Rihanna Is Working To Get Education Funded Worldwide

Rihanna is utilizing her platform as a celebrity to urge world leaders to financially commit to educating children in the world’s poorest countries. As an ambassador for Global Partnership for Education, the singer reunited with French President Emmanuel Macron to advocate for children at a recent summit in Senegal.

"We have made tremendous progress today but of course our work is never done," she said during her speech at the conference in Dakar on Friday, adding "We have a long way to go, and this is a fight we are never going to stop fighting, until every boy and every girl has access to education." According to Agence France-Presse, she co-hosted the event alongside Senegalese President Macky Sall and President Macron.

Rihanna became the first ever global ambassador for Global Partnership for Education in September 2016. She first connected with President Macron on Twitter last summer. They discussed the state of global education and agreed to work together to increase access to children around the world. This lead to her visiting the Elysee Palace in France to further discuss the issue with President Macron and his wife Brigitte. In 2016, France increased its contributions to GPE to a total of approximately $21 million over 2015 to 2017.

According to Unicef's United Nations Children's Fund, there are approximately 264 million out-of-school children and adolescents throughout the world. The majority of these children cannot attend as a result of poverty, conflict, and social barriers including gender bias against girls.

The Global Partnership's goal for the conference was to raise $3.1 billion from donors by 2020 to support the education of 870 million children across 89 developing countries. As part of that goal, GPE is striving to get these developing countries to allocate 20% of their overall budgets for education.

Rihanna put her 86 million person audience on Twitter to good use as she tweeted U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May, Australia's Malcolm Turnbull, and President Macron encouraging them to demonstrate their support through donating to Global Partnership for Education. They have all responded by increasing their donations toward education. Additionally, Erna Solberg, Prime Minister of Norway, recently tweeted Rihanna with a pledge from her country.

As Rihanna said, there is still a lot more to be done to provide children around the world with access to education and if anyone can shine a megawatt spotlight on the issue, it's Rihanna.

This Face Oil Made A Major Difference On My Acne Scars

Acne breakouts have a terrible reputation for popping up when least expected. From a first date to a career-making meeting, no important occasion is free from its frustrating grasp. Now, we all know that picking and popping is a no-no, but even with a hand's off approach, scars can happen. Unfortunately, that’s something I’ve become very familiar with.

Recently, I've been experiencing some pretty bad hormonal acne. After some admittedly weak moments of picking at my blemishes, I’ve also caused a lot of acne scars. But, just when I thought I might have to give up all hope on finding a cure, the Pai Rosehip Bioregenerate Face Oil waltzed into my life.

I’ve tried (and loved) many other facial oils in the past, but this formula is different. What makes it more advanced than other oils I've tried? According to the brand, the oil contains both rosehip seeds and rosehip fruit — which contain high percentages of omegas. These omegas, along with vitamin E and rosemary, regenerate the skin to help undo any damage done by blemishes or scarring.

Much to my surprise, the formula was not what I expected. It’s not a thick oil that leaves the skin feeling slick or greasy. Instead, it’s lightweight and it feels more like a serum. The bright orange color is also a little surprising, but fades as soon as massaged into the skin. But here's where the magic really comes in: in less than a week of use, I already started noticing a difference in the appearance of my skin. During that first week my small scars looked less noticeable. Then, after a few weeks, my larger scars started to smooth and fade a bit, too. The oil even remedied some of my troubling dry spots. My skin also feels incredibly soft and smooth, which, let's be honest, is way more than I expected. Moral of the story? No oil is a miracle in a bottle, but this one is getting a lot closer than most, which is good enough for me.

Natalie Portman Sticks To The Script & Makes Us Nostalgic For The '00s On SNL

Natalie Portman hosted Saturday Night Live in what felt like a return to the show in the mid-2000s. "The last time I hosted was in 2006," shares Portman. "Back then I was promoting V for Vendetta, and now the whole country is kind of promoting V for Vendetta." The film focuses on a police state and fascist government where an unknown vigilante attempts to subvert those in power.

The actress' opening monologue had less to do with her as it did the fast-approaching Winter Olympics. In fact, upcoming sporting events were a theme this week which included a sketch about the rivalry between New England and Philadelphia.

The episode as a whole was reminiscent of episodes from the mid-2000s, far less of a political tone in favor of sillier jokes. Portman reprised one of the shows most unexpected sketches from the last time she hosted. Additionally, both Tina Fey and Rachel Dratch returned to their old stomping grounds to appear in a sketch. Between the cast alumni cameos, Natalie Portman rapping, and references to Nickelodeon, I feel solidly back in a barely bygone era watching this episode.

Alec Baldwin brought back his Donald Trump impersonation which has been absent since the season reconvened after the holiday break. This time, the cast pokes fun at the feedback loop that exists between the President and Fox News.

Given Portman's off-script comment about "all-male nominees" while presenting the award for best director at the Golden Globes, I'm surprised they didn't include more political commentary; however, she did make one clear statement. While introducing musical guest Dua Lipa, Portman wore a shirt emblazoned with the words "Judge Aquilina," in support of the judge who presided over the Larry Nassar case. Based on her Golden Globes comment and the shoutout to Judge Aquilina, I was anticipating an episode that addressed more current events and social issues. While it can be nice to step away from that from time to time, it was a bit of a letdown. I think Portman could have pulled off more politically-charged subjects.

This episode also marks a three-week break for the show as the Winter Olympics kick off on February 9. Click through to see some of the highlights from last night's episode.

Fox & Friends Cold Open

Alec Baldwin makes an appearance as Donald Trump as he calls in to speak to the hosts of his favorite show, Fox & Friends, thus beginning an unending loop of praise and attention. Padding his ego and excessive compliments would be funny if it weren't so close to reality. I laughed, but my snickers were really just temporarily replacing frustration.

Saturday Night Live / YouTube.

Opening Monologue

In honor of the fast-approaching Winter Olympics, Natalie Portman's opening monologue is joined by commentators adjudicating her performance as host. For a monologue, it seemed light on the words.

Saturday Night Live / YouTube.

Weekend Update

Michael Che and Colin Jost kick off the segment by addressing House Intelligence Chairman Devin Nunes' memo which accuses the FBI of overstepping its authority in obtaining a FISA warrant to surveil former Trump campaign adviser Carter Page.

"First of all," says co-host Michael Che, "you know damn well Donald Trump didn’t read this memo. It’s four pages long."

This week seemed to depend more on guests rather than one-liners for which the sketch is best known. It seems like everyone needed a break this week from politics.

Saturday Night Live / YouTube.

Bunny

Natalie Portman is joined by an unexpected guest while lamenting the dire state of dating standards over drinks with friends. At first, their advice seems ridiculous but, after a while, Portman doesn't think it seems so unreasonable.

Saturday Night Live / YouTube.

Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards Orange Carpet

The Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards are an energetic affair. It can be a lot to keep up with, even for the hosts. Portman battles to do her job as enthusiastic co-host after losing her voice. As someone that grew up with Nickelodeon, I enjoyed their poking fun at the overzealous presenting.

Saturday Night Live / YouTube.

Alien Lover

A moment of passion gets weird when two would-be lovers discover that alien anatomy isn’t the same as human anatomy. Personally, this one was a bit juvenile for my liking.

Saturday Night Live / YouTube.

First Lady

Melania Trump, played by Cecily Strong, muses on her way to the State of the Union wishing she didn't have to go. Instead, she craves advice from someone who understands what it is like to be the First Lady. Her wish is granted when she is joined by Jackie O, Hillary Clinton, Martha Washington, and Michelle Obama who are full of advice.

Saturday Night Live / YouTube.

Natalie's Second Rap

A viral sketch returns when Portman releases her dark side and her inner rapper. I think I appreciated the shock value of Natalie Portman rapping the first time when Digital Shorts were newer to the show; however, the second time around, I wasn't into it. It fell a bit flat.

Saturday Night Live / YouTube.

Stranger Things 3

Millie Bobby Brown looks a lot like Natalie Portman, don't you think? Twitter seems to think so. Running with the comparison, Portman takes on the role of Eleven in a sneak peek of the third season of Stranger Things.

Saturday Night Live / YouTube.

Revolutionary War

The Super Bowl is upon us, and according to this sketch, the rivalry between New England and Philadelphia is as long as our country's history. Does anyone else wish Rachel Dratch would come back on the show more? I missed her and her impression of a Boston accent.

Janet Jackson Confirms She Will Not Perform At The Super Bowl

$

The halftime rumors have finally been put to rest. Janet Jackson won't be performing at the Super Bowl with Justin Timberlake. While Timberlake previously stated that neither Janet Jackson nor 'NSYNC would appear with him on stage in Minneapolis, many wondered if he was just trying to fool fans. In a tweet that got straight to the point, Jackson made it very clear the night before the big game that this was not the case.

"To put to rest any speculation or rumors as to whether I will be performing at the Super Bowl tomorrow: I will not," Jackson tweeted. “Thank you for your support and I do look forward to seeing you all very soon.”

There was speculation that Jackson would return to the Super Bowl for the first since the infamous wardrobe malfunction of the 2004 show in which Timberlake accidentally exposed her nipple. For many, it seemed like a chance for Jackson to get the justice she so deserved. While Jackson was banned from the 2004 Grammys, reports that she was banned from the Super Bowl were untrue. What is also true, though, is that while she was blamed in the court of public opinion for what would be dubbed "Nipplegate," Timberlake got away unscathed.

