Where It Girls Go For Perfect Hair

We know, we know — it’s easy to get stuck in a rut and head to the same salon every time you need a trim or a root touch-up. But if you’ve developed a bit of a wandering eye and are ready to branch out, we’ve got you covered. From major salons backed by big-name stylists to smaller, neighborhood-y gems, here are eight new spots in New York City and Los Angeles to check out next time you need a cut, color, or a little blowout therapy.

Marie Robinson Salon, New York City
Simply put, the new location from Robinson — the (legit!) colorist to the stars — and her business partner, hairstylist Abell Oujaddou, is ginormous. The sprawling, airy, loft-like space has 50 salon chairs, 14 shampoo bowls, and a gorgeous waiting room big enough to rival some New York studio apartments. But, rest assured — this is no impersonal hair factory. “We wanted to make it luxurious, but comfortable,” says Oujaddou. “Our artists love to create, so we gave them a space to do their thing.”

They also added dozens of little details that make it infinitely more comfortable for clients to do their thing. There’s a private “quiet room” that you can duck into to take a call (or breast-feed!), a phone-free front desk — so there’s no waiting while the receptionist fields a call, and even an elaborate air-filtration system that pumps clean air into the salon every 30 minutes. That means you’ll never spend another afternoon inhaling ammonia fumes.

And, of course, the stylists are top-notch. Hansen Liu rocks at cutting (and blowing out) textured hair; Mark is the guy to see for beachy, believable highlights.

The Deets:

Cost: Haircuts, $175 and up; blowouts, $65; color, $175 and up
Famous clients: Emma Stone, Scarlett Johansson, Michelle Williams
Products available: Oribe, Wella, Colorist Cure

Marie Robinson, 40 West 25th Street, 10th Floor, New York, NY; 212-358-7780.

901too, Los Angeles
The sister salon to Nine Zero One, this West Hollywood “beauty lounge” is owned by celebrity hairstylist Riawna Capri and colorist Nikki Lee. The menu includes all manner of blowouts and braids, as well as makeup, nail, and spray tan services.

We hear that Chauntal is the makeup artist to book for soft, pretty, no-makeup makeup, while Joey and Krystina are the masters of bouncy blowouts. And once they’re hooked, the biggest beauty junkies can score discounts by signing up for one of the salon’s three levels of membership, including the Black Card, which buys unlimited hair, makeup, and nail services — for $800 a month.

The Deets:
Cost: Blowouts, $40 and up; makeup,$30 and up
Famous clients: Julianne Hough, Nina Dobrev, Jennifer Morrison
Products available: Unite, Tarte, Jouer, Smashbox

901too, 901 Westbourne Drive, West Hollywood, CA; 424-322-9012.

Eva Scrivo Salon, New York City
When you first walk into Scrivo’s new Flatiron location, it feels like you’ve detoured into a fancy brownstone's living room. The reception area has a distinct uptown vibe, with honey-toned walls and a stunning fireplace. But turn the corner, and things start to lighten up. The magic happens in a giant, sun-filled loft punctuated with massive windows (all that natural light is ideal for painting on flawless color).

The menu is just as staggeringly vast as the space. In addition to haircuts and color services, you can book a facial, manicure, pedicure, or wax. Those blowouts, though! Antonia gave us one that lasted a full seven days. We’re still dreaming about it.

The Deets:
Cost: Haircuts, $95 and up; blowouts, $65; color, $120 and up
Famous clients: Samantha Bee
Products available: Shu Uemura, Kérastase, Leonor Greyl, Baxter of California

Eva Scrivo, 139 Fifth Avenue, 2nd Floor, New York, NY; 212-677-7315.

Spoke & Weal, New York City
What happens when you install an edgy West Coast salon in Manhattan? “A clean, minimalist, kind of backstage-y workshop feeling with a downtown, Soho vibe,” says colorist and salon co-owner Christine Thompson. Well, naturally.

With outposts in L.A. and San Francisco, this industrial-chic salon — famed for its dry-cutting technique — is poised to woo New Yorkers as well. Cool touches like black T-shirts instead of robes, sculptural leather chaise lounges at each shampoo station, and blowdryers attached pulley-style to the ceiling feel right at home below Houston.

