She pays and I promise to buy a round at the next bar. $60

2:30 a.m. — Finally make it back home after spending the rest of the night at a local bar with live music. I spent the night dancing alone and actually loved it. I paid the cover and bought a round of drinks and a basket of fries for my friend and me. $30

Daily Total: $115.14

Day Three

9 a.m. — I'm up and surprisingly feeling great. I deep clean the apartment before I can change my mind and crawl back into bed.

10:30 a.m. — Ex texts me that he wants to meet for coffee. Despite the shit he did, I still love him, and as much as I wish I could control my feelings with a magical switch that turns on and off, I can't.

12 p.m. — Go to a bagel shop with my roomies for the first meal of the day and I'm starving. I get an asiago bagel with veggie cream cheese. All the dairy is going to make me bloat, but I need it. $4.57

2:30 p.m. — After weighing the pros and cons, I decide to meet my ex for coffee. I order jasmine tea and we chat for an hour about life. It's nice, but he hits me with an "I still love you but I don't know if I'm in love with you." Hearing that someone you care about so much doesn't feel the same way you do is one of the worst feelings ever. I call my mom and sister. I wish more than anything that I could drive home and curl up on the couch with them, but since I'm several states away, a phone call with have to suffice. $2.75

10 p.m. — I realize that the only thing I've eaten today is that bagel so I heat up leftover roast and throw on Netflix.

Daily Total: $7.32

Day Four

5 a.m. — I'm up an hour before my gym alarm because I'm restless. I decide to get up and get there extra early, knowing I'll feel better after a solid sweat.

8:30 a.m. — Arrive at work and settle into my desk for morning meetings with a giant water and peanut butter banana protein shake.

12 p.m. — I have no appetite so I make green tea to sip on while browsing the internet during my lunch break. My roomies and I are planning a Galentine's Day party so I search Pinterest for decoration inspiration.

1 p.m. — Still no appetite but I know I need to put something in my stomach. I mosey to the cafeteria and buy buffalo popcorn chicken to munch on. $3.62

6 p.m. — Warm up the last of the leftover roast for dinner and wait for my roomies to come home. I have been sequestered away at my desk all day and feel like I've barely spoken to another human, so I'm excited for them to get home.

8 p.m. — My roomies and I catch up on our days and I feel so grateful for them, especially this last month. They have been so supportive of me through the breakup with my ex. I am hungry and feeling a little under the weather so I make a PB & J, chug a glass of Emergen-C, and go to bed early.

Daily Total: $3.62

Day Five

5:15 a.m. — My alarm is set for 7:30 but my internal clock wakes me up. I consider going to the gym but I know sleep would be best to fight this head cold so force myself back to bed.

7:15 a.m. — Up for real this time. I check my sleep-tracking app and see that I slept nine and a half hours last night. Go me! I shower, drink a cup of coffee, and pack Greek yogurt with blueberries and strawberries to eat at my desk later for breakfast. I also pack clothes to work out in after work. One of the main reasons I chose to live in Massachusetts was to be near my (now ex) BF, and not having him as part of my daily routine anymore is so effing hard. Working out helps to keep my mind off of things, so I don't usually miss a day.

11:20 a.m. — Literally can't wait to eat so I warm up the lunch I brought from home — tilapia and broccoli — and eat at my desk (so that no one can see me eating lunch so early!).

1 p.m. — Meet a coworker for a break at the coffee bar in our office. She gets a grande black coffee and I get a hot tea to soothe my throat. I buy both. $3

4 p.m. — Snack on a Honeycrisp apple while working on my budget spreadsheet. I usually check my budget one or two times a week. When I first started working, I saved almost no money, so in November I created a budget for myself and made a goal to put $10,000 in savings by the end of 2018! It keeps me motivated to not spend as much.

7 p.m. — Home after the gym. I preheat the oven to make more tilapia and broccoli for dinner. While my tilapia bakes, I put chicken in the fridge to defrost for dinner tomorrow and prep overnight oats for tomorrow's breakfast. I've never made them before but I throw in oats, almond milk, a little maple syrup, nutmeg, and strawberries and hope for the best!

Daily Total: $3

Day Six

6:50 a.m. — Sleep in again since I am determined to beat this head cold. Since I'm usually up at 5:30 a.m. for the gym most mornings, sleeping in for the past two days has felt luxurious. I roll out of bed and make coffee and then shower and get ready for the day.