The rumors that Jackson would return to the Super Bowl gained traction after Timberlake's interview with Beats 1 host Zane Lowe in which he said that he made "peace" with Jackson over the Super Bowl. "Absolutely," Timberlake said when asked if he apologized to Jackson, adding, "I don't know that a lot of people know that. I don't think it's my job to do that because you value the relationships that you do have with people."

Despite Timberlake's apology, though, the New York Post reported that Jackson's family is still mad at Timberlake. “If he’s such a gentleman, he’d make sure Janet [Jackson] is there,” Jackson's father Joseph said. While another family member reportedly told the Post, “Justin’s solo career took off after that and Janet was blackballed. He says they are good, but let’s see him prove it and bring her out.”

Timberlake won't get a chance to prove that he and Jackson are on good terms, but, at the very least, fans now know that Jackson won't be at the Super Bowl. Someone who also won't be there? A hologram of Prince, which should allow fans of the Purple One to breathe a sigh of relief.

Larry Nassar Abused At Least 40 People After The FBI Opened An Investigation

After an investigation was opened by the FBI regarding Larry Nassar's then-alleged sexual abuse, Nassar continued to abuse at least 40 girls and young women before being taken into custody more than a year later, reports the New York Times.

The FBI was first notified in July 2015. At the time, the report listed three victims, two of which were not interviewed by agents assigned to the case for nearly a year. "I never got a phone call from the police or the FBI," Gina Nichols, the mother of gymnast Maggie Nichols, said. It was their initial information that sparked the federal inquiry. "Not one person. Not one. Not one. Not one." Now, the Nassar's accusers number 265 and counting.

According to the New York Times, information collected by the FBI included instructional videos of Nassar's unusual treatment methods which show his ungloved hands working around the private areas of girls as they are lying facedown on tables. The paper suggests that it was the FBI's inert pace that allowed the abuse to continue unnecessarily.

As the investigation continued across three cities in Texas, Michigan, and Indiana. All the while, Dr. Nassar continued his uncommon treatment techniques on young patients. They were not notified of the investigation or the allegations lodged against him. The consequence of that silence was that dozens more girls and young women were exposed to Nassar's abuse.

Officials at USA Gymnastics were made aware of Nassar's inappropriate techniques in June 2015 after Maggie Nichols' personal coach, Sarah Jantzi, overheard an alarming conversation Nichols' was having with another gymnast about "treatment" she received from Nassar. The then-president of USA Gymnastics urged Nichols' mother to remain quiet as the organization reported it to law enforcement. Weeks passed without it being reported. It wasn't until 41 days after they were made aware of the sexual abuse that gymnastics officials contacted the FBI.

It was at this time that gymnastics officials turned over videos of Nassar demonstrating his treatment techniques, one of which was called an "intravaginal adjustment." W. Jay Abbott, a special agent in charge of the FBI bureau in Indianapolis at the time, recalled his colleague's reactions to the videos. "At the time, it was being portrayed as a legitimate medical procedure. But to the layman, like ourselves, we were — 'You’ve got to be kidding me.'"

The next day, Nassar was quietly relieved of his position with U.S.A. Gymnastics. According to a statement issued after the fact, the organization was under the impression that "it should not take any action nor communicate anything that might interfere with the F.B.I.'s investigation."

It wasn't until an investigation by the Indianapolis Star in September 2016 that Nassar was exposed for what he really was. During that time, Nassar treated some of the youngest among the 265 accusers. He has now been convincted and sentenced to 175 years in prison.

Forget The Super Bowl & Celebrate Janet Jackson Appreciation Day

$

It's no longer Super Bowl Sunday, it's #JanetJacksonAppreciationDay. Before Justin Timberlake performs at this year's halftime show — without Janet Jackson, as she made very clear — Twitter is taking time to celebrate Jackson's legacy. Specifically, all the parts that have nothing to do with a wardrobe malfunction.

On Friday, filmmaker Matthew Cherry tweeted that fans of Jackson should take back Super Bowl 52. "We should do a # JanetJacksonAppreciationDay this Sunday," he wrote. "You know, reverse it." Those fans who've always considered themselves proud members of Jackson's Rhythm Nation heeded his call.

After the 2004 Super Bowl halftime show, which was dubbed "Nipplegate" after Timberlake accidentally exposed her nipple, many felt that Jackson was unjustly blamed for the incident, while Timberlake went unscathed. Case in point: he's now headlining the Super Bowl, while Jackson has yet to return.

Fans weren't looking to talk about Timberlake, though, they wanted to gush about Janet (Ms. Jackson if you're nasty) and all the ways she changed pop culture for the better. "Janet released a whole album, went on tour, decided to PAUSE to have a fresh baby at age 50, dropped that billionaire hub, and went back out on tour like nothing happened," one person tweeted, "Your fav could never."

"Everything about Janet Jackson in Poetic Justice is beautiful," Bitch's senior culture editor Evette Dionne tweeted. "The braids, alone, are iconic. The outfits. The monologues about Black womanhood, trauma, and grief. EVERYTHING."

In a string of tweets, Kevin Allred, who created the college course Politicizing Beyoncé , laid out why Jackson is still the best. "There's no Beyoncé 'Feminist' movement in 2013 without Janet first taking CONTROL." he wrote.

Allred also cited 1986's "Pleasure Principle" video as one of the absolute best. "Janet Jackson really made one of the greatest videos of all time by herself dancing in an abandoned warehouse," he tweeted. "Almost 31 years later and your faves still can't keep up."

Many fans pointed out Jackson's commitment to social issues. "In 1997, Janet released an anthem to a friend she lost to HIV/AIDS called "Together Again," Calvin Stowell, Chief Growth Officer at the Trevor Project, wrote. "It’s a beautiful and empowering song, and the video she released with it is stunning."

With "Rhythm Nation," Allred tweeted, Jackson "rewrote the Pledge of Allegiance in 1989 and created a social justice movement through pop music way before it became expected of artists to speak out."

Of course, there were some that couldn't help pointing out that even those not tweeting #JanetJacksonAppreciationDay might have been quietly paying tribute. "I love how @kerrywashington subtly did her own # JanetJacksonAppreciationDay by featuring only Janet Jackson songs on her epsd of # SCANDAL right before the SB," one fan tweeted.

Laverne Cox wasn't keeping her appreciation to herself, even coming up with some clever puns to celebrate Janet. "We love you Miss Jackson. It's all for you. When we think of you nothing else seems to matter," Cox wrote. "Get us all together again in this Rhythm Nation."

It was one person on Twitter, though, that seemed to sum it up best: "Every day is #JanetJacksonAppreciationDay." Nothing but respect for my Super Bowl halftime performer.

A Group Of Former Facebook & Google Employees Issue Warnings About Tech

$

0

Alarmed by the negative effects social networks and smartphones have had on society and mental health, a group of Silicon Valley technologists is coming together to challenge the companies they had a hand in creating.

The group called the Center for Humane Technology, alongside nonprofit media group Common Sense Media, are joining forces to plan an anti-tech addiction lobbying effort and ad campaign targeted at 55,000 United States public schools.

The Truth About Tech campaign is aimed at educating students, parents, and teachers about the dangers and side effects of excessive technology use, specifically the link between heavy social media use and depression. The campaign has partnered with Comcast and DirecTV who have donated media and airtime. Roger McNamee, an early investor in Facebook, joined the Center for humane Technology after the alarming realization of what he helped create. "Facebook appeals to your lizard brain — primarily fear and anger," he told the New York Times. "And with smartphones, they’ve got you for every waking moment."

The group's website explains that while companies like Google, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram have benefitted society in some ways, they are caught in a race for our attention to survive and make money. "Constantly forced to outperform their competitors, they must use increasingly persuasive techniques to keep us glued," the website reads.

The group of Silicon Valley insiders expects more to join them over time. They believe that their intimate understanding of the design techniques, business incentives, and culture behind how technology garners an inordinate amount of our attention will be the key to helping solve the problem. In an attempt to reform the technology industry, they plan to introduce a Ledger of Harms. The goal of the website will be to guide engineers who are concerned about the technology they are being asked to build. It will provide data on the health effects of different technologies as well as suggestions for how to make products healthier.

The new group also has plans for legislation to regulate the power of large tech companies. The Center for Humane Technology is focusing on two at the moment: a bill that would commission research on technology's impact on children's health, and another that would prohibit the use of unidentified digital bots.

"Reversing the digital attention crisis and realigning technology with humanity’s best interests," is the end goal for the Center for Humane Technology.

Kylie Jenner Has Welcomed Her First Baby

After months of speculation, Kylie Jenner announced that she gave birth to a baby girl on February 1.

She and her boyfriend, rapper Travis Scott, have kept the pregnancy private, and while it was all but confirmed, today's announcement is the only official comment Jenner has made. "I'm sorry for keeping you in the dark through all the assumptions," the announcement begins. "I understand you're used to me bringing along on all my journeys. My pregnancy was one I chose not to do in front of the world," Jenner continued. While many people, celebrity or not, choose to be very open and public about when they are expecting a child, everyone is entitled to choosing how they want and if they want to tell people. "I knew for myself I needed to prepare for this role of a lifetime in the most positive, stress free, and healthy way I knew how," she explained. Jenner went on to mention that it was never intended as a publicity stunt with the intent of a "big paid reveal."

