Women Of Hollywood Announce Their Plan To Tackle Sexual Harassment With #TimesUp

$

2017 was the year of #MeToo. Just hours into 2018, 300 powerful women in Hollywood are ushering in the era of #TimesUp, The New York Times reports.

Actresses, producers, executives, and other entertainment industry power players — including Reese Witherspoon, Shonda Rhimes, America Ferrera, Ashley Judd, Eva Longoria, Amber Tamblyn, Kerry Washington, Lena Waithe, Natalie Portman, and Emma Stone — have joined forces to launch Time's Up, an initiative which aims to take down sexual harassment not only in Hollywood, but in blue collar jobs as well.

A full-page ad in The New York Times and the Spanish-language La Opinion paper revealed Time's Up's approach to addressing sexual harassment on a broader scale. The initiative has already raised $13 million towards a legal defense fund to "help survivors of sexual assault and harassment across all industries challenge those responsible for the harm against them and give voice to their experiences," according to the open letter.

Time's Up, which was formed soon after allegations against Harvey Weinstein were reported in October, will also push for legislation that takes action against companies that harbor perpetrators of sexual harassment. Gender equality in studios and talent agencies, and the discouragement of non-disclosure agreements, which are often used to stop employees from speaking out about poor treatment, are also on the group's agenda.

While the initiative strives to be inclusive, the open letter makes it clear that the Time's Up signatories will hold their industry accountable. That includes raising awareness for the #MeToo movement by wearing black to the Golden Globes, which air January 8.

“It’s very hard for us to speak righteously about the rest of anything if we haven’t cleaned our own house,” Grey's Anatomy, Scandal, and How to Get Away With Murder executive producer Rhimes told the Times.

“If this group of women can’t fight for a model for other women who don’t have as much power and privilege, then who can?"

If you have experienced sexual violence and are in need of crisis support, please call the RAINN Sexual Assault Hotline at 1-800-656-HOPE (4673).

The Best Teeny-Tiny Zodiac Tattoos For Every Sign

When you think about it, deciding to get a tattoo is only half the battle. Picking out your design comes next, and that's an agonizing process for many. After all, the possibilities are endless and can feel overwhelming, especially given the fact that you have complete freedom to ink whatever, wherever — oh, and it's on your body for life.

That's why tattooing your zodiac sign (which, unlike a partner's name or your current favorite TV show, will probably never change) is such a strong choice. Even though it's a popular design, there are unlimited options for making it all your own. Plus, aside from being beautiful, zodiac tattoos speak for themselves, meaning you won't have to constantly field questions from nosy people asking what your tattoo means.

Ahead, we've rounded up 12 of the prettiest zodiac tattoos to inspire your next piece.

Aries
March 21 to April 19

Finger tattoos are a popular spot for teeny-tiny tats, like this minimalist and elegant Aries symbol.

Taurus
April 20 to May 20

More than just a flower vine, the stems of these dainty black and white blooms actually form the Taurus constellation.

Gemini
May 21 to June 20

This abstract take on Gemini twins was inked using one single, continuous line — a trend we're seeing pop up more and more among our favorite tattoo artists.

Cancer
June 21 to July 22

The Cancer constellation looks even daintier with detailed dot work.

Leo
July 23 to August 22

Cara Delevingne inked a tribute to her Leo sign with this stunning lion portrait on her pointer finger.

Virgo
August 23 to September 22

There are many ways to put your own personal spin on a zodiac constellation — and this rainbow-colored Virgo might be our favorite.

Libra
September 23 to October 22

We also love this playful forearm tattoo of the Libra constellation. Check out the expert shading on the planet and moon!

Scorpio
October 23 to November 21

When placed under a black light, this Scorpio constellation actually lights up — talk about executing the concept.

Sagittarius
November 22 to December 21

Considering a wrist tattoo? Here's a simple, but impactful, take on the Archer sign.

Capricorn
December 22 to January 19

Yep, it's still a constellation tattoo even if you choose not to add any lines. These mismatched stars are whimsical and unique.

Aquarius
January 20 to February 18

Ear tattoos are trending in a major way — which makes sense when you see how cool they look paired next to body jewelry.

Pisces
February 19 to March 20

Two delicate koi fish dancing in perfect tandem to represent Pisces = genius and stunning.

Whether or not we have the Nike SNKRS app, follow all the hypebeasts (and baes) on Instagram, or line up around the block for the latest Yeezy drop, there's undoubtedly a little bit of sneakerhead in all of us. Because whether you have four pairs or 40, a love of sneakers is something most people can agree on.

Looking ahead to next year, we've already seen some trends start to pop up that are sure to be big in 2018. From statement-making glitter and all-over patterns to super-retro throwback styles, we have a feeling your closet is soon going to be filled with kicks you just can't ignore. So if you're looking for shoes that'll help your #OOTD hit 1,000 likes on the 'gram or just want an easy-to-wear pair on the weekends, we're predicting the 11 styles ahead are going to be It in the New Year. Here's to watching the hype build as their popularity unfolds.

The All-Over Pattern
We're used to seeing patterned sneakers, but it's taken to the next-level when the sole is included, like in the latest Vans drop at Opening Ceremony. We like where this is going...

Photo via @openingceremony.

Glitter, Glitter, And More Glitter
Between the J.W. Anderson x Converse collaboration and the Vans x Opening Ceremony ones, it seems the best sneaker brands are going head-to-head for who can make the sparkliest shoe. Glittermania is alive and well.

Photo via @converse.

The Air Max 97 (Still)
No shoe had a bigger comeback in 2017 than the 97, and we're willing to put money on the fact that it's not going anywhere. If anything, we expect it to go even more into the mainstream.

Photo via @ohkworld.

Balenciaga Colorblocking
The sneaker you've been seeing on every blogger is sure to be knocked-off in 2018 — in fact, we've already seen some close encounters.

Photo via @pernilleteisbaek.

Never Enough Pinks
The pink sneaker is becoming just as much of a staple as the white sneaker, if you ask us.

Photo via @girlonkicks.

Macaron Pastels
Aside from just pink, we're betting on dusty blues and minty greens to continue to dominate (and maybe even the color of the year, purple!).

Photo via @monicanoz.

Rainbow Brights
Whether just stripes down the side or heel, or a full-on rainbow wave like the Sean Wotherspoon drop that sent the Internet into a frenzy this year, we see a lot of rainbow sneakers in your future.

Photo via @jiandeleon.