8:30 a.m. — At my desk I eat the overnight oats, which are surprisingly good. I've got a knot in my stomach, though, because my ex and I work in the same building. He's been traveling most of the month but I know he gets back today so there's a possibility of running into him. We haven't spoken since our coffee and I am hoping to avoid him. Breaking up with someone you love and care for is one thing but then adding in the possibility of running into them every day is a whole new level of emotional torture. I take a deep breath (realize my head cold is better, yay!) and remind myself that there are problems in the world so much larger than mine and that I will be fine.

11 a.m. — I've spent all morning creating flow charts so I take a quick break to eat a banana, fill up my water bottle, and stretch my legs.

12:30 p.m. — Eat lunch with my coworkers. I have leftover tilapia and broccoli. Inevitably, I see my ex. Try not to make eye contact but feel my face flush bright red. Ughhh.

4 p.m. — I have a phone interview with my alma mater. They are writing a story on me and I don't feel like I did enough in college for this honor but I'm flattered nonetheless. After, I head home and chat with my roomie and her BF. I snack on a rice cake and strawberries before going to the gym.

7 p.m. — After the gym, I call my dad and he gives me a quick pep talk. He can make me feel better no matter what. I swing by Trader Joe's on my way home and pick up a few things to make curry for supper. I grab riced cauliflower, bell peppers, butternut squash soup, and red curry sauce. I can't keep away from the snacks so I also grab Joe-Joe's cookies, peanut butter-filled pretzels, and granola bars. $17.81

9 p.m. — The curry ends up being delicious. I eat two bowls while hanging out with my roomies and watching the Celtics game.

Daily Total: $17.81

Day Seven

5:20 a.m. — I get dressed for the gym. I check my sleep-tracking app and see I only got about five hours of sleep, so I make coffee before leaving.

7:30 a.m. — I'm at work super early so I treat myself to a second coffee to go with the peanut butter protein shake I brought from home. The coffee bar at my work is subsidized so I don't feel bad buying a venti cold brew for less than $2. $1.93

10 a.m. — I'm powering through a bunch of documentation for a new project I'm on and realize my stomach is grumbling. I have no snacks at my desk and it would be embarrassing to heat up my lunch this early so I go to the cafeteria and get a sausage, egg, and cheese breakfast sandwich on a bagel. $2.50

12 p.m. — I eat lunch with coworkers again and also buy a warm chocolate chip cookie because I have no willpower against warm, chocolatey goodness. $2

7 p.m. — I meet my roomie and one of our friends for beers after work. I get two Gruits plus buffalo popcorn chicken and fried calamari for the table to share. $42

Daily Total: $48.43

These Are The Best Places To Buy Plants Online

In case you haven't noticed, we're a bit obsessed with house-plants here at Refinery29. To us, adding a touch of nature is one of the easiest ways to brighten up a room. We're firm believers that a bit of leafy shrub will help trick the eye into thinking that a space is much bigger than it actually is. Plus, green is such a soothing color.

You don't necessarily have to hit up your nearest florist or plant nursery to curate a rad indoor forest: In our never ending quest to develop a green thumb, a few excellent online plant shops have landed on our radar. Click ahead for seven stylish emporiums that will deliver the trendiest greenery to your doorstep. Now it's up to you to figure out how to keep them alive.

Lula's Garden
Turn to Lula's for simple, stylish, and eco-friendly succulent garden box online shopping. The plants range in price from $25 to $85, come complete with individual care kits, and nationwide shipping with same-day delivery in L.A. to boot.

We just can't get enough of The Sill's trendy aesthetic. The startup's highly Instagrammable brick-and-mortar store on the Lower East Side offers an Instagram-worthy curation of succulents, ferns, and aloe vera, and the website is equally packed with leafy goodness. We've been eyeing this London-based indoor plant brand's collection of chic perennials — ranging from asparagus ferns to rare "Swiss cheese plants " — for some time now. New York Fashion Week Runways Were The Most Racially Diverse Yet

After New York Fashion Week ended last September, it looked like the industry was finally beginning to show signs of changing for the better. In its annual diversity report, The Fashion Spot found the 94 shows from the spring/summer 2018 season to more representative across different races, sizes, ages, and genders than ever before. When the report was published, The Washington Post fashion critic Robin Givhan told the website the progress was “undeniable,” but she was more interested how the major design houses would proceed. So how did the fall 2018 runways stack up?

