It’s a makeup collab more than 20 years in the making. Before J.Lo became a powerful multi-hyphenate with a sweeping collection of fragrances, and before Demi Lovato birthed Lovatics by Demi, Tejano singer Selena Quintanilla, best known as just Selena, seemed likely to achieve the kind of international superstardom that spawns a cottage industry of eponymous makeup lines and fragrances. But in 1995, just two weeks shy of her 24th birthday and right as she was entering the international stage, the Queen of Tejano Music was fatally shot by the president of her own fan club.
Now, MAC has released the first images of its 2016 collection honoring the singer, who has remained both a musical and stylistic influence years after her tragic death. The collection, dubbed #MACSelena, includes three lipsticks in shades of deep red (Dreaming of You), pinky red (Como La Flor), and the perfect '90s brown (Amor Prohibido). Also included are two shadows: a purple (Selena) and pink (Fotos y Recuerdos), as well as a Techno Cumbia Blush Duo in Ven Conmigo and Blunt. “I wanted the colors to be about her personally, what she wore on- and offstage,” the late singer’s sister, Suzette Quintanilla, who worked on the collection, says in a statement through MAC.
As if this fantastic news weren't enough, MAC has also announced that it will offer early access to #MacSelect members to shop the collection. Not a member? Don’t worry, you can still sign up to get in on the action.
Of the highly anticipated release, Suzette Quintanilla says it’s destiny fulfilled. “Helping to create this collection brings me back to all those late-night conversations on our tour bus when she spoke of having her own makeup line one day,” she says. “If Selena were here, she would be beyond ecstatic to have this happening. History is being made.”