Orthopedic In A Good Way
Acne Studios, Fila, Balenciaga, Eytys... These brands are taking over with chunky sneakers that rival your grandpa's.

Photo via @oursecondskin.

That '70s Show
Throwback hues like mustard yellows and burnt oranges compliment these retro styles perfectly.

Photo via @golaclassics.

The Gum Sole
It may not be for everyone, but we see this throwback detail picking up major steam in the New Year.

On New Year's Eve, The Founder Of The #MeToo Movement Brought These Survivors On Stage With Her

$

#MeToo movement founder, Tarana Burke, made news as she rang in the new year on stage in Times Square. Burke had the honor of pushing the button for the ball drop, which she stated was a "fitting way to honor the Me Too movement as we close a historic year and set our intentions for 2018."

But viewers took note that Burke wasn't alone on stage this New Year's Eve. Burke took to Twitter to highlight the women that joined her in honoring the #MeToo movement.

In her statement, Burke wrote, "...Tonight's monumental occasion is underscored for me by the presence of two guests: Jenny Lumet, who published a powerful piece in the Hollywood Reporter detailing her experience with Russell Simmons and Jerhonda Pace who broke her non-disclosure agreement to expose the depravity that she experienced at the hands of Robert 'R' Kelly. In the year when 'Silence Breakers' were celebrated for their bravery and vulnerability, these two women were outstanding examples of both. Both of them stood up and said 'me, too' in ways that resonated deeply in communities of color, representing women all too often drowned out by the din of privileged voices."

The importance of Lumet and Pace joining Burke on stage is momentous for the #MeToo movement and for highlighting the significance of uplifting marginalized communities. Women of color have been erased from the larger conversation of sexual misconduct, though recognizing Burke and her work with #MeToo is a push in the right direction.

In the New Year, as we commit to doing our part in dismantling injustice such as sexual misconduct, we must do the difficult work of recentering marginalized communities and their importance. Burke, Lumet, and Pace are three women who have done incredible work for dismantling sexual misconduct, but there are still many who are pushed aside and forgotten from the larger movement. We must change that.

There's no better way to bring in the new year than by highlighting the work that women of color, like Burke, have done.

Barack Obama's Favorite Songs Of 2017 Are A Litmus Test — For Us

$
0
0

Continuing the tradition from his presidency, Barack Obama shared the songs he loved in 2017 on Facebook and hot damn; it's a fire playlist.

There are pop faves that defined the year, like DJ Khaled and Rihanna's "Wild Thoughts," Camila Cabello's "Havana," and Portugal. The Man's "Feel It Still." There are meaningful, impactful, uplifting tracks by queens of soul, including Andra Day's "Rise Up," "Matter of Time" from Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, and "Little Bit" by Mavis Staples. Of course, there is dad rock from U2, The National, Bruce Springsteen (naturally, he's already been to see that one-man show on Broadway because he can get impossible to get tickets still), and Harry Styles (sorry, Styles stans). There are tracks I totally missed and tracks from 2017 faves (major shout out to SZA!).

And, most notably, there is a message behind nearly every track. Know this: the man likes songs with layers. He doesn't shy away from political songs, like Chance the Rapper's excellent "First World Problems," which, in under five minutes, addresses religion, fatherhood, violence in Chicago, access to clean water, gay rights, economic inequality, and civil rights. Or, put succinctly: human rights.

Daniel Caesar, who sings with Chance in The Late Show clip above, also has a track of his own on Obama's list with "Blessed." It's a song about homecoming, and about being in a relationship that's imperfect but loving. Frankly, it's the kind of song I want to imagine Barack and Michelle slow dancing to. There are several songs like that on his list, songs I want to imagine speaking for him. Brandi Carlile's "The Joke" must be a rebuff to the forces that worked against him while he was president, the haters who said he'd never pass the ACA and wanted to see his birth certificate — right?

It's easy to imagine him identifying with Kendrick Lamar's "Humble," maybe even making it the song he started his days with for a time. But Frank Ocean's "Chanel" could be that song too, depending on the state of the world and what's in the headlines on any given day. Jay Z's "Family Feud," with a video that just set the tone for inclusiveness in America for 2018, has to be his theme song right now, don't you think?

The truth is, now that he's not in the public eye, now that he's left office, our view of Obama's day-to-day life is more limited. That makes it easy to imagine we see his relationship to any of these tracks clearly because it feels like he's someone we know well. But realistically, there is no way to take his music picks, but on their face, simply as songs he liked.

One thing we can say with certainty: Obama is the only living former president who would have this much hip hop, rap, and music by POC on his radar. I guarantee you that both Bushes, Clinton, and Carter haven't even heard of half the people on this list, let alone listened to these songs. If they did, it's doubtful they'd be able to connect with them. That is another thing about him that makes Obama feel like ours; like someone who understands our generation, our values, and our way of speaking. Music is a great connector, not appreciating the poetry of Kendrick (or Chance, or Rihanna) is one of those things about the current administration that makes them feel even further away from where we are. Music is a language that matters, and Obama's playlist hammers that point home for everyone who looked at it and thought, That's my president.

See Obama's whole playlist below and, yes, it does make a great Spotify/YouTube playlist as it is listed out — it's already well sequenced, no need to tweak it.

Supreme Court To Review Sexual Harassment Protections For Court Employees

$

On December 31st, Chief Justice John G. Roberts, Jr. announced that the Supreme Court will be tackling sexual harassment. The initiative, as Justice Roberts writes, will focus on protecting law clerks and other court employees from sexual harassment. He notes that even the federal judiciary isn't immune to the issue.

As the Washington Post reports, the announcement of the initiative came in Roberts' 2017 State of the Judiciary Report. He wrote: "The judiciary will begin 2018 by undertaking a careful evaluation of whether its standards of conduct and its procedures for investigating and correcting inappropriate behavior are adequate to ensure an exemplary workplace for every judge and every court employee." He especially noted the significance of taking a stand against sexual harassment in the workplace.

James Duff, director of the Administrative Office of U.S. Courts, was directed by Roberts to direct a working group charged with examining the issues within the judicial branch. Nearly 700 former and current court employees showed their support by requesting action, suggesting that these issues should be highlighted in his annual judiciary report.

The initiative will examine if changes would need to be made to the code of conduct, guidance given to employees such as law clerks, educational programs and investigative processes for sexual misconduct cases. But this change is welcome to the judicial system, in ensuring that it upholds safety for the most vulnerable employees.