Jenner and Scott first went public with their relationship at Coachella in 2017. The two seemed immediately inseparable as she joined him traveling across the United States on his Birds Eye View tour that year, reports Us Weekly.

Rumors of Kylie Jenner pregnant first began to emerge after TMZ broke the story on September 22, 2017. Regardless of who claimed they could confirm the story, Jennery's family kept completely quiet on the matter. When asked by The Cut, her mother Kris Jenner kept things vague. "Something happens every single day," she said. "You never know what is going to break at any moment."

A popular theory was that Kylie Jenner was her sister Kim Kardashian's surrogate; however, this rumor was quickly put to rest when Kardashian shared her journey finding a surrogate through an agency.

Jenner has kept out of the public eye for months now, though she did appear on the cover LOVE magazine in December. The photo, taken by her sister Kendall Jenner, did not give away much as it was a closely cropped photo of her face, shoulders, and hands.

"I appreciate my friends and especially my family for helping me make this special moment as private as we could," Jenner shared in her message.

To accompany the big announcement on Twitter and Instagram, Jenner posted a video to YouTube celebrating the birth of her daughter. It includes messages from her close friends and family about how they found out Jenner was expecting.

"When you're 20-years-old, you're just figuring out your life. You don't know what you want. You're an indecisive teenager and you're just becoming a young adult. There was one thing that your mom knew for sure, and that was you," Jenner's friend, the model Jordyn Woods, says to the camera in a message meant for her the baby girl.

Rumors have surrounded the couple ever since they started dating. Fans wanted to know: Are they dating? Are they having a baby? Are they engaged? Kylie Jenner made the decision to announce the news on her own time and share it with those closest to her.

"Pregnancy has been the most beautiful, empowering, and life changing experience I've had in my entire life and I'm actually going to miss it," wrote Jenner. "I've never felt love and happiness like this, I could burst! Thank you for understanding."

Jenner and Scott have not yet revealed their baby's name.

This is a breaking news story, we will update it with information as it becomes available.

It only took nine months, but Kylie Jenner has finally revealed she had first baby with boyfriend Travis Scott. Jenner announced the birth of her baby girl on Twitter, apologizing to fans for keeping this secret to herself. While also offering "a little glimpse at the last 9 months," with a video chronicling her maternity.

As excited as fans are to know Jenner is anew mom — and oh, they're excited — they're even more excited to see how other celebrities are reacting to Kylie's baby news. Especially, what Kylie's sisters have to say about it.

Shortly after Jenner shared the news her pregnant big sister Khloé Kardashian tweeted, "Cute mommy" in response to Jenner's home video. While her sisters, new mommy Kim and Kendall went the emoji route, tweeting lots of hearts.

Khloé then shared another post, this time showing off both of their pregnant bellies.

Kris Jenner had a bit more to say about the newest addition to the family. "God is SO good!!" she tweeted. "I am so excited and thrilled to welcome another precious baby girl to our beautiful, ever growing family. We are blessed beyond belief!"

This marks the eighth grandchild for Kris, with another one on the way — it's the fifth girl, which means we'll be keeping up with the Kardashians for generations to come.

Jenner's bestie Jordyn Woods tweeted "wooo fresh air" about being able to breathe a little easier knowing she won't reveal any baby secrets. She also retweeted a fan who called her the "real MVP. Held her friend down through the whole pregnancy and didn’t say a word to the world! Her loyalty is on 1000! I need a friend like her!!" A fingers crossed emoji was Woods' sign of appreciation.

Iggy Azalea couldn't keep it together while watching the over 11-minute clip. "Kylie Jenner's baby journey video made me want to cry," she tweeted. "Usually I blame crying whilst watching things on being "on a plane." I am such a wimp. Can I have 10 babies please."

Jenner's boyfriend and new daddy, Travis Scott might just take the cake for the best baby tweet: "2.1.18 4 ever. New rager in town. !!!"

Congratulations to Kylie and Travis on their little rager.

Everything We Learned From Kylie Jenner's Baby Announcement Video

After months of wondering when Kylie Jenner would announce that she was pregnant (because let's face it -- it was just a matter of time), the day has finally come. In addition to the normal announcement on social media, Jenner dropped a video to catch us up on the past several months of her life, when she was living below the radar to keep her pregnancy private and peaceful. It does not disappoint.

"One day, I was in your mom's bathroom with her and she took a little test," Jordyn Woods, Kylie's BFF tells us at the beginning of the video. It sounds like she and Jenner's assistant, Victoria Villarroel, did not expect the announcement. Woods says she didn't even know that Jenner was taking a pregnancy test, and when she passed her the stick she was completely surprised. "She gave us a look," her friend Villarroel recounts. Where was the video camera to capture that look because I would love to see it!

The video then follows Jenner and boyfriend Travis Scott to their OBGYN appointment for the 15-week sonogram, offering the world its very first look at their daughter. It's hard to tell much about how a baby looks from a sonogram, but it's safe to say this one looks very normal.

In-N-Out which was Jenner's major pregnancy craving. Her doctor advised her to do cardio and not eat fast food. Cut to Jenner ordering a double cheeseburger and fries from the drive-through of an In-N-Out. Don't let anyone tell you that you cannot have it all when you're pregnant.

We also learn in the footage that all those selfies from the neck up that Jenner has been sharing? They were to cover her very pregnant belly. And, we get an idea of how huge the number the of people who kept this a secret: her family, his family, their close friends, everyone who shot, edited, or worked on this video, her staff, his staff, the staff at In-N-Out...the list goes on.

If you were wondering where Kylie's baby shower was, when we were watching Kim have hers, she threw an all-pink baby shower. It had baby-themed cappuccinos, pink roses, polar bears. North West made the baby a cute onesie. Her friends are all wearing classic white pajamas, which is a major tonal difference from his sister's much more formal shower.

When asked to send a message to the baby at Kylie's shower, Kris Jenner says, "You've got the best mom and you're so lucky. This is such a blessing. It's going to be the most amazing journey. We pick up a slew of random facts in the middle: She was only four weeks apart from Kim's surrogate. Her baby likes sweet potato fries. Jordyn got the baby a pair of tiny Air Nikes. This baby already has more shoes than me. Kylie held Kim's new baby, Chicago when she was super pregnant. Rob & Dream were there. Kim wanted to "school" her on what her vagina is going to feel like during and after birth. Kylie passed and, honestly, that seems like the best life choice.

Justin Timberlake Played It Safe At Halftime When He Should Have Gone For It

After all the chatter this weekend about how he was doing Janet Jackson wrong and might be doing Prince wrong if he made him into a hologram, it felt like expectations were low going into Justin Timberlake's Super Bowl Halftime performance. Which is good news for him, because it meant Timberlake only had to do the bare minimum to impress us his audience.

Despite the divisive reputation he seems to have gained around the release of his latest album, Timberlake turned in a family-friendly Super Bowl performance. His set ran like a greatest hits track listing, never touching on any one song for too long. The most unexpected aspect of it was his use of the stadium in his set; where most performers stick to a traditional stage, Timberlake began his show from inside the stadium, here he sang the new single "Filthy" in a club-like environment. It was one of the most intimate feeling halftime performances in my memory, and it perhaps reflected the scale he felt fit him.

For a guy who insists he didn't make a country album, there was a lot of fringe on his Stella McCartney designed faux leather jacket. He might have brought the visual aesthetic of Man of the Woods on stage with him, but not a single additional song from the album made an appearance in his show. Anticipating what people most wanted to see, he ran through a medley of "Rock Your Body" (while walking down a catwalk), "Senorita," gave a major remix to the start of "SexyBack," "My Love," and "Cry Me A River." Those favorites from his first two albums built up a lot of goodwill, but during "My Love," he removed his jacket to reveal a silk-screened button up shirt with an image of a prairie and a man riding a horse. My goodwill dissipated on sight, though in fairness it was being pushed down by the arduous blasts of guitars over "Cry Me A River," which he desperately tried to turn into a rock song.

Timberlake paused for a breakdown here with a troupe of male dancers. His moves have held up, which is more than many pop stars in his generation can say. If he's not as nimble as he was in his 20s, his sense of timing has certainly stayed sharp. Timberlake then segued into "Suit & Tie," for which he donned a camouflage blazer, to match his camouflage pants I assume, and worked the mic like he was living life somewhere between Fred Astaire and Dean Martin. From there he strolled over to a piano worthy of Elton John to sing "Until the End of Time."

Then, his Prince tribute. There was no hologram. It was a nice rendition of "I Would Die 4 U." It was lovely to see Minneapolis covered in purple, with Prince's symbol surrounding the stadium. I understand, logically, why the NFL would have wanted to pay tribute to Prince. I understand why Justin Timberlake would want to do that, the man was a huge influence on him. If you don't, go read his tribute to Prince after his deat h. That said, it would have been a much better use of the time to right the wrong on a debt he owes to Janet Jackson. And people watching at home who haven't been tuned in to the hologram scandal all weekend are probably just thinking to themselves, "That was nice."

After Timberlake urges everyone to raise "two fingers in the air for Prince tonight," he performs "Mirror." Though it felt like the emotional ending to the performance, it wasn't! He kept going, because that Trolls song was a hit, and things wrapped up with a nice, long nugget of "Can't Stop the Feeling!"

Timberlake was a safe choice for this year's Super Bowl. Like all of the commercials that aired during the telecast, the NFL wanted to avoid anything political and keep it light. Timberlake is good at that, on the surface. But having a man fills a field with mirrors to look at himself performing does not create any last impression. His performance will be forgotten quickly. Considering what happened last time he took this field, perhaps that was exactly what he was going for.