On Thursday, The Fashion Spot released its latest findings for February's New York Fashion Week. First, the good news: The percentage of models of color was up 37.3% from 36.9% last season. Of the 19 models who walked the most shows, eight were people of color: Shanelle Nyasiase appeared in 13 shows, Nandy Nicodeme walked in 11, and Hyun Ji Shin, Jing Wen, Manuela Sanchez, Mona Matsuoka, Naomi Chin Wing, and Yue Han each made 10 appearances.

Gypsy Sport, Chromat, Matthew Adams Dolan, Jeremy Scott, Brandon Maxwell, Alexander Wang, and Vivienne Tam were the most ethnically diverse runways, all featuring over 62.5% models of color. Unfortunately, that’s where the progress stops.

Plus-size model appearances slipped from 34 appearances on nine runways to 26 appearances on eight runways. In September, Torrid skewed the results with its first New York Fashion Week show, as did Addition Elle. According to TFS, plus-size models accounted for 1.1% of all castings. As usual Christian Siriano and Chromat led the charge for body diversity and inclusivity.

The number of models over age 50 also fell from 10 to 9 this season. TFS attributes the dip to Tome, J.Crew, and Tracy Reese — which each typically champion models of all ages — not showing.

The Row and A Détacher finally expanded their model castings to include nonwhite models, but designers Vivienne Hu, Jill Stuart, Zang Toi, and Katie Gallagher had the least diverse runways of the season, with less than four models of color cast for their shows.

There were, however, a record amount of transgender women and non-binary models this season — 33 to be specific (beating spring 2018’s castings by two). Model Teddy Quinlivan walked in 11 shows.

Progress is a slow process, but we shouldn’t continue to rely on the same designers to shoulder the burden of showing the industry what makes a truly diverse runway. It's time the industry as a whole stepped up and made a stronger commitment to more inclusive castings that better reflect what women — its consumer — actually look like.

This Real Housewives Star Has Secretly Been A Hair-Dye Model — For 20 Years

As any of the millions of viewers of the Real Housewives franchise who've watched her juggle her many side hustles like a pro are already aware, Kandi Burruss is a real Renaissance woman — a kind of modern-day female Leonardo da Vinci, if you will, except with a sex-toy empire and songwriting credits rather than the Mona Lisa and flying machines. But there's one entry in Burruss' lengthy resume that even the most dedicated Housewives scholars may have missed: a brief stint as a hair-dye model, more than twenty years ago.

For her #TBT submission on Instagram yesterday, the star, who recently made her Broadway debut as Matron "Mama" Morton in Chicago, shared a hilarious relic of the past that's somehow still around in present day. "Somebody tagged me & said they saw this hair color box in the store recently," she captioned the photo, which shows a row of hair-dye boxes that have definitely seen better days — and, on one of them, a bouffant-wearing baby Kandi. "@tamera_wynn & I took these pics when we were 18yrs old... please tell me why #OptimumCare is still using 20yr old pictures on their boxes??? Y’all haven’t changed colors or packaging yet? #TBT"

The dated packaging probably isn't the most encouraging sign for anyone in the market for a good boxed hair dye, but one commenter had a satisfying answer to Kandi's question as to why those vintage boxes are still hanging around in drugstore shelves: "Because you make it sell still." When you put it that way, it almost sounds as if 20 years of Kandi Burruss has been the secret to the brand's success...

Victoria Beckham Doesn’t Wash Her Jeans, Either

For people who are super-serious about their denim, there is no one hard and fast rule when it comes time to cleaning their favorite pair of jeans. Most hardcore collectors seem to have theories about avoiding the washing machine and its rinse-and-spin combination, choosing instead to place their pants in the freezer to de-funk them, hand wash them, or hang them to dry. But if you’re Victoria Beckham, it turns out you don’t wash them at all.

In fact, the designer told Elle after presenting her Victoria Victoria Beckham collection during London Fashion Week that the only time she washes her jeans is “if the kids spill [something on them], then I have to wash them, obviously, but even then it's only on cold wash.” But rest-assure, otherwise, Posh Spice is just like us, and that means “normally, no, I just don't wash them at all. I normally hang my jeans up, to be honest with you, to keep the shape.”