The need for institutional protection and support for sexual misconduct cases is only increasing as sexual harassment becomes a more publicly addressed issue. The change to the judiciary laws that will ensure that could have a ripple effect to other institutions, paving the way for a new outlook on how to handle sexual misconduct issues as they arise, as well as ultimately preventing them.

As we begin the new year, it's reassuring to see people finding new solutions to solving the issue of sexual misconduct and its existence in almost every facet of our lives.

The Best Dr. Pimple Popper Videos Of All Time — If You're Into That

If you delight in watching gooey zits pop and in seeing their nasty insides shoot across the room, take comfort in knowing that you are in the company of millions. And the Internet is totally supportive of your habit, too, providing popping videos in spades. At the forefront of the most gruesome ones is Dr. Sandra Lee (also known as Dr. Pimple Popper), who posts intimate excavation videos of blackheads so big and cysts so goopy, they have to be seen to be believed. With more than 1.8 million extraction videos on YouTube, Dr. Lee’s clips are in fine company.

If you see a “freaking goldmine,” as one commenter posted, where others just see a lump-filled nose — or just can’t look away from never-ending streams of pus that drain from enlarged pores — then hold onto your tweezers, because we’ve assembled the ultimate pimple porn playlist.

Ahead, see the most watched extraction videos of all time, each more intense than the last. And hold onto your lunch, you’re in for a bumpy ride.

Dr. Pimple Popper's most recent (and possibly most sensitive) treatment zone of choice? The eyes. In this video, Dr. Lee goes in on a blackhead-turned-cystic pimple on the outer corner of a patient's eye. Just as she would for any other open comedone, the dermatologist used an aggressively sharp 11-blade extractor to tackle it.

@Dr. Sandra Lee (aka Dr. Pimple Popper)

Suffer from milia? This quick pop video will have you feeling very inspired to finally see your derm to remove those little suckers.

In another clip, the dermatologist slowly squeezes away what appears to be a minefield of blackheads. In reality, Dr.Pimple Popper is using tweezers to remove sebaceous filaments, which are dead skin cells around a hair follicle.

In this video showing a dilated pore of winer extraction (skin congestion that’s often years — and sometimes decades — in the making), Dr. Pimple Popper removes a black mass from the back of a patient’s shoulder that’s about the size of a bullet. Once the mass is removed, the affected area looks like the skin that surrounds a belly button and must be kept agape rather than stitched shut in order to heal properly. Basically, you’ve got to see it to believe it.

The third most popular extraction video doesn’t look like much at first — the patient brandishes a barely-noticeable blackhead that has taken residence on her lip. But then dermatologist Sandra Lee gets her hands on the area and things get real — fast. After an incision is made on the upper lip, the area is held open with tools, and given a little wiggle. Bam! Out pops a mass that Lee affectionately nicknames “a baby river rock.” Um, cute? Three stitches later, the patient is sent packing, a load lighter in the lip.

After watching back-to-back extraction videos, you’ll start to notice a little pattern (if not swear off creamy foods): Many of the clogged pores are located on parts of the body that are tough for the patients to see themselves, like the backside of the body or in crevices of the ears. Sure enough, this patient’s long-neglected blackhead is located on her shoulder blade and once Dr. Lee gets started, another cyst is discovered, taking up connecting space. You’ll have to watch for the all the gory details.

Is the couple that visits the dermatologist together the couple that stays together? In this video, Lee treats a woman who is accompanied by her husband for the appointment. The pair has been married for more than 50 years, but something tells us the partnership has never been tested like this before. When addressing sizable blackheads on the patient's back, a dark brown goo is released, along with the the white muck that comprises the blackhead’s sack. After all is scraped out, the patient’s skin looks much smoother. Have you ever seen a better display of in sickness and in health?

If the first four videos were child's play to you, then try stomaching this bad boy, which uses a medical camera for extreme closeups. In this clip, Dr. Sandra Lee takes her pimple-popping skills to The Doctors studio and addresses a blackhead on the back of a patient’s ear. Thanks to the camera’s closeup, the goo-factor is gnarlier than ever.

A long-suffering patient with a blackhead on his back gets the Dr. Pimple Popper treatment — and the white goop that’s released as a result is pretty astounding. The patient gamely called the process, “a good way to lose weight,” but by our measure, it’s more like a good way to lose our lunch.

How do you find out that a blackhead has set up shop on the backside of your ear? If you’re this woman, it’s via a full-body scan, which detected the shark’s tooth-sized blockage seen in this clip. After cutting away at the back of the ear, Dr. Lee pulled a hardened, black mass from a pocket of skin. “You could smuggle diamonds in here,” the good doctor remarked about the accommodating space within skin. As if that weren't enough must-see TV, the derm goes on to dislodge a few additional blackheads from the patient’s complexion, too.

Some blackheads are so big and deep, that the removal is hard to watch. (Who are we kidding? These are all hard to watch.) While other times, the removal strategy is all about quantity. Here, Dr. Lee has her work cut out for her thanks to the sheer number of blackheads on one individual.

Some people consult a pricey plastic surgeon to re-shape their noses. But this man, who suffers from glandular rosacea (which causes thickening of the skin) experienced a similar effect by having oversized blackheads and whiteheads expunged from his nose. As Dr. Pimple Popper frees pore after pore of excess oil and skin cells (which comes out in gunky, long strings), the man’s nose smooths out and becomes slimmer.

Dr. Pimple Popper told Bustle that this bump on a man's left hip was so large that she thought it was a case of lipoma (a growth of fat cells). Alas, it was just a face-shaped cyst — one that oozed buckets of weird gray liquid when she burst it.

Its official: This video of a cyst popping might have just ruined the unicorn trend for us once and for all.

Think of this video as the adult equivalent of visiting the public pool: Do not eat 30 minutes before pressing play. "The pasty contents are mostly composed of macerated keratin (wet skin cells), which creates this 'cheesy' consistency, and there can be a pungent odor," Dr. Pimple Popper described in the video's caption.

You might want to postpone your brunch plans. Dr. Lee's biggest pop yet (virtually, at least) is this grapefruit-sized growth. Of course, we can't squirm too much, as proceeds from the derm's first pay-per-view-type video goes to Hurricane Harvey victims.

You don't always have to hit up YouTube for your pimple popping fix. Sometimes, Dr. Lee treats her 2.6 million followers (and counting) with snippets on Instagram — like this bursting ear cyst video. Fun fact: Some commenters likened the yellow pus to mustard.