How To Find The Right Serum To Transform Your Skin

Like booster supplements in smoothies and freshly pressed green-drink orders, the use of serums in skin care can at first seem like a superfluous, if not costly indulgence. Sure, these shots of concentrated nutrients might add extra oomph to our complexions, but if we’re already keeping our skin clean and hydrated, can adding a serum to the mix make that much of a difference?

According to Dr. Alexander Rivkin, a Los Angeles-based cosmetic surgeon, and Dr. Mary Lupo, a New Orleans-based dermatologist, just like with those shots of bee pollen or maca we might add to our juices for better health, serums can deliver a concentrated level of nutrients to the skin that can penetrate better than many moisturizers.

Whereas creams sit on top of the skin to form a protective barrier of hydration, serums are typically made from active ingredients that contain molecules small enough to penetrate the outer layer of the skin and deliver intensive doses of collagen builders, antioxidants, and other anti-aging ingredients deeper in the epidermis. And, as Lupo points out, because many formulations are water based, serums can also serve as great vehicles to deliver water-soluble ingredients, like vitamin C, beyond the skin’s surface for deeper absorption and to provide a brightening effect.

In fact, serums can be such heavy hitters, Rivkin doesn’t just see them as an added bonus to a skin-care routine, but as being “very essential.” Which isn’t to say that a serum should replace your moisturizer. Rivkin notes that after delivering such concentrated active ingredients, a moisturizer is needed to lock in hydration and provide a protective barrier. To really maximize these complexion boosters, he recommends cleansing with warm water (to maximize the products' absorption), applying a serum to a slightly damp face, and following with a moisturizer a few minutes later.

So, now that we know that serums should be an integral part of our skin-care regimen, how do we find our skin-boosting soul mate? Ahead, we asked Rivkin to identify the best active ingredients for each of the nine most common skin types. Read on to find out which one you should be adding to your daily routine.

SPF

The easiest way to make sure you're getting enough SPF? Slather it on with your serum. This bottle from Supergoop! delivers an SPF of 30. Just make sure to carry some extra protection to reapply throughout the day if you're going to be active.

Supergoop! City Sunscreen Serum SPF 30, $42, available at Sephora.

This serum and moisturizer duo packs on enough hydration to last all day and protects you from the bad, bad sun. (But it's only SPF 15, so make you to re-up throughout the day.)

Olay Total Effects 7-in-One Moisturizer + Serum Duo with Broad Spectrum SPF 15 , $14.49, available at Target.

Combination

For those fighting shine, adding an oil-based serum to their skin-care routine can result in a finish so slick, makeup can’t hold on. Luckily, the silicone derivatives in this vitamin-, and yes, oil-rich formula (it counts 10 plant oils among its ingredients) take the shine right out of the equation and help keep your makeup in place.

Hourglass No 28 Primer Serum, $65, available at Sephora.

This lightweight serum contains a host of ingredients meant to hydrate and brighten the skin, including rose water, peat extract, and fermented soy bean.

Belif Peat Miracle Revital Serum Concentrate, $60, available at Sephora.

"After washing my face, I usually slick on a little bit of vitamin C serum," beauty writer Khalea Underwood says. "My face looks so glowy and radiant, I don't even need highlighter."

DermHA* Acne Skin Brightening Serum, $48, available at dermHA*.

As this serum's name would suggest, the liquid is indeed full of free radical-fighting antioxidants, like vitamins C and E. It's also incredibly lightweight and hydrating, meaning it absorbs quickly while lending a luminous finish to the skin.

Kypris Antioxidant Dew, $67, available at Kypris.

— PAID —

We expect our anti-aging serums to do more than just correct — they should also protect. This one from Elizabeth Arden is infused with powerful antioxidants, such as Idebenone, to improve the look of sun-damaged skin and defend against environmental aggressors. Meaning, it's perfect for city dwellers who face sun and smog on the daily.

Elizabeth Arden PREVAGE™ Anti-Aging Daily Serum, $162, available at Elizabeth Arden.

Dry

Sure, it’s stocked with humectants designed to mimic the body’s natural ability to moisturize. And it boasts lipids like ceramides, which can improve texture by penetrating beneath the skin’s surface. But this pricey serum won us over with its ability to hydrate — and heal — skin so freakishly dry, it's practically peeling.

La Prairie Cellular Hydrating Serum, $210, available at Nordstrom.

Photo: Courtesy of La Prairie.

Even if you typically have oily skin, this hydrating concentrate never makes you feel like you're slick. It dries matte, but penetrates deep into the skin for long-lasting moisture. For people with extra dry, patchy skin, load this on underneath your daily lotion and trust that it will keep you looking radiant, not dull.

Aesop Lucent Facial Concentrate, $115, available at Aesop.

If you're in the market for a pricey (repeat: very pricey) serum, this one from Dr. Sturm is great. The hyaluronic acid-rich formula is incredibly lightweight, yet wards off flakes and dryness so well you might be tempted to skip moisturizer altogether.

Dr. Sturm Hyaluronic Serum, $300, available at Net-A-Porter.

Hyaluronic acid has been the en vogue ingredient for calming dry and dull skin woes as of late. If those concerns resonate with you, try Skin Inc.'s aptly named Hyaluronic Acid Serum. With a patented Japanese seaweed, we're ready to slather it on our faces every night.

Skin Inc. Hyaluronic Acid Serum Long-Lasting Hydration, $45, available at Sephora.

Dr. Dendy Engelman, director of dermatologic surgery and laser medicine at Metropolitan Hospital, recommends this serum because it's hydrating, as well as for its ability to repair and protect, thanks to a ceramide complex, vitamins, and antioxidants, which plump fine lines and combat free radicals from environmental damage.

Derm Institute Antioxidant Hydration Serum, $120, available Derm Institute.

Rosacea

Rivkin points to calming ingredients — like the arnica and green, white and red teas found in this preservative-free formula — as helpful anti-inflammatories for those with rosacea. But, this serum does reddened complexions one better by packing mulberry root and bearberry extracts, thought to further reduce redness, while also wielding a free radical-fighting triple-threat, thanks to goji berry, pomegranate, and grapeseed extracts.

June Jacobs Redness Diffusing Serum, $60, available at Birchbox.

Diane Berson, MD, associate clinical professor of dermatology at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City, recommends Neocutis Pêche for treating rosacea because it combines caffeine, moisturizer, and a vasoconstrictor to target redness from multiple sources.

Neocutis Peche, $78.75, available at LovelySkin.

Acneic

“Drying out acne-prone skin will only make your skin produce more oil,” Rivkin warns. So, he suggests those with blemish-prone skin seek a serum that both exfoliates and hydrates — like this one, which contains glycolic and salicylic acid, plus glycerin to moisturize.

H20+ Calming Corrector, $25, available at H20+

Photo: Courtesy of H20+.

Another great option for breakout control comes from aesthetician Renée Rouleau. It's formulated specifically to target wrinkles and acne thanks to a blend of acids (salicylic, lactic, and glycolic), niacinamide, and allantoin.

Renée Rouleau Pore + Wrinkle Perfecting Serum, $48.50, available at Renée Rouleau.

Dry, acne-prone skin types will revel in this formula. Why? It hydrates skin without being greasy — and helps nix breakouts.

BareMinerals Blemish Remedy Anti-Imperfection Serum, $42, available at Sephora.

Sensitive

Those with sensitive skin are generally instructed to ease up on the retinol so as not to agitate their already delicate complexions. But, this dry oil — comprised of nine cold-pressed superfood seed oils, and free of allergen-inducing essential oils — boasts natural retinol by way of broccoli oil, to help soothe skin and minimize the look of pores. Plus, it’s packed with anti-inflammatories, which Lupo recommends.

Sunday Riley Juno Hydroactive Cellular Face Oil, $125, available at Net-A-Porter.

A heavy dose of hyaluronic acid and milk proteins soothe and hydrate sensitive skin.

REN Evercalm Anti-Redness Serum, $46, available at Sephora.

As a more affordable option, this serum works well for those who have dry, sensitive skin. Enriched with tried and true hyaluronic acid, as well as collagen and aloe, the serum is calming and soothing.

First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Hydrating Serum, $36, available at Sephora.

Pigmentation

We can’t totally undo skin damage caused by SPF-free afternoons spent as kids, but as Rivkin and Lupo note, vitamin C can help lighten discoloration, while brightening the overall complexion as well. This C-stocked formula also includes moisturizing glycerin, and retinol, another Rivkin favorite, to help exfoliate dead skin cells.

DermaQuest C Infusion Serum, $88, available at DermaQuest

Photo: Courtesy of DermaQuest.

Vitamin C isn't just great for brightening: It also contains powerful antioxidants that "fight and reverse damage from free radicals that wreck your skin cells," says dermatologist Dendy Engelman, MD, of Manhattan Dermatology and Cosmetic Surgery. This one, by SkinCeuticals, is a derm favorite.

Skinceuticals C E Ferulic Serum, $162, available at Skinceuticals.

The serum contains a potent blend of exfoliating acids (glycolic, lactic, tartaric, citric, and salicylic) along with hydrators like raspberry extract and horse chestnut. And yet, it's still gentle enough to use every night. One beauty editor recently finished the bottle and noticed that the dark spots that had developed after a bad reaction to a facial months prior had almost completely disappeared.