We’d listen to her, too, if we were you. During her presentation, Beckham asked attendees to not wear ripped denim or sneakers — likely because she was presenting her own version of the trusty staple. And not the oversized, dirty pair relegated as your last option for getting dressed when you need to do laundry. No, Beckham’s offering included flares, intentionally sand-blasted girlfriend jeans, skinny jeans with a raw hem, and light-wash jeans the wearer can “cuff or wear straight.” As for the rest of the collection, Beckham describes it as having a “bit of a cowgirl feel,” which is perfectly in line with everything we want to wear right now.

As a styling tip, Beckham suggests wearing your jeans with a cheeky statement T-shirt and sunglasses. “You could say I’m slightly obsessed with sunglasses?! Wearing glasses all the time, I like to say I’m in a dark but happy place,” the mother-of-four wrote on Instagram, captioning a photo of herself at the show. Done and done.

The Biggest Beauty Movement You Can Find All Over Instagram

Contrary to the over-plucked eyebrow trend of yore, the kind of fringe popping up on our feeds today is fuller than ever. The last few years alone have seen bold-brow outliers like Cara Delevingne, Lucy Hale, and Zendaya prove that the beauty standard for the "cool" eyebrow is no longer one-size-fits-all. In 2018, however, people are taking the look one step further, proudly showing off their unibrows both on Instagram and on the runways — and we don't hate it one bit.

If the body hair movement of our generation has proven anything, it's that you shouldn't feel self-conscious about the natural hair you have — and this extends to your eyebrows. Luckily, there's a crop of unibrow renegades all over social media lighting the way. So if the thought of getting another wax makes you want to curl up in a ball and cry, you might want to consider following their lead and let your (eyebrow) bush grow wild and free.

Need inspiration? We've rounded up our favorite unibrows on Instagram as of late. Because there's no time like the present to free the brow.

While the rest of us have been conditioned to think that sweet spot between both brows should be hairless, model Sophia Hadjipanteli got lucky. "If you’re in a family where your brother and dad also have really nice eyebrows, you’re never really self-conscious of having thick eyebrows," she told Harper's Bazaar.

The subtle red lip makes this look is very Frida Kahlo, no?

This model praised her photographer Adam Flowers for not photoshopping out her perfectly combed brow.

"I was born with a unibrow, so these are just my eyebrows, you know what I mean?" model Scarlett Costello recently told Refinery29. And she's right — it's just an eyebrow.

There's nothing like millennial pink to make your bold monobrow pop.

Ready to embrace the look? Remember one thing: be patient. Growing out your brows can be a long process. Just make sure you hide your grooming tool kit on your most restless days.

Even if you're ready to toss your tweezers, doesn't mean you have to toss your brow gel, too. Opt for a clear coat of your favorite formula to let your longer hairs stand out.

Feel free to skip the dark lip when you're rocking a bold look like this and opt for a clear gloss to make sure the trend really shines.

If anyone understands the ridicule you might face when owning your unibrow, it's Lorde. But after she was put on the cover of Vogue with her monobrow fully intact, she knew exactly how to celebrate: on Twitter.

Even if you weren't born with one connected brow doesn't mean you have to pass up on the movement. Natalia Castellar Calvani likes to keep hers as thick as possible.

And of course, we could never forget Grown-ish star Yara Shahidi for her famous brows. Although she keeps it tweezed for her character Zoey on the show, Shahidi expressed more than once that she's all about that unibrow life.

Everything You Need To Thrive When Going Freelance

$

Walking away from a steady 9-to-5 to pursue your dreams of going freelance can feel a little bit like jumping out of a plane: exhilarating and bold but also pretty terrifying. While the idea of choosing your own clients and setting your own hours is appealing, freelancing involves way more than freeing up your weekday calendar to do what you love. At the end of the day, you’ll need to figure out how you’ll stay afloat financially, which goes beyond just paying your bills on time. It’s a delicate balance that requires ingenuity, diligence, and a bit of flexibility.

If you’re considering making the transition to full-time freelance work (or have recently made the leap, like yours truly), the good news is you’re not alone. In 2014, the Freelancers Union commissioned a study that found about 34% of the American workforce was composed of independent workers, and that stat is expected to grow to a whopping 50% by the year 2020. With so many millions going freelance, there are more than a few tried-and-true techniques that can help make you an extra-efficient, higher-earning business of one.

