The No-Fail Guide To Banishing Frizz — For Good

While the summer may have some beauty benefits (hello, dewy skin!), it can seem pretty much like a crapshoot for your hair. From protecting your color to maintaining moisture, one of the most frustrating dilemmas many of us face is frizz. Despite the fact that some of us may be more prone to it, we’re all susceptible to the fuzz. (Yes, no matter how straight or thin your hair is.) The fight is on — and thanks to advance technology and a game plan from the pros, it’s not going to be that difficult to keep your strands frizz-free this summer. Check out the slides ahead for some tips.

“All hair textures suffer from frizz,” explains Jan-Marie Arteca, a stylist at the Jeff Chastain Parlor in NYC. “The severity of the it depends on how dry, curly, coarse or fine and brittle the hair is.”

Begin the war by starting in the shower. “Using a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner will help keep your hair stay healthy throughout the summer as you battle the elements,” Arteca says. Sun, chlorine, and salt water will take toll on your strands by drying them out — and no matter what your hair type, dry hair frizzes. Have a curly or coarse mane? Shampoo every other day with a moisturizing formula (we like Oribe Shampoo and Conditioner for Moisture and Control). Skeptical about using moisturizing products on your tresses if you have fine hair? Trust us, Nexxus' Hydra-Light Weightless Moisture Shampoo and Conditioner were made for you.

One key element to preventing frizz is to never disrupt your hair's cuticle. In other words, be gentle. Instead of rough-drying your hair with a towel, simply squeeze the towel around your strands to soak up excess moisture. Next, immediately apply a serum before blow-drying. “As soon as your hair begins to dry, the frizz begins to form,” says stylist Harry Josh. Serums will be your best friend because they coat your hair and repel frizz-causing moisture.

Of course, the type of serum you use depends on your hair texture. If you have fine hair, you’ve probably had complications in the past, because even though you know you need to use it, you don’t want your hair to look greasy. Try a lightweight serum like this one from John Frieda (they’re made for you). If you have thicker hair, don't worry about using a heavier formula — your hair can take it.

If you plan on heat-styling, use a wire brush (so it heats up) that’s half boar bristle and half nylon; this will help deliver smoothing results without breakage. To seal your cuticles, (yes, this is the finishing touch); go over your strands once with a flat iron. If you’re super Type A, Josh suggests spraying a toothbrush with hairspray to nail down those top fly-aways. Frizz, we hardly knew ye.
