OITNB, Jessica Jones & The Good Wife Snubbed By Emmys

We laughed, we cried, we shook our fists at the sky. This morning's Emmy nominations announcement came with several surprises, several victories, and several snubs. What else is new?

The exclusion of Christian Slater, Lady Gaga, Rachel Bloom, and Mozart in the Jungle proved that the Golden Globes aren't necessarily a strong indicator of subsequent success. The Big Bang Theory, Orange is the New Black, and Modern Family (which picked up one nomination) seem to be losing favor. Empire got locked out of Outstanding Drama Series, The Good Wife is ending on a sour note, and Downton Abbey 's usual slew of supporting acting noms were whittled down to a single shoutout for Dame Maggie Smith.

It's a shame that Ben Whishaw and London Spy didn't get more love. Similarly, what does Outlander have to do to get some recognition? Are we the only ones who think Krysten Ritter was robbed? Where are Lizzy Caplan and Michael Sheen?

Here, some of the Emmy snubs we're struggling to explain.

Outlander

Caitriona Balfe sunk her teeth into some heavy material (read: the loss of her daughter, Faith) this season and it's hard to believe that Emmy voters didn't show any love. Simon Callow's deliciously campy portrayal of the Duke of Sandringham also seemed like a shoo-in for a Guest Actor nom, but voters thought otherwise.

Orange is the New Black

OITNB's fourth season seems to have kicked up a fair amount of backlash. Is that why the awards-season favorite failed to earn a nomination despite back-to-back wins by Uzo Aduba in 2014 and 2015? We expected recognition for Lori Petty or Samira Wiley at the very least.

The Good Wife

Alas, the legal drama has ended with a whimper, rather than a bang. The Emmy favorite received just one nomination this year: Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series for Michael J. Fox. For what it's worth, Christine Baranski and Alan Cumming will always be on our short list.

Jessica Jones

Krysten Ritter certainly deserved an Emmy nod, but it didn't happen. Is it possible she'll have better luck once she's no longer competing with Orphan Black and Tatiana Maslany?

Full Frontal with Samantha Bee

Our new favorite talk show earned a writing nomination, but was edged out in the Outstanding Variety Talk Series by the boys club of Bill Maher, Jimmy Kimmel, Jerry Seinfeld, Jimmy Fallon, John Oliver, and James Corden. Humph.

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend

Rachel Bloom seemed slated to follow her Golden Globes success with an Emmy nomination. No such luck. Female-centric shows Girls and Broad City also came up empty-handed.