Drunk Elephant T.L.C. Framboos Glycolic Night Serum, $90, available at Sephora.

Aging

Rivkin suggests those fighting the visible effects of time seek a serum with retinol, as it "reduces pore size, smoothes texture, and lightens brown spots, and vitamin C to strengthen the skin and protect it from further damage.” This organic, all plant-based serum boasts vitamin C via coconut water and retinol by way of tara tree and chicory root.

Eminence Bamboo Firming Fluid, $58, available at Dermstore.

Afraid of tech neck, under-eye bags from staring at a screen all day, or lines on your forehead from glaring at the ceiling during yet another company meeting? This serum is made for that — and city dwellers especially. The best part? The formula islightweight, so it absorbs almost instantly and won't leave behind a sticky residue.

Caudalie Vine Activ Glow Activating Anti-Wrinkle Serum, $52, available at Sephora.

If most retinol-infused serums are too drying for you, try out this formula from Trufora. The vitamin A active is just as effective as retinol, and is balanced with hydrating hyaluronic acid to coddle your skin while it goes to work. (Even better, the formula is free of all harsh chemicals, sulfates, and detergents, so even the most sensitive type can use it.)

Trufora Night Serum 85, $50, available at HSN.

Plumping any fine lines is all about intense levels of hydration — and this serum has got it. It's formulated with three different sizes of hyaluronic acid so it doubles as your daily dose of moisturizer and serum.

Kate Somerville Wrinkle Warrior 2-in-1 Plumping Moisturizer + Serum, $95, available at Sephora.

Oily

“Serums are designed to go underneath a moisturizer, but for someone with very oily skin, a serum alone may be enough to hydrate,” Rivkin says. We found this quick-absorbing, oil-based serum actually helped regulate our own oil production and negated the need for a moisturizer, allowing us to skip straight to an SPF.

Osmia Organics Face Calibration Serum, $50, available at Osmia Organics.

Photo: Courtesy of Osmia Organics.

If you have oily skin, you know how wary you feel to try anything that's meant to hydrate and nourish — god forbid our T-zones go into grease hyperdrive. But this oil-free formula brightens with vitamin C and delivers just enough hyaluronic acid to leave skin softer than if you slept in a sheet mask.

Renée Rouleau Skin Drink Concentrate, $42.50, available at Renée Rouleau.

This formula contains a peptide inspired by the muscle-freezing effect of snake venom, so it claims to tighten skin and smooth fine lines over time. Plus, it has blurring capabilities and dries quickly, making it a perfect primer.

Rodial Snake Serum O2, $162, available at Rodial.

Dull

The French may not get facelifts, but they certainly indulge in mesotherapy — vitamin and mineral injections that are believed to brighten and lift the skin. This serum acts as an echo-meso, delivering calcium, copper, and zinc, along with brightening vitamin C and hydrating hyaluronic acid, which Rivkin notes, “draws moisture to the skin.”

Lierac Concentré Mésolift Toning Radiance Serum, $60, available at Lierac.

Photo: Courtesy of Lierac.

If your skin feels and looks lackluster, then load on the vitamin C. An added bonus: gallic acid brightens skin while vitamin E supplies your daily dose of hydration.

M-61 Vitablast Serum, $92, available at Bluemercury.

Safe for sensitive skin sets, this brightening formula immediately goes to work on lightening acne scars and evening out your skin tone. Even better, it's hydrating enough to take the place of your daily moisturizer.

Caudalie Vinoperfect Radiance Serum, $79, available at Sephora.

The best things come in threes, and this serum is packed with brightening vitamin C, gently exfoliates your skin all day long, and offers up serious antioxidant protection for a smoother, more even toned complexion.

Kiehl's Powerful-Strength Line-Reducing Concentrate 12.5% Vitamin C, $62, available at Sephora.

Not to sound like a broken record that’s being played on repeat by every beauty editor ever, but this skin-transforming liquid deserves every ounce of praise it gets. (Which is a lot.) The texture is more of a weightless essence than a traditional serum, but it imparts just the right amount of moisture that you’ll only need SPF over top for daytime. But you’re not here for the hydration: You’re here for the bright, clear complexion, the barely-there pores, and the soft, fresh, youthful skin that’s at the bottom of every bottle of this stuff.

Paula’s Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid, $29, available at Paula’s Choice.

This serum immediately makes your skin look brighter while vitamin C and glycolic acid improve tone and texture over time.

Sunday Riley C.E.O. Rapid Flash Brightening Serum, $85, available at Sephora.

Exfoliation is important to promote cell turnover (which leads to brighter skin), and this Sunday Riley chemical exfoliant with lactic acid is magical because it creates a soft, smooth complexion in the most gentle way — while you sleep.

Sunday Riley Good Genes All-In-One Lactic Acid Treatment, $158, available at Sephora.

"Ovine and plant placenta stem cells are at the heart of MZ Skin's Rest & Revive Night Serum, an ultra-light, moisture-boosting formula that stimulates collagen and elastin and has made my dullish, reddish winter skin look brighter and healthier — like I haven't been boozing harder than ever this month and snacking on sugar gummies as I type this — in a mere two weeks' time," R29 senior beauty editor Alix Tunell says. "In conjunction with the brand's vitamin C serum, which has significantly reduced the melasma around my eyes after almost three months, I've never felt better about skipping foundation ( occasionally)."

MZ Skin Rest and Revive Restorative Placenta and Stem Cell Night Serum, $320, available at Bergdorf Goodman.

Glossier Just Made An Old-School Beauty Staple Cool Again

In the four years since Glossier first launched, the company quickly proved itself as the brand for millennials. Aesthetically-pleasing packaging, effervescent highlighters, and skin-care products that exude "cool" — what's not to love? But for its most recent product, Glossier is putting a modern spin on an old classic you have probably only associated with your grandma: the solid perfume.

Glossier's You Perfume Solid is the brand's take on a travel-friendly version of its OG You fragrance, which launched last fall. But instead of adding red and white details to its traditional pink packaging, Glossier is turning it up a notch. The small balm fits neatly inside a weighted egg that slides open and closed — a look that actually reminds us a lot of the sleek design from cosmetics brand Lilah B. But instead of white packaging, Glossier's solid perfume is the perfect shade of millennial pink. Because of course.

But it's not just the product's exterior that makes it different from the original Glossier You fragrance. This waxy formula also melts effortlessly into the skin, and the scent — a blend of pink pepper, amber, and musk — feels different too. When I tried it myself, it somehow felt more cozy and inviting than the spray version, perhaps because it dried down nicely with my skin's natural pH. Plus, unlike some sprays or roller balls, this balm clung to my skin and lasted a full workday (and then some).

If you ask me, Glossier's done the imaginable: made solid perfume cool again. Maybe our grandmothers were right the whole time.

Glossier Perfume Solid, $22, available today at Glossier.

How Retinol Can Help With Pretty Much Every Skin Problem

Lobster-red skin, stinging sunburns, and flaky complexions have long been the stuff of retinol-use lore. So, it’s no wonder that some of us stay away from the stuff, thinking it's too harsh. Dermatologists swear by retinol, counting it as a must-have for just about everyone (second only to SPF), even those with sensitive skin. And, research over the past 30 years has shown that retinol can tackle a ton of dermatological concerns, including acne, wrinkles, and rough or discolored skin. Not bad for a single active ingredient.

“I don’t know a single dermatologist who doesn’t use a retinol product on their skin,” says Heather Rogers, MD, a Seattle-based dermatologist and clinical assistant dermatology professor at the University of Washington. “We’ve all read the studies and we all use it.” Before we dive in, you should know that there are three levels of retinoids: pure retinoic acid, which is the strongest and prescription-only; retinol, which is sold over the counter and is weaker and less irritating than the pure stuff; and retinol derivatives, which are also sold over the counter and are more gentle than retinol.

It's true; you might not completely avoid irritation if you use the stuff. But, you can minimize it by being strategic. For someone completely new to the world of retinol, Dr. Rogers suggests using a derivative twice a week to avoid stressing out the skin. If yours still reacts adversely, she recommends moisturizing beforehand. Once you're comfortable with biweekly applications, you can increase the frequency until you're comfortable with everyday use.

For some, the next step would be transitioning to a prescription concentration of retinoic acid. But, no matter what stage you're in, don’t expect overnight results. While some research shows improved skin in as little as a month, Dr. Rogers says you should commit to a retinoid product for at least three months before judging whether or not it works for you.

Read on for the non-prescription strategies to soothe your particular skin woes.

Dry Skin
The retinol in Luna is delivered via cold-pressed oil, which makes it hydrating and corrective.

Sunday Riley Luna Sleeping Night Oil, $105, available at Sephora.

While we love Sunday Riley's Luna, we know the herbal scent isn't for everyone. Instead, try Pestle & Mortar's version of a anti-aging night oil, which is packed with an effective retinol and a hydrating blend of avocado, jojoba, and grape seed oils.

Pestle & Mortar Superstar Retinol Night Oil, $109, available at Pestle & Mortar.

This treatment kicks ass in the wrinkle-fighting and hydration departments, thanks to an A-plus combination of retinol, glycerin, and niacinamide.

Olay Intensive Repair Treatment, $28.99, available at Ulta Beauty.

For a more affordable option, check out this serum from Neutrogena, which we think works just as well as the expensive stuff. The lightweight formulation contains retinol to brighten the skin and fade dark spots while hyaluronic acid provides an extra kick of hydration.

Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle Repair Serum, $23.99, available at Ulta.

Hyperpigmented Skin
While you may be drawn to retinoid products with vitamin C, since they have pigment-fighting properties, Joshua Zeichner, MD, director of cosmetic and clinical dermatology research at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York City, cautions against those. “Vitamin C and retinol can inactivate each other,” he says, so choose your products wisely. He suggests using a vitamin C serum in the morning to prevent further dark spots and a retinol product in the evening to repair damage.

SkinMedica Age Defense Retinol Complex .25, $60, available at SkinMedica.

Retinol can be irritating for a lot of people, but this derm-developed cream contains plant extracts to help quell redness and stinging and is considered a must-have by many sensitive-skinned editors we know.

ZO Skin Health Ossential Advanced Radical Night Repair, $170, available at ZO Skin Health.

Dr. Rogers says those with hyperpigmentation should be particularly religious about their sunscreen use. “Retinol will help lighten the skin, but after five minutes in the sun, your body is going to make more brown,” she says. “So, you have to be incredibly diligent about limiting your exposure to UV, in addition to using retinol in the evening.”

Verso, $150, available at DooBopPhoto: Via Verso.

Dull Skin
Even if your skin can tolerate a daily retinol dose, if you're looking to brighten up your complexion, it may be best to take a few nights off. While retinol can help even out your skin tone and minimize wrinkles, it won’t necessarily slough off those dead, dulling cells. Dr. Rogers suggests alternating between a retinol product and a glycolic cream for your evening routine.

Dr. Dennis Gross, $88, available at SephoraPhoto: Via Dr. Dennis Gross.

Think of this night cream as a multi-level brightener. It contains a gentle exfoliant to clarify skin and retinol to trigger collagen production and cell turnover.

NeoStrata Retinol + NAG Complex, $78, available at SkinStore

A glycolic cream can help pull away dead skin cells and reduce the appearance of brown spots. Some new products on the market, like Kate Somerville RetAsphere Micro Peel, combine glycolic acid and retinol. To further brighten your complexion, Dr. Rogers suggests using a vitamin C serum during the day.

Kate Somerville, $90, available at Neiman MarcusPhoto: Via Kate Somerville.

Tired Eyes
A big misconception is that the skin around the eyes is too sensitive to tolerate retinol. Not so, says numerous doctors. But, because that area is more delicate, you should use a product specifically designed for it, says Dr. Zeichner. “It’s better to use a retinol eye cream than a face cream on the eyes,” he says. “Eye creams are typically specially formulated for sensitive eye skin. Many contain hydrating ingredients, lower retinol concentrations, or a special vehicle to minimize the irritation.”

Dermalogica, $75, available at DermalogicaPhoto: Via Dermalogica.

Formulated with retinoids, peptides, and vitamin C, this is a multitasking eye cream worth writing home about.

Philosophy Miracle Worker Retinoid Eye Repair Cream, $68, available at Sephora.

Dr. Rogers suggests you start by using a product with a weak retinol concentration twice a week, like La Roche-Posay Redermic R Eyes, which uses .01% pure retinol, and work your way up to more frequent usage before moving on to a stronger formula.

La Roche-Posay, $46.95, available at Drugstore.comPhoto: Via La Roche-Posay.

Sensitive Skin
Those with sensitive skin are the most likely group to shy away from using retinoids. But, they can still reap some of the rewards, as long as they ease into it slowly. Start with retinol derivatives (retinyl palmitate, retinyl acetate, and retinyl linoleate) or natural forms of retinol (like chicory root, tara tree, and beggars stick flower), which are all gentler and less irritating. And, look for products with simple ingredient lists. If they still stress out your skin, Dr. Rogers and Dr. Zeichner suggest applying a moisturizer first. Once you’re ready to graduate to a stronger dose, look for a time-release, low-level retinol that will deliver gradual results.

Ren, $60, available at SephoraPhoto: Via Ren.

Dr. Rogers points out that the most sensitive areas on the face are those where skin rubs together: the corners of the mouth, where the nose meets the cheek, and the eyelid area. Those with sensitive skin should build their retinol tolerance slower in these parts of the face.

Paula's Choice, $28, available at Paula's ChoicePhoto: Via Paula's Choice.

Pull out your calendar: this cream vanishes crow's feet and circles in a matter of 12 weeks.

ROC Eye Cream, $24.99, available at Ulta.

Acne-Prone Skin
Retinol packs a powerful punch when it comes to fighting acne and the shadowy scars it leaves behind. Regular use helps clear up your complexion by pulling dead skin cells out of pores, which makes them look smaller. It's also an anti-inflammatory, which helps with redness.

Dr. Rogers suggests the blemish-prone use a face wash with benzoyl peroxide (an anti-inflammatory) or salicylic acid (which helps dry out excess oil) in the morning, and follow up with a retinoid at night, which will help stimulate cell turnover and lessen any post-pimple dark spots.

Bioelements, $62, available at BioelementsPhoto: Via Bioelements.

There was once a time where you needed a prescription to obtain a prescription-strength retinoid, but everything changed when Differin was approved for sale over-the-counter. Its star ingredient, adapalene, is proven to fight acne breakouts with a gentle, non-inflammatory formula.

Differin Gel, $10.99, available at Target.

Rosacea/Reddened Skin
Dr. Rogers says retinol has been shown to help with rosacea in the long term. Even so, “this is the group that has to be the most careful, because they’re prone to more redness already and retinol makes people redder in the beginning,” she says.

She suggests rosacea sufferers make sure their skin is relatively under control before starting a retinol treatment. “Don’t start on a retinoid while having a rosacea flare,” she advises. “I would prescribe a rosacea medicine for two to four weeks before I have them start using a retinoid product."

iS Clinical, $135, available at SkinStorePhoto: Via iS Clinical.

When you first start to incorporate retinoids into your skin-care routine, look for simple, cream-based products with short ingredient lists and go very slowly. In the mornings, apply your anti-redness cream and sunscreen. In the evenings, wash your face, apply moisturizer before your retinoid product, and follow up with the anti-redness cream. Be prepared to experience a little discomfort early on. “It’s important to know that your rosacea might be a little worse in the first two weeks,” Dr. Rogers says. “But, don’t give up.” This Olay product combines retinyl propionate with niacinamide to provide your skin with moisture while also preventing redness.

Olay Regenerist Intensive Repair Treatment, $23.99, available at Drugstore.com.

Oily Skin
Those with oily skin will likely tolerate retinol best, says Dr. Rogers. People in this group also tend to adapt to non-prescription formulas faster and become candidates for Rx-strength retinoic acid in a shorter period of time.

Revision Retinol Complete, $90 available at Revision Skincare

Both Dr. Rogers and Dr. Zeichner say those with oily skin should use a cleanser with salicylic acid to absorb excess oil; then apply an oil-free retinol formulation (in a higher concentration, if your skin tolerates it well). The strongest-concentration retinol product available OTC contains 2% retinol. If you're a retinoid newbie, start with a 1% concentration or lower; then work your way up to 2% before seeking a prescription.

Dr. Brandt, $85, available at SephoraPhoto: Via Dr. Brandt.

If clogged pores are your biggest concern, this multi-tasking treatment is a crucial nighttime step. Before your moisturizer, smooth a pea-sized amount on your face. In time, you'll be rewarded with a clearer, smoother complexion.

Philosophy Help Me, $49, available at Philosophy.

Combination Skin
If you have combination skin, do some evaluating before choosing a retinoid. Notice where your skin is more oily and where you tend to break out, as well as where it's more dry or flaky. Choose a retinoid geared toward your complexion's multiple aspects.

Vichy, $55, available at VichyPhoto: Via Vichy.

Oilier zones will likely play nice with retinol, so you may be able to apply a stronger concentration to these areas of your face, like 1%. But, in drier areas, consider using something less strong at first, like a .5% or lower concentration that also contains moisturizing ingredients.

Amarte, $93, available at AmartePhoto: Via Amarte.

When it comes to combination skin, finding the right treatment that won't sway your complexion to the other end of the dry-to-oily spectrum can be difficult. This vitamin- and retinol-loaded serum is the happy medium to keep any dry patches at bay, while still fighting early signs of lines or wrinkles.

Dr Roebuck’s Boost & Tighten Serum, $58, available at Sephora.

Wrinkles & Age Spots
The first studies to show that prescription retinol helps improve sun-damaged skin were published back in 1986 and 1988. These days, over-the-counter retinol is just as effective for treating sun damage as the prescription kind, says Leslie Baumann, MD, a Miami-based dermatologist and author of The Skin Type Solution. Retinol is known to battle sun damage by increasing collagen production.

Shani Darden, $95, available at Shani Darden

To help tackle the different aspects of skin aging, both Dr. Baumann and Dr. Rogers suggest pairing retinoid usage with antioxidant and sunscreen products during the day. Dr. Rogers recommends using a vitamin-rich serum and sunscreen in the morning, followed by a retinoid product at night.

Biossance Squalane + Phyto-Retinol Serum, $78, available at Sephora.

This skin-smoothing treatment is full of retinoids geared to work on sensitive skin.

Kate Somerville DermalQuench Liquid Lift + Retinol Advanced Resurfacing Treatment, $98, available at Kate Somerville.

Anti-Aging

They say good things come in threes, so consider this serum's tri-active technology (a blend of a retinoid, a retinol, and a retinol booster) a must.