Ready to learn more? Click through to discover seven key steps to aid you on your freelance journey, including managing your expenses (both personal and business) and tackling your taxes like a pro with Intuit.

Gather all the industry contacts you have.

First things first, grab a notebook (or pull up a spreadsheet) and make a list of all the people you’re acquainted with, both in your own industry and in any relevant adjacent industries. As a writer, my initial list included past and current editors I’ve worked with, plus creative directors and graphic designers. Don’t forget current coworkers you plan to keep in touch with, too, or anyone else you think will be open to putting you in contact with a new client. Once you have your list, consider letting them know you’re on the lookout for new work, but keep in mind there are also other, nontraditional ways to find projects. For example, sometimes editors will issue a call for freelance writers on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and other social media platforms. If you know where to look, you can tailor your social media scrolling to boost your business.

Start tracking and organizing your personal expenses.

If you're not already aware of what you typically spend on things like transportation, groceries, and shopping, making a budget can be a daunting task. The easiest approach involves keeping tabs on how much money goes into and out of your bank account for 30 days — that is, long enough to account for rent, other assorted monthly bills, morning coffees, and everything else you pay for on a daily basis. If using pen and paper seems outdated, the Intuit Mint app is a free, digital alternative for managing your funds. Whatever method you choose, having this information will make you better equipped to decide exactly what you should cut back on, where you could stand to double down, and how much you’ll need to earn in order to make your goals a reality.

Know your worth.

It can be jarring when a client asks you for your rate on the spot, so get ahead of the game. Research your skill set online, and talk to a few trusted colleagues about industry standards regarding pay — both hourly rates and flat fees. Furthermore, decide what your price range will be ahead of time in order to smooth out those client conversations as much as possible. Of course, there will be times when you and your client will have to negotiate before finding a price that’s right; therefore, I suggest reading up on how to hold your ground during those tough discussions. Above all, don’t be afraid to charge for what your talent and time are worth!

Illustrated by Kelsey Wroten.

Schedule, schedule, schedule.

Now that you don’t necessarily have to wake up early, commute to the office, and be at your desk by 9 a.m., it’s tempting to turn off your alarm and sleep in…every day. Pro tip: Don’t! Feel free to play around with your working style and see what suits you best — maybe you’re more productive in the evenings — but don’t lose track of your schedule completely. Keep regular meal times, don’t skimp on sleep, and don’t forget about self-care. Jumping from deadline to deadline without established work hours can quickly turn into a marathon session, so bake in time for a long bath, an at-home manicure, or whatever you need to feel calm and whole. I swear by my planner, using different pens to classify each day’s tasks — from meetings to workouts to face masks and TV time. If I notice my week is filling up with blue and gray ink (errands and work) and not much green and pink (social engagements and cultural events), it’s an immediate signal I need to balance my plans.

Illustrated by Kelsey Wroten.

Get smart about your taxes.

As a freelancer, you’ll quickly learn to stay persistent when it comes to getting paid, and it's crucial that you bring that same energy to tax season — aka when paperwork often starts to pile up. For those new to freelancing, Intuit QuickBooks Self-Employed can make things like invoicing and tracking expenses much easier. Once organized, your QuickBooks info can be transferred to Intuit TurboTax Self-Employed, a service specifically geared toward independent contractors. To help streamline the process of growing your business, Intuit also offers one-on-one help (should you need it) and assists with industry-specific deductions. It's a win-win situation that'll free up more time for you to do the work you love.

Illustrated by Kelsey Wroten.

Consider alternative ways to earn cash.

I’m good with kids, so I always pick up the phone when friends and family call in need of a date-night sitter. I also find it endlessly fascinating to listen to fellow writers’ Q&As, so I make myself available whenever I see a post looking for someone to do a quick transcription job. All in all, there will be times when your main freelance gigs slow down — prepare yourself by figuring out which of your other skills can make you money. Don’t be afraid to step outside of your lane to drum up some additional revenue.

Illustrated by Kelsey Wroten.

Remember to get up and out of the house.

Best case scenario: You’re now freelancing like a pro with a full client roster and a balanced budget. You’re living it up, but when there’s a lot of work to be done, it’s all too easy to become tethered to your laptop. Take breaks, walk around the block, or meet a friend at her office and do a long lunch. Like hitting the proverbial reset button, a bit of fresh air once a day can do wonders to clear the mind.