Photo: Via @drpimplepopper.

Another dilated pore of winer extraction to convince you it's time to use that lactic acid serum before it's too late.

In this Instagram video, Dr. Lee extracts a black head embedded deep within scar tissue. Proof that, yes, it's possible, but best left to a professional.

Lengthening

Revlon’s new lengthening mascara has a fiber formula that helps to extend each lash as you glide through them with the brush, yet that exact formula also makes it easy to build on said lashes. The plush blush also helps with volume for super flirty, long lashes.

Revlon Super Length Mascara, $8.99, available at Ulta Beauty.

No 7's brush has three different sides — to make sure every single lash gets some loving.

No7, $8.99, available at Boots

When you really want eyelash extensions, but are too impatient to sit in a chair with your eyes closed for two hours, this new formula from Almay gives lashes the feathered look while fooling everyone into thinking you paid $200. Really, it only cost you $10.

Almay Liquid Lash Extenders Mascara, $8.99, available at Ulta Beauty.

This brand-new dual mascara kit from Physicians Formula is the easiest way to apply false lashes, ever. The set comes with a black lengthening mascara, as well as an “extensions” wand, which is a spoolie for applying false-lash fibers. All you have to do is apply a swipe of black mascara, apply a swipe of your extensions fibers, and then seal it all in with the black mascara. That’s it — and you'll have lashes that look like falsies. Plus, you'll have saved all that time it takes to glue on a strip.

Fun fact: This formula won over one of our editors in a big way.

Physicians Formula Eye Booster Instant Doll Lash Extension Kit, $14.99, available at Ulta Beauty.

L'Oréal's Voluminous Carbon Black mascara is an editor and consumer favorite for a reason: It seriously plumps lashes. The fat brush has hundreds of tiny bristles that grab every hair and coat it with a volumizing formula that layers easily without veering into clumpy or crunchy territories.

What's more, this also just so happens to be one of the mascaras you find most often in celebrity makeup artists' kits.

L'Oréal Voluminous Carbon Black Mascara, $7.99, available at Ulta Beauty.

Demi Lovato’s first makeup line in collaboration with New York Color is certainly a good one – but one of our favorite products is the Lovatics mascara, due to it’s lengthening skills. With a dual-fiber brush and a formula that has both beeswax and carnauba wax to help with volume and length, this mascara is a steal.

Lovatics by Demi Mascara, $4.47, available at Walmart.

Avon's Mega Effects mascara has a unique brush that helps separate each and every lash. The bristles coat and stretch your lashes, making this a clear winner in the lengthening department.

Avon, $10, available at Avon

This formula promises to do give your lashes the same treatment that a stop-them-in-your-tracks pair of Loubs does to your legs.

Maybelline Lash Stiletto Ultimate Length Mascara, $8.99, available at Ulta.

The name says it all. Almay's Get Up & Grow not only lengthens, but its conditioning formula helps strengthen your lashes over time. Not too shabby.

Almay, $6.49, available at Ulta Beauty

Think you can't get much for a dollar? E.L.F.'s mascara will give you long lashes for just a buck.

Waterproof
Maybelline's The Rocket mascara is a classic for a reason. Its densely packed plastic bristles make it super-easy to coat every single lash with a layer of its volumizing formula. Add a little waterproof action into the mix, and your mascara won't be going anywhere — whether you're sweating it up at the gym or trudging through a rainstorm.

Maybelline Volum'Express The Rocket Waterproof Mascara, $7.49, available at Ulta Beauty.

CoverGirl's original Lashblast Volume mascara is one of our favorites. But when we need our makeup to last all day (sans raccoon eyes), we always reach for the waterproof version.

Want to wear mascara to the gym? This one won't run down your face after a 45-minute sweat session.

Avon, $8, available at Avon

There's a reason this tube is a favorite among quite a few of our beauty editors. Coat after coat, you'll never see a single clump.

COVERGIRL, $6.99, available at Target

The secret of L'Oréal Voluminous Butterfly is the butterfly-wing-shaped wand. It combs through each lash for a perfectly even application.

L'Oréal, $8.49, available at Ulta Beauty

All hail Iman and her brand's Volumize Mascara. The bristles lift, separate, and never leave lashes stuck together.

Iman, $9, available at Target

Volumizing
Any mascara with the name Doll Eye has got to give your lashes a serious volume boost, right? And that's just what Nyx's formula does — at a very pretty price.

NYX Cosmetics, $9.99, available at Ulta Beauty

Birds of a feather flock together... and are the inspiration behind CoverGirl's newest lash formula. The fanned-out brush promises to catch, coat, and separate your fringe.

CoverGirl Peacock Flare Mascara, $8.99, available at Ulta.

The whipped formula, which contains coconut extract, helps separate lashes to create are they real? -level volume.

Maybelline Total Temptation Mascara, $9.49, available at Ulta.

This cone-shaped brush helps whip the wimpiest of lashes into glam territory.

Essence Lash Princess False Lash Effect Mascara, $4.99, available at Ulta.

The hourglass-shaped brush helps the fibers in the formula surround each lash to volumize and lengthen.

Physicians Formula Eye Booster Lash Contortionist Mascara, $10.95, available at Walgreens.

The thin, cone-shaped brush on this volumizing mascara makes it easy to coat every single lash. Yes, we mean every lash, from the hard-to-reach inner corners to the teeny bottom lashes.

Essence Forbidden Volume Mascara, $4.49, available at Ulta Beauty.

This two-sided mascara was designed to seriously beef up limp lashes. Use the white, fiber-infused primer as a base, then layer the black mascara over top. Voilà — Hadid-approved lashes.

Maybelline x Gigi Hadid East Coast Glam Fiber Mascara, $12.99, available at Ulta Beauty.

Maybelline, $12.99, available at Ulta Beauty

It’s simple makeup math: One little wand x the human average of 150 eyelashes = the illusion of a million eyelashes.

Revlon, $8.99, available at Ulta Beauty

Those of you who dig clumpy lashes will love Maybelline's Colossal Spider Effect mascara. The unique plastic-bristle brush combs through lashes and deposits hefty amounts of product, which immediately beefs up limp hairs.

Maybelline The Colossal Spider Effect Mascara, $6.99, available at Ulta Beauty.

This lash duo from Honest Beauty helps to create both length and volume at the same time. First, the primer, protects and nourishes the lashes while also intensifying the color. Then, the mascara is able to be applied extra-smooth to appropriately lift and amplify each and every lash.