Murad Retinol Youth Renewal Serum, $88, available at Murad.

The new cult brand's 1% formula delivers all the magic of retinol, for way less.

The Ordinary Retinol 1%, $6.70, available at Ordinaries.

In addition to the retinol, you'll also find hydrating ceramides to boost your skin's water retention and line-reducing brown algae extract and rosemary oil that protects from further damage. Now, that's the real MVP.

Algenist Advanced Anti-Aging Repairing Oil, $82, available at Sephora.

How To Get Rid Of Cystic Acne, According To Top Derms

Think back to middle school when year after year, person after person would tell us that we’d grow out of our acne. We get it: The adults in our lives wanted to be encouraging. So they threw out a glimmer of hope — an “it gets better” kind of thing that has us bamboozled all these years later. Because after countless cycles of hormonal acne, we’re here to say that it does not, in fact, always get better: A 2011 study showed that nearly half of women aged 20-29 has clinical acne. One of the most notorious types? The cystic variety, which can be brought on by monthly hormonal cycles — and can be way more intense to deal with than your average pimple.

“Cysts are like balloons under the skin that are filled with oil, but have no place to go. As your oil glands make more oil, cysts become enlarged, the wall cracks, and inflammation develops,” explains Joshua Zeichner, MD, a New York-based dermatologist and Director of Cosmetic and Clinical Research in Dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital. Unlike more surface-based pimples, he explains, cystic zits can’t be picked: “They have no connection to the surface of the skin so any attempt to pick them will cause more harm than good.”

Extractions are also out when it comes to cystic zits. S. Manjula Jegasothy, MD, a Miami-based dermatologist with a celebrity-rich clientele, notes that these suckers can start deep in the skin, at one-to-two millimeters beneath its surface. “They’re extremely difficult, if not impossible, to extract or ‘pop,’ even by a skin-care specialist or dermatologist,” she says. In short, these zits are deep-rooted and tough to fight, which is why our pros suggest booking an appointment with a derm as a first line of defense. Prescribed treatments like oral antibiotics, some types of birth control pills, Aldactone, (a pituitary hormonal oral medicine), and isotretinoin (what used to be known as Accutane) top Dr. Jegasothy’s list of prescribed treatments.

Though Accutane has proven controversial for some, Marina Peredo, MD, a New York-based dermatologist and associate clinical professor of Dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital, also likes the medication to treat cystic acne. “For most patients, it's a cure and will prevent deep scar formation if started early in a course of a disease,” she says, noting that a proactive approach is key. “It is very important to start Accutane is soon as possible with severe cystic acne because prolonging the start of the treatment can cause deep scars, which are very hard to treat even with the most aggressive laser treatments later.”

Dermatologists also use cortisone shots as a magic wand to instantly deflate cystic bumps, though Dr. Jegasothy notes that this methodology is falling out of favor. “They are known to occasionally cause indentations which may persist up to three months after the pimple has gone,” she warns. Instead of using steroid injections, she turns to combinations of oral antibiotics (typically used for two to four months), light chemical peels (to help control oil and reduce clogged pores), topical medications, probiotic cleansers (which can help balance skin), and lasers.

Bottom line? If you want to get serious about cystic acne treatment, there’s no getting around time-consuming derm visits and prescribed meds. But here’s the upshot: We can take action from our own bathrooms to help minimize cystic acne from forming and help control those mighty bumps in between doctor’s visits (or until we meet the deductible on our health insurance, anyway). Ahead, get pro advice on how to best tackle deep-rooted acne at home.

This cream has a mixture of 5.5% benzoyl peroxide and LHA, a derivative of salicylic acid, to fight acne and exfoliate.

La Roche-Posay Effaclar Duo, $39.95, available at La Roche-Posay.

Dr. Jegasothy likes probiotic cleansers for acneic patients, as they help keep the skin’s good bacteria balanced. This one uses probiotics and other plant-derived ingredients to help clear pores without drying out skin.

Nerd Skincare Clarifying Cleanser, $20, available at Nerd Skincare.

Dr. Peredo notes that salicylic or glycolic acid peels can help keep breakouts in check. This gel-based peel not only contains skin-clearing glycolic acid and charcoal, it gently gathers gunk and dead skin cells into clumps as you exfoliate (something that’s mesmerizing to watch) and leaves skin super-soft.

Boscia Charcoal Deep-Pore Exfoliating Peel Gel, $34, available at Sephora.

The star ingredient of this spot treatment is monolaurin, a coconut-derived antibacterial that not only helps address cystic zits, but also addresses acne that results from sweat. What’s more, it’s built to keep skin cooler, which helps prevent excessive sweating, which can create even more zits.

VMV Hypoallergenics id Monolaurin Gel, $30, available at VMV Hypoallergenics.

Mario Badescu’s Drying Lotion is an effective acne spot treatment that's also cost effective. Because it has sulfur, it works to reduce oiliness and unblock pores. There's no need to rub or blend this stuff into your entire face, just use a cotton swab to dot it on any spots, hit the hay, and you'll see reduced pimple size by morning.

Mario Badescu Drying Lotion, $17, available at Bloomingdales.

Keeping skin hydrated means preventing its own overproduction of pore-clogging oils. This moisturizer contains ingredients high in linoleic acid to help balance sebum and pH levels. It also boasts antibacterials and antifungals, and yes, ingredients to hydrate, too.

True Botanicals Pure Radiance Oil, $110, available at Barney’s New York.

Yeah, we know it can feel kind of counterintuitive to put a face oil atop oily and acne-ridden skin. But this one, a dry oil made with 1.5% salicylic acid, tea tree, and chamomile, helps address congested skin while treating fine lines, dullness, and hyperpigmentation.

Sunday Riley U.F.O. Ultra Clarifying Face Oil, $80, available at Sephora.

We use this vegan mask as an overnight spot treatment to help minimize oncoming acne. Dr. Peredo notes that algae can "have a tightening effect, which can help reduce the size [of cystic acne] slightly.” But don’t take that to mean the mask makes skin feel tight when used on the entire face; you'll feel soft and hydrated after rinsing.

Osea Red Algae Mask, $48, available at Osea Malibu.

Benzoyl peroxide can help shrink cysts, Dr. Peredo notes. A whopping 4.5% benzoyl peroxide is used in this skin-clearing wash, a concentration that might normally irritate skin. But the ingredient is microencapsulated, which controls its release (to cut irritation) while allowing for better penetration.

Glytone Acne BPO Clearing Cleanser, $38, available at Glytone.

When dealing with breakouts, it can often feel like skin never gets quite clean enough. But over-washing can strip skin of oils and send oil production into hyperdrive, creating even more zits. This cleansing duo is the perfect antidote. It includes a detoxifying cleansing oil and sea mud and charcoal cleansing bar that allows you to double cleanse and target blemishes without totally drying skin. (Plus, Marilyn Monroe used it, so there's that.)

Erno Laszlo Detoxifying Cleansing Set, $28, available at Nordstrom.

Anyone lucky enough to have visited Kate Somerville’s LA clinic knows that she’s a wizard when it comes to clearing skin. (Required reading in the waiting room: an entire picture book of patients with and without acne, before and after treatment.) This newly-launched cleanser (inspired by the best-selling EradiKate Acne Treatment treatment) is one way to get Kate’s skin-clearing skills at home. It uses 3% sulfur, along with honey and rice bran extracts, to gently unclog pores.

Kate Somerville EradiKate Daily Foaming Cleanser, $38, available at Neiman Marcus.

This wand doesn’t feel like it’s doing much when held to the face — there’s no painful zapping or stinging effect, just a warming sensation that feels like sitting outside on a nice day. But after three to four uses in a week, our monthly crop of cystic zits began to dwindle. Its power? Using light (without UV, of course) to target the beneath-the-skin bacteria that’s linked to acne.

Tria Beauty Positively Clear Acne Clearing Blue Light, $169, available at Tria Beauty.

Many affordable exfoliants yield an abrasive texture that feels too harsh on already-compromised skin. This one (which contains salicylic acid and charcoal to help check acne) uses microcrystals to clean more gently. Its key ingredients are also derm-approved: Dr. Peredo calls charcoal “a tried and true ingredient for keeping pores clear.”

Bioré Charcoal Acne Scrub, $6.49, available at Target.

We swear by Renee Rouleau's Anti-Cyst Acne Treatment, but the celebrity esthetician has just given us cystic zit sufferers even more of a fighting chance at clear skin with this new anti-inflammatory mask, made especially to target cystic zits before they blow up. Prone to monthly hormonal breakouts? Use this gel mask a few days before your cycle to treat acne before it forms.

Renee Rouleau Rapid Response Detox Mask, $60.50, available at Renee Rouleau.

This mask zaps hormonal pimples and heals cystic acne, but makes doing so feel downright chic. While it has exfoliating AHAs that work to clear acne, the most plentiful ingredient is honey, which means it'll keep your skin moisturized and soft — and clarified.

Tata Harper Clarifying Mask, $68, available at Sephora.

For a more potent spot treatment for painful, cystic acne, try this topical serum that targets the acne formation beneath the skin's surface, forcing the cyst to a head. Seriously, it's like magic.

Renee Rouleau Anti Cyst Treatment, $45.50, available at Renee Rouleau.

When you've hit your breaking point and need to push reset on your skin, this resurfacing peel will do the trick. Thanks to a powerful trio of AHAs (glycolic acid, lactic acid, and lemon extract), your skin will feel brand new after just one use.