Even the styles have a hip, downtown bent. Sure, you could get a sleek blowout, but why not make like the cool girls and try a textured lob or a “dusty candy” dye job in shades of purple, pink, or blue?

The Details:
Cost: Haircuts, $65 and up; blowouts, $45 and up; color, $80 and up
Products available: Aveda

Spoke & Weal, 147 Grand Street, New York, NY; 646-869-1052.

Salon Ruggeri, New York City
The intimate space, created by hairstylist Gregorio Ruggeri and his interior-designer partner Craig Longhurst, has an undeniable chic factor. From the pink velvet couch to the jet-black fireplace, the stunning salon feels like the coolest ever apartment, or coziest ever art gallery. In addition to cuts, color, blowouts, and makeup, you can browse the exclusive collection of jewelry.

And if you’re really in the mood to shop, get this: Nearly everything in the salon — from the art to the midcentury modern furniture — is for sale. We see your A-line bob, and raise you an armoire.

The Deets:
Cost: Haircuts, $150 and up; blowouts, $75 and up; color, $120 and up
Famous clients: Shy celebs will feel right at home here: The staff doesn’t name names!
Products available: R+Co, Christophe Robin, La Biosthetique, Evo

Salon Ruggeri, 254 Fifth Avenue, 4th Floor, New York, NY; 212-229-2094.

Marie-Lou & D Salon, New York City
With exposed brick and plush, Louis XIV-style furniture, this new French-inspired spot was designed to bring a little bit of Paris to NYC. Tucked away in a corner of Soho, the 18-station salon offers cuts, color, manis, pedis, waxing, and even Caudalie facials.

Perhaps the best part: They’re fast. We got a blowout (on long, curly hair, no less) and a brow wax, and walked out in just under an hour. We plan on booking our next appointment tout de suite.

The Deets:
Cost: Haircuts, $105 and up; blowouts, $45 and up; color, $85 and up
Famous clients: Hilary Duff
Products available: Kérastase, Shu Uemura, Caudalie

Marie-Lou & D, 345 West Broadway, New York, NY; 212-390-8666.

RA Hair House, Los Angeles
The brainchild of three former Warren Tricomi hair pros (Audrey Rae, Kennedy Van Dyke, and Whitney Olson), RA (pronounced “raw”) offers cuts, color, extensions, makeup, brow services, and spray tans, and the vibe is basically California with a capital “C.”

Located in a converted bungalow, the salon looks out on a tree-lined patio — and you can even get a service done out there! (Backyard blowouts, anyone?)

“All of us here really focus on healthy, natural-looking hair,” says Rae. “We use what you have and just make it better, manageable, and beautiful.” Case in point: The salon’s made-to-order raw, organic oil treatments, which are cocktailed for each client to treat anything from frizz to damage to itchy scalps.

The Deets:
Cost: Haircuts, $156 and up; blowouts, $86 and up; color, $126 and up
Famous clients: Naya Rivera, Lydia Hearst, Rumer Willis
Products available: Oribe, Kérastase, Kevin Murphy

RA Bar, 7931 Santa Monica Boulevard, West Hollywood, CA; 323-651-4545.

Licari Cutler, New York City
Perched high above Fifth Avenue in the Valentino building, this Midtown spot is brought to you by two bona fide beauty legends: colorist Louis Licari and hairstylist Rodney Cutler. “The vibe of the salon is luxe meets cutting-edge,” says Cutler — and his talented staff certainly exemplifies that. There’s colorist Jeffrey (a.k.a. “The Blonde Doctor”), who's known for his lightening prowess; hairstylist Anthony, whose razor-precision cuts have a cult following; and Vanessa Collington, who styles and cuts curls and textured hair to perfection.

Plus, don’t miss the salon’s unofficial mascot: Licari’s teacup Yorkie, Isabella. She’s the one in the diamond collar. (It was a gift from a client, BTW!)

The Deets:
Cost: Haircuts, $120 and up; blowouts, $70 and up; hair color, $120 and up
Famous clients: Emmy Rossum, Susan Sarandon, Sofia Coppola
Products available: Redken

Licari Cutler, 693 Fifth Avenue, 15th Floor, New York, NY; 212-758-2090.