Honest Beauty Truly Lush Mascara + Lash Primer, $22, available at Honest Beauty.

Circa Beauty’s Absolute Lash Icon Mascara lives up to it’s name – the oversized, bulbous brush helps to mold each lash for extra volume. Plus, the formula has avocado oil in it, enriching the lashes so they won’t clump as you aspire to maximum lash height.

Circa Beauty Absolute Lash Icon Mascara, $12, available at Walgreens.

Consider this mascara a Wonderbra for your lashes. It lifts, separates, and makes every individual lash look bigger.

Essence, $4.99, available at Ulta Beauty

Sure, the thick brush will give you mega-volume. But Organic Wear's gentle formula is especially clutch if you've got sensitive eyes.

Physicians Formula, $9.99, available at CVS

For those of us who adore wet mascaras that are almost too goopy on the wand, this is stuff of magic. Whether you have long or short lashes, this not only volumizes them, but also makes them look darker.

Maybelline Volum' Express The Falsies Mascara, $6.99, available at Ulta Beauty.

Thickening
Haven't tried Great Lash yet? You're missing out. There's a reason this lash-bulking formula is a favorite among pros.

Pro tip: To harness the tried-and-true formula with an added bonus, try the Lots of Lashes version — it has a fatter brush!

Maybelline, $4.44, available at Jet

Mascara primer often feel like an unnecessary step (especially if you're short on time), but a tinted primer that thickens and darkens your lashes is a fast way to skip mascara altogether for a no-makeup makeup look.

Maybelline Volum' Express The Colossal Big Shot Tinted Primer, $8.49, available at Ulta Beauty.

This new mascara will seriously beef up limp lashes thanks to its full, thick brush and volumizing formula.

L'Oréal Paris Lash Paradise Mascara, $9.99, available August 2017 at CVS.

CoverGirl's newest launch is designed with every lash type in mind — but we love it best when going for thickness, thanks to the unique brush shape. The round tip allows the user to get incredibly close to the root of lashes, allowing for more more density.

CoverGirl So Lashy blast Pro Waterproof Mascara, $8.99, available at Target.

Neutrogena's Healthy Volume is made with a touch of olive oil to moisturize your lashes. The result? A thick, gorgeous set all through winter.

Neutrogena, $8.49, available at Neutrogena

This fluffy brush creates fluttering lashes that won't sag or fall throughout the day. Plus, the formula can be layered for serious drama.

Maybelline Lash Sensational Mascara, $8.99, available at Ulta Beauty.

Conditioning
This mascara does such a stellar job of separating and defining lashes, that we would be happy if that were its only trick. But it also contains conditioners geared to help lashes grow, too.

Kiko Milano 30 Days Extension Daily Treatment Mascara, $12, available at Kiko Milano.

We're sure Emma Watson would agree that finding a natural mascara that defines lashes and lasts all day is a challenge. Then, Burt's Bees launched its first full makeup collection and blessed our sensitive eyes with this lightweight formula that perfectly separates and won't smudge in the heat.

Burt's Bees 100% Natural Nourishing Mascara, $12.99, available online only at Ulta Beauty.

15 Things We're Throwing Away With The End Of 2017

It goes without saying that 2017 has been a shit year — one we're very much looking forward to moving past (and not looking back). With hopes for a great 2018, we're leaving as much baggage behind — and that includes letting go some of the clothing and trends that got us through this tumultuous year. Because as weird of a time it was for politics and the state of our country, it was equally as head-scratching, in some cases, for the realm of fashion.

While some pieces, especially those from the latter half of this year, are sure to stick around well into new year, there are some items we're one-hundred percent ready to move past. You know, the ones that have you looking back and asking " Why did I wear that?" To help you better identify those, we've crafted a handy "toss" list for that impending closet clean out — trust us, you won't miss these when they're gone.

Fishnet Tights
We know. We were here for these. But like any true fad, they became oversaturated, quick. And we're ready to give them another rest.

Lace-Up Stuff
Again, when something pops up everywhere, it's time to say farewell.

ALL The Merch
Everyone made merch, sold merch, and bought merch in 2017. Take inventory, and feel free to get rid of the impulse buys collecting dust in your closet.

The Yeezy Aesthetic
Sorry, Kim Kardashian, but nude leggings aren't really our thing.

Chokers
The '90s resurgence was real this year. And while we will gladly take mom jeans in 2018, let's leave chokers in the past.

Off-The-Shoulder Mania
Ah, the silhouette of the summer. There are other (more interesting!) ways to show skin aside from an off-shoulder shirt, we promise.

Anything Not High-Waisted
We just don't have time for low-rises anymore.

Those Cut-Out T-Shirts The Jenners Wore
Let's be real: They never should have happened.

Neck Scarves
There once was a time no outfit was complete without a neck scarf. That time is now over.

Rose Gold Everything
Rose quartz was the color of the year...in 2016.

Overalls
Gretchen, stop trying to make overalls happen.

Peep-Toe Boots
Because your big toe doesn't need that much attention.

The Excessive Product Collaborations
Did anyone not do a Star Wars collection this year?

A-Line Skirts
This silhouette is stuck in the early-aughts, and there's been so many better cuts since then.

Frayed Jeans
Sorry, petite gals. We know this isn't the news you want to hear, but we're betting frayed denim is on its way out.

End Blackheads With These Genius Skin Tricks

Illustrated by Anna Sudit.

You've seen the YouTube tutorials (google "Blackhead Removal SHOCKING Video" — or don’t), the DIY facial-scrub recipes, and yes, even the little black dots all over your nose in your 10x magnifying mirror. Blackheads are exceedingly common. But, why are they so irksome?

"I think it's partly because they feel rough to the surface," says Doris J. Day, MD, a New York City-based dermatologist and author of 100 Questions & Answers About Acne. "There's the idea that blackheads are stuck in your skin — and if you remove them, there's a sense of gratification and relief that they're gone. Blackheads just seem so manageable in that way: You just get them out, and then you're done."

That perception couldn't be further from the truth. Getting rid of blackheads — for good — is a process that requires the right products (hello, salicylic acid), a regular skin-care regimen, and sometimes even the help of pros. Ahead, we spoke to Dr. Day about her most effective tricks.