Ole Henriksen Instant Transformation Lemon Facial Peel, $48, available at Sephora.

The queen of extractions, Dr. Pimple Popper (aka Sandra Lee), developed this potent spot treatment. It's loaded with salicylic acid and witch hazel to exfoliate the skin and remove oil.

The Real Reason You Keep Getting Dry Patches On Your Skin

2018's Top Natural Hair Trends Will Work On Every Length & Type

$

0

If 2017 taught us anything about natural hair, it's that you're not limited to just a twist-out. Over the last year we've seen some of our favorite celebrity stylists and stalk-worthy social media faves push the envelope with their cuts, colors, and protective styles. And thankfully, they're just getting started.

The pros predict that 2018 will bring even more inspiration for natural and curly folks of all lengths and textures — a little something for everyone. "You’ll see many more textured hairstyles being embraced everywhere," Vernon François, celebrity stylist and creator of the Vernon François Collection, tells Refinery29. "Curly, kinky, coily, and wavy hair will fully embrace their ‘inner-frizz'."

Celebrity stylist Takisha Sturdivant-Drew, who works with Kerry Washington, agrees. "Natural hair will be a part of all aspects of life," she says. "And I especially want to see it in the corporate industry, which used to close the door to natural hair. Today's modern woman is fashion-forward — and her hair should reflect that."

Ready for a major dose of natural hair inspiration? We tapped top pros for the cuts and looks that will be huge next year, ahead.

Angled Afros

These days, your Afro doesn't have to be as circular as the planets. "Next year, we’ll be seeing the return of the triangle: flatter on top and wider on the side," Wes Sharpton of Hair Story Studio told R29. "It really took off again with Solange, who’s such a huge influencer, and has changed how people think about Afros in general."

Photo: Via @saintrecords.

François agrees. "You’ll probably see a lot more shapes integrated into red carpet hairstyles. Celebrities like Uzo Aduba, Cynthia Erivo, Lupita Nyong'o, and Tracee Ellis Ross continue to dominate this space and inspire women and men to create cool, unique shapes with their hair," he says. A great example is one of François' own: a side-parted, tapered cut with plenty of volume up top.

Photo: Kevin Mazur/Wireimage.

Mandee Tauber, an Oribe Educator, says that naturally-textured hair falls in a triangle shape anyway — so it’s important to create a strong and defined shape, like this cut done by Felicia Leatherwood.

The Shag Cut (Done In All Lengths)

"We're seeing lots of great shapes that give a nice emphasis on natural textures," celebrity colorist Daniel Moon notes. In fact, we spotted plenty of the cuts — in all lengths — during fashion month earlier this year and can't wait to see more to come.

The pros agree, however, that the mid-length shag will be the most popular. "The biggest trend in hair length is still the medium length," Shai Amiel of Capella Salon says. "Girls are realizing hair doesn't need to be down to the floor to look great." Amiel, who's known in L.A. as the "curl doctor," notes that medium-length curls are especially good for those who want to frame their face.

"I would love to see short hair come back," celeb hairstylist Christian Wood says. "Short, jaw-length bobs give an effortless look that feels soft and cool." Insider tip: Alanna Arrington is one of the top models to follow for shag cut inspo.

Piecey Fringe

Here's a look that works for those growing out short hair: bangs. Franck Izquierdo, co-founder of IGK Hair Care is obsessed with the romantic meets rock-and-roll vibe, as seen on Tracee Ellis Ross (who was styled by Chuck Amos). "The '80s are back. Fringe is easy to style and versatile to wear," he says. "You can wear them on the side or separate them in the two sections in the middle, like curtains."

Photo: Via @chuckielovehair.

Curly bangs need not be wispy. Model Khadijha Red Thunder shows us that a thick, curly set can be just as easy to wear as curtain fringe.

Amiel notes that many of his clients, like model Amanda Harvey, are requesting heavier bangs. He considers it a power move. "In the past, curly girls would straighten their fringe because they were told it doesn't look good curly," he says. "I'm happy to see girls trying new looks and getting fabulous results that look current and edgy."

Photo: Courtesy of Shai Amiel.

Short Lengths

Don't ever let anyone bash the grow-out phase that follows a short haircut again — because there are major benefits. "It's easier to keep it looking healthier when it's a shorter length," Amiel says. "It also takes a lot less time to care for and style. By cutting hair shorter, it makes the hair look so much thicker, too. It's also easier to let this length air-dry, which is great for layered shapes." Translation: It's as easy as it gets.

The Best Drugstore Foundations For Oily Skin Types

$

0

There are a lot of upsides to having oily skin. For example, you always have a built-in glow, rarely suffer from annoying dry patches, and some even believe that producing more oil might help prevent wrinkles. Still, while having active sebaceous glands might have its moments, oily skin can make wearing foundation a struggle — namely because oily skin tends to make whatever you put on top of it slide right off.

This phenomenon often manifests itself in frustrating ways, like answering the phone only to find half your face smeared all over the screen afterwards or looking in the mirror at noon to see the zit you artfully concealed a few hours ago in full view. It's moments like these that turn makeup from a form of expression to an anxiety-inducing pain in the ass. Luckily, a good mattifying foundation can really help.

Ahead, we've rounded up our favorite oil-controlling and long-wearing formulas. Oh, and did we mention they're cheap, too? It's a win-win, ahead.

We like to think of this foundation as the drugstore's best "hug-proof" formula. Translation: It won't come off on collars, turtlenecks, or your S.O.'s T-shirts. The lightweight formula controls oil so well, we often skip powder all together.

Revlon, $7.49, available at Target

Those with combination skin (for example, an oily T-zone, but dry patches on the cheeks) will love this creamy formula. Unlike most of the foundations in this lineup, this one has a "demi-matte" finish, meaning it won't stamp out every last bit of grease on your face, but it will manage to keep your skin looking fresh and generally oil-free for hours.

L'Oréal, $12.99, available at Ulta Beauty

Fun fact: We tested this $6 foundation against a $44 one and it held its own. Despite its full-coverage finish (which, by the way, can cover everything from acne scars, to redness, to pimples), the foundation manages to look skin-like when tapped on with a damp sponge. Plus, it's long-wearing, matte (but not flat!) finish, means it clings to our oily T-zones all day.

Wet n Wild, $5.99, available at Ulta Beauty

When it comes to matte foundations, this one has a sheer, more natural finish than most thanks to its medium coverage. Don't let that scare you off though, one layer will mattify your skin and even out discoloration, but two or three will bring you into full coverage territory.

Maybelline, $7.99, available at Ulta Beauty

This long lasting, foundation-meets-concealer hybrid can cover just about anything without looking cakey or heavy on the skin. We like tapping it on over our comlexion with a damp sponge, then going in with a smaller brush to conceal problem areas that need more coverage.

Milani, $9.99, available at Ulta Beauty

Not only do these drops have a matte finish, but they can also be mixed into face lotion or tinted moisturizer for custom, sheer coverage.

NYX Cosmetics Total Control Drop Foundation, $13.99, available at Ulta.

Kylie Jenner & Travis Scott Got Matching Tattoos — & Fans Think It's A Clue

Welcoming a child into your life warrants a major celebration. For some, it's a festive cigar with friends and fam. For others, it's a home video capturing every tear of joy. But for new mom Kylie Jenner and dad Travis Scott, the celebration came in a different form: with matching tattoos.

Famed celebrity tattoo artist JonBoy — who has worked with Jenner in the past —posted the tattoos to his Instagram late Sunday night. The picture shows what appears to be the backs of Jenner and Scott's ankles, each bearing a tiny tattoo of a butterfly. "Congrats to @kyliejenner & @travisscott for your little miracle 🦋 ," JonBoy wrote in the caption.

In less than a day, the photo has elicited over 35,000 likes. And, if you ask Jenner's fans, this couple tattoo might be more than just fresh ink. Some believe the tattoos could be a major hint to the baby's name, which has yet to be revealed. "This kid’s name is gonna be fuckin Butterfly," one user commented on JonBoy's picture. But other's are taking a deeper dive into the meaning, saying, "Vanessa translates to butterfly 🤔🤔."

Given that Kylie just gave birth last Thursday, some are speculating whether the couple got inked while Jenner was still pregnant. According to the American Pregnancy Association, the main risk of getting a tattoo while pregnant is contracting an infection, such as Hepatitis B or HIV, so it's vital to go to a registered practitioner who uses sterile equipment and maintains a pristine working space. There is not sufficient research on how the dye could affect the baby's development, according to the organization, but many pros suggest waiting until giving birth to be safe.

Whether this tattoo is a name reveal or just a symbol of new life, we have to agree on one thing: These micro tattoos are a sweet way for the first-time parents to welcome in the newest addition to the Kardashian-Jenner clan.

We have reached out to Jonboy for comment and will update the post when we have more information.

Cold weather brings with it statement knits, oversized puffer jackets, and – on a slightly less glamorous note – dry, dehydrated hands. Despite being the most exposed part of our body during the colder months, they're often the most neglected, in part because it can be tricky to find a product that sinks in fast while still packing plenty of moisture. So we've found the heavy-duty skin protectors that not only hydrate, but are also fast-absorbing and, most importantly, non-greasy. Read on for our edit of the balms, creams, salves, and lotions that will keep your palms, nails, and cuticles soft and slip-free all year round.