Read these stories next:
The Best Way To Get Rid Of Acne Scars
This Serum Seriously Reduces Acne & Acne Scars
This Combo Is The Secret To My Best Skin Ever

Know Thy Enemy
The first step in treating blackheads is truly understanding them. Basically, a blackhead is a pore that's clogged with a mixture of dead skin cells, oil, and Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) — a bacteria that thrives on the protein and oil in your pores and causes breakouts. Unlike a whitehead (a closed comedo), a blackhead is open at the skin's surface (an open comedo). Exposure to air causes this plug of gunk to oxidize and turn black, making it really tempting to mess with.

When you finally get one out, the feeling is insanely gratifying. (Case in point: Dr. Pimple Popper.) You just need to know how to do it properly.

Illustrated by Anna Sudit.

Slather On Salicylic Acid
When it comes to blackhead removal, salicylic acid is your best friend. Commonly found in over-the-counter acne treatments, the ingredient gently helps skin-cell turnover, helping unclog your pores. The best way to use it is by layering it on once or twice a day, in concentrations between .5 and 2%. Start with a face wash like Neutrogena's Oil-Free Acne Wash or Olay Fresh Effects Acne Control Face Wash. (If you’re a lazy, face-wipes kind of lady, try Yes to Tomatoes Blemish Clearing Facial Wipes.) Then, apply a spot treatment, like Clean & Clear Advantage Acne Spot Treatment or a medicated tinted moisturizer, like Aveeno Clear Complexion BB Cream.

Illustrated by Anna Sudit.

The longer this stuff sits on your face, the more time it has to work. Just be careful not to overdo it — vary your concentrations (not every product in your regimen should contain 2% salicylic, the highest OTC percentage), and be mindful of your skin's sensitivity. If your skin becomes overly dry, tight, or irritated, cut back on the concentration, the number of products in your regimen, or the frequency of application. "People can be too aggressive with salicylic acid and irritate their skin," says Dr. Day. "Understand that it takes time for everything to work, so give it a few days to a week in order to really have the full benefit."

Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Wash Pink Grapefruit Facial Cleanser, $6.82, available at Target.

But if you’re more of a lazy, face-wipes type of person, try these potent acne-fighting ones.

Yes to Tomatoes Blemish Clearing Facial Wipes, $4.49, available at Walgreens.

Learn What Doesn't Work
If you're thinking of using benzoyl peroxide here, well, just don't. While benzoyl can nuke zits quickly, salicylic is a better blackhead remedy because it helps exfoliate and unclog your pores. Benzoyl is mainly a bactericide that’s used to kill the P. acnes bacteria. This is less of a concern with blackheads, since they’re open at the surface — and contact with air kills the anaerobic bacteria.

Other stuff that doesn't help banish blackheads? "People will put things like hydrogen peroxide or rubbing alcohol on their skin," says Dr. Day. "Those have zero effect on the bacteria that causes acne, and won't help blackheads or whiteheads, but they will dry out your skin. Hydrogen peroxide, if you use it too much, is actually toxic to collagen in skin cells, so it will harm your skin."

Clean & Clear Advantage Acne Spot Treatment, $6.36, available at Ulta Beauty.

Exfoliate Gently — & Whichever Way You Like
Exfoliating regularly is key to keeping blackheads in check, since it scrubs away dead skin cells that could clog pores. "It's fine to alternate between manual and chemical exfoliants,” says Dr. Day. “The main thing is, don't over-scrub — you don't want to strip your skin. See what your skin likes and what you like. There are so many good choices."

Illustrated by Anna Sudit.

We like applying Garnier Clean + Blackhead Eliminating Scrub once or twice a week — any more than that is overkill — for an extra boost of exfoliation.

Garnier Clean + Blackhead Eliminating Scrub, $7.99, available at Garnier.

Juice Beauty Green Apple Blemish Clearing Peel does the job and also helps eliminate acne scars.

Juice Beauty Green Apple Blemish Clearing Peel, $39, available at Juice Beauty.

We know clay products are key for purging pores, but this formula works overtime to remove blackheads in 10 minutes. Better yet, it combines white clay with salicylic acid, so blackheads are loosened as you massage, then they disappear. (Really!)

Philosophy Purity Made Simple Pore Extractor Mask, $35, available at Sephora.

Concerned about chemicals? This scrub has all natural sea kelp and lemon peel... good for you and helps your skin glowing, too.

Acure Organics Brightening Facial Scrub, $9.99, available at Target.

Get Thyself A Skin Brush
If you needed justification for splurging on a Clarisonic, this is your moment. Washing your face with a mechanical skin brush will help fight the good fight against blackheads — not only because it’s essentially a powered-up way to exfoliate, but also because the deep cleanse allows active ingredients to better penetrate your skin, making them, well, more active. "I think they're fantastic," says Dr. Day. "They're much better than using your hands or a washcloth, both in preventing and treating blackheads.”

But, not all brushes are created equal. (Dr. Day swears by the Clarisonic and its Deep Pore Cleansing Brush Heads, and the Olay ProX Microdermabrasion kit.) The more times a second the brush head moves, the less abrasive it will be (which is what you want). P.S. Make sure to keep your brush heads clean, and replace them often.

Clarisonic Mia 2, $169, available at Clarisonic; Clarisonic Deep Pore Cleansing Brush Head, $27, available at Ulta Beauty.

Take Off Your Makeup, For Crying Out Loud
While one night of passing out with your makeup on won't result in a blackhead invasion, over time, this bad habit will absolutely contribute to gunked-up pores. If you can, wash your face as soon as you walk in the door.

If you just can't deal with sudsing up after a long day, cleansing cloths will do, says Dr. Day. Keep a stash of them next to your bed. And, for heaven's sake, stop feeling up your face. Being all touchy-feely can transfer bacteria to your pores and — you guessed it — trigger blackheads and breakouts.

Yes To Coconut Cleansing Wipes, $5.79, available at Walgreens.

Similar to the Makeup Eraser, this fuzzy, washable pad removes waterproof mascara so stubborn you thought you were going to have to attend your funeral with it. Even our editors couldn't believe it wasn't a total gimmick — calling it a ShamWow for your face.

Face Halo, $22, available at Face Halo.

Moisture, Moisture, Moisture
Dry, flaky skin is the enemy here, so moisturizing is non-negotiable. As with all skin-care products, look out for non-comedogenic, non-acnegenic formulas, which have been tested and proven not to clog pores and cause breakouts. (Oil-free is good, too, says Dr. Day, but not as important as those two.)

Illustrated by Anna Sudit.

Avoid occlusive products, like petrolatum and silicones, which contain heavy-duty ingredients that create a moisture barrier. By sealing in moisture, they also trap dead skin cells, oil, and bacteria — which will only cause more blackheads.

CeraVe Facial Moisturizing Lotion PM, $13.99, available at Ulta Beauty.

Try Retinol Or A Retinoid
Over-the-counter retinol products and stronger, prescription retinoids (like Retin-A) are usually associated with anti-aging benefits, but they should also be recognized for their blackhead-busting properties, says Dr. Day. "These products will keep your skin cells turning over efficiently, without over-stripping," she says. "Having good, healthy skin will help you minimize blackheads. It's an ongoing thing."

Illustrated by Anna Sudit.

Start off using a gentle OTC formula, like RoC Retinol Correxion Sensitive Night Cream, a few times a week to avoid irritation and dryness, then switch to every night when your skin is fully adjusted. Stick with the treatment for at least three months to really see results in the form of clearer tone and smoother texture.

Roc Retinol Correxion Sensitive Night Cream, $22.99, available at Ulta Beauty.

Pass The Pore Strips
Undoubtedly, there’s something weirdly gratifying about yanking all the crap out of your nose with a Bioré strip. Limit usage of these curiosities to once a week, says Dr. Day, who totally gets the odd appeal. "I prefer other methods over pore strips, but it is kind of fun the first time you do it, and you see stuff coming out." Skip the strips if you have a sunburn, breakout, or excessively sensitive skin.

Illustrated by Anna Sudit.

While they won't prevent blackheads, these sticky suckers can pull out some of the sebum.

Bioré Deep Cleansing Pore Strips, $7.99, available at Target.

The tea tree extract and kaolin clay in these strips pull out sebum, making pores appear smaller — talk about a win-win!

Formula 10.0.6 Down To The Pores, $5.99, available at Ulta Beauty.

Clay, charcoal, and salicylic-acid face masks are a great alternative to strips. Just follow the directions closely, and if anything, keep it on for less, not more, than the recommended time, Dr. Day says. But the one thing derms warn against? Blackhead removal tools. There's a high risk of pressing down too hard and tearing the skin, so it's best to leave extraction to the pros.

Boots Botanics Ionic Shine Away Clay Mask, $9.39, available at Target.

Ditch The DIY Treatments
Tax returns. Highlights. Pizza. Some things — blackhead treatment included — are best left to the professionals. As tempting as it may be to become the Barefoot Contessa of comedones, there are better ways to get rid of blackheads than with your DIY concoction of whatever the Internets has served up. (Likely, a combo of salt, sugar, honey, olive and/or coconut oil, and lemon juice.)

Illustrated by Anna Sudit.

Skin-care companies have spent billions researching and developing blackhead remedies, so there's no reason to resort to a recipe you've found on a random blog. Dr. Day agrees: "Honestly, when it comes to blackheads, there are so many really great, inexpensive products in the drugstore that DIY just doesn't make sense. These products have been tested on skin, and will get you so much further for the same price, or less, than the DIY ingredients."

Dr. Brandt PoreDermabrasion Pore Perfecting Exfoliator, $58, available at Sephora.

Make A Date With Your Derm
There's something about blackheads that screams, "Squeeze me." Before you do this at home — or pay a facialist good money to do it — and potentially cause inflammation or scarring, consult a dermatologist. Your derm can prescribe retinoids or chemical peels that may boost your results, recommend the best facialists in your city, or, if need be, kick your treatment regimen up a notch with Isolaz, a multi-session, in-office treatment that combines gentle pore suctioning with light therapy. Typically, Isolaz patients need a series of about five sessions, but can see significant results as soon as their first treatment.

You once needed an actual prescription to get your hands on this prescription-strength retinoid, but it’s now available over-the-counter — for less than the cost of your insurance copay.

The Best Of New York Nail Salons

We don’t mean to brag, but New York City is the birthplace of a very important institution: the nail salon. Back in 1878, one particularly entrepreneurial woman opened Mrs. Pray's Manicure, the country’s first parlor for the treatment, filing, and buffing of nails. (Actual lacquer, as we know it, wasn’t invented for a few more decades.)

These days, our fair city is home to more than a thousand nail salons. And while we can appreciate giving ourselves a good DIY mani while binge-watching OITNB, let’s be honest: Nail care is one beauty ritual that we’re more than happy to outsource.

So, we’ve handpicked 26 of the city’s absolute best places for a manicure/pedicure, from nail-art galleries to affordable spots that won’t make you fear a staph infection. (Always a plus, in our book.) Read on for the polish palaces we swear by — and be sure to let us know about your go-tos, too.

Sundays Nail Studio

Juxtaposing the industrial architecture of New York, this Flatiron nail studio brings a down-to-earth vibe to the typical NYC salon. Somewhere between Southern California and Scandinavian style, the hidden gem is a minimalist's oasis — and not just because of the earthy interior design.

Founder Amy Ling Lin was determined to create a studio that provided safer nail care for clients without all the frills, but packed with plenty of the wellness benefits. Besides her own nail polish line (called Sundays, of course) — which is non-toxic, cruelty free, and vegan — Lin's salon also offers guided meditation manicures for anyone looking for some R&R from the busy city.

Sisters Yumiko and Fumiko Kano have a long history of successful nail salons. The duo owned three spots in Japan before launching stateside, where they opened their first spa on the Upper East Side in 2007. Next came their serene Lower East Side haunt, which boasts a relaxing, sophisticated interior and a meticulous staff.

Sweet Lily's nail philosophy is consciousness. The spa actively avoids the use of harsh chemicals, instead opting for safe, natural, yet still effective products. All of the hand and foot exfoliants are made on site, and the spa exclusively uses Zoya polishes, which are free of formaldehyde, DBP, toluene, or camphor. Treat yourself both vanity-wise and health-wise.

A nail empire in the making, this Tokyo-based nail studio has locations in Los Angeles, Korea, Japan, and — lucky for us — Manhattan. Although its selection of regular polishes is somewhat limited, Marie Nails excels when it comes to Calgel. Head to the no frills basement studio, where nail techs will meticulously create solid colors, intricate designs, and everything in-between.

The spot is known for its luxe add-ons, like a flower-petal foot soak, to give you a seriously relaxing spa experience.

Hortūs Nailworks
An appointment for one of this LES newcomer's (formerly, Lushlife Nailworks) totally indulgent and blissfully affordable manicure or pedicure treatments will have you feeling like you just came back from one of those spa retreats Gisele gets to take. Listen to smooth jazz, sip cocktails during Hortūs Happy Hour (11 a.m. - 4 p.m., Monday through Wednesday), and talk it out with Jane, the owner, who might be one of the sweetest people we know.

Essie Flagship Salon
Situated inside Samuel Shriqui is nail legend Essie Weingarten's first-ever salon. Choose from over 300 of the brand's iconic shades (everything from Ballet Slippers to Mint Candy Apple) and sink into one of the oversized, lush leather chairs, which are just as colorful as the polish itself. It's a designer home for a household beauty name.

Bed Of Nails
Harlem’s newest nail salon is arguably the neighborhood’s most posh; owner Candice Idehen, who’s tended to models’ nails at global fashion weeks, has stocked her spot with premium lacquers from the likes of Chanel, Deborah Lippmann, Tom Ford, and essie. When she’s not on set for magazines such as Bazaar and Vogue, Idehen still takes appointments at her salon. It might not be a bad idea to become one of her regulars before word gets out.

Paintbox
So, maybe you’re interested in nail art, but you don’t want your thumbnails to have 3D dinosaurs playing ping-pong while a Precious Moments kitten pounces on your pinky. That’s where Paintbox comes in. The spacious studio features a menu of chic seasonal designs — for summer, think negative-space manicures in hypersaturated hues — all dreamed up by celebrity manicurist Julie Kandalec. A host of smart touches (complimentary beverages, iPhone charging stations) has quickly placed this newcomer among the city’s best beautifiers.

Primp & Polish
No, this isn’t the cheapest spot in Brooklyn, and we’re not crazy about having to pay $4 more for Dior or Chanel lacquer. But, we’re letting that go because of these three words: outdoor pedicure garden. There, you and a gaggle of your best buds can stretch out while your feet are massaged, your hangnails are removed, and your toenails are painted to a glossy shine. No need to worry about inclement weather, either — the patio is covered, so your crew can get groomed come rain, shine, or whatever crazy stuff Mother Nature throws at us next.

Primp & Polish, 172 Bedford Avenue (between North 7th and North 8th), Brooklyn; 718-384-3555.

Vanity Projects
It’s not a gallery, exactly, yet this space is so much more than a nail salon. Here, founder Rita de Alencar Pinto fuses two of her professional interests — fine-art curation and nail art — into a high-concept mani/pedi studio. Video-art installations play on the walls, while the “residency” calendar features a rotating roster of well-known nail artists such as Masako Sasaki and Jessica Washick.

Vanity Projects, 99 Chrystie Street, 2F (between Grand and Hester); 646-410-2928.

[Editor's Note: According to de Alencar Pinto, Vanity Projects' guest artists are all part-time employees and paid on "a very handsome" commission structure.]

Valley Nails
Dream it up, and chances are good that Valley can make it happen on your nails. Since 2006, this downtown salon has been decorating digits with everything from Degas to Warhol, The Hunger Games to Grumpy Cat — and, if you bring in an inspiration photo, your manicurist will translate it to your nails. On a budget? Each manicure comes with a complimentary design on one or two accent nails, so nobody has to go without a little razzle-dazzle.

Valley Nails, 198 Elizabeth St. (between Prince and Spring); 212-274-8985.

Tenoverten
Better show up 10 minutes early for your mani/pedi — you’ll want the extra time to pore over Tenoverten’s massive selection of polish colors. Along with its excellent house brand of five-free lacquers, the sunny salon has the latest hues from the likes of RGB, NARS, essie, and Dior. As for the services themselves, the cheerful technicians and their obsession with cleanliness are top-notch. Color us impressed.

Tenoverten, 132 West Houston (between Macdougal and Sullivan); 917-475-1000.

J. Sisters
You may have heard of J. Sisters as the "pioneers of Brazilian bikini waxing in the United States." Their expertise goes far beyond the panty-line, however; they approach mani/pedis the way detectives tackle crime scenes, and this is no country for callouses and hang nails. Seriously, these Brazilian beauticians will handle your New York nails, nasty or not.

J. Sisters, 41 West 57th Street (between 5th and 6th); 212- 750-2485.

Van Court Studio
Looking for something natural and chic downtown? NYC's latest non-toxic spa is for you. All of Van Court's polish options are 5-, 7-, or 9-free (think: LVX, Floss Gloss, Deborah Lippmann, and more) and its creams and oils are natural and often organic. Did we mention that you can book online? We're sold.

Akiko Nails
Into intricate nail art? Look no further than this LES nail shop. Here, nail artists borrow Japanese techniques to create, well, anything you want. Not feeling so inspired? No problem, you can check out the gallery here or simply brainstorm with your technician, as the shop specializes in hundreds of designs.

Local Honey
This Brooklyn salon does it all — nails, lash extensions, brows, waxing, and more — making it a one-stop shop for all things beauty in Bushwick. Your options are unlimited, from nail art to a "party nail" to accent your paint job to a simple "quicky" manicure or pedicure. Bonus? The prices are super competitive. Translation: Go!

Local Honey, 53 Irving Ave. (at Troutman St.); 347-404-6139.

Pau Hana
If you still think of everything south of Williamsburg as a no man's land, then avail yourself of this teeny-tiny nail salon in one of Brooklyn's most charming neighborhoods. The Hawaiian-themed decor is kitschy in the best way, and they have numerous organic polish options on offer, as well as your Essie and OPI favorites. Just be sure to book a chair well in advance — walk-ins are accepted, but the seats fill up fast.

Pau Hana, 235 Court St. (at Baltic St.); 347-223-4224.

ph7

If you're a Manhattanite, trekking to Brooklyn might not seem like a journey worth the travel — except maybe for ph7. The tiny salon is decked out in minimal decor, packed with non-toxic nail polish from floor to ceiling, and stocked with organic herbal tea. The salon boasts a mission statement that includes eco-friendly services, organic essential oil hand massages, and handcrafted wood furniture that looks like something Aidan Shaw made on SATC — with low-key vibes to match. A gel manicure won't cost you more than $45 and walk-ins are totally okay (although appointments are appreciated).

Is Your State One Of The 18 That Just Raised The Minimum Wage?

2018 brought some good news for minimum wage workers across the country: According to the Labor Law Center, 18 states raised their minimum wage between December 31 and January 1.

Some of the states are Arizona, California, Colorado, Maine, New York, and Washington, which are in the process of a gradual wages increase that will eventually get to a total of either $12 or $15 per hour.

The federal minimum wage has remained stagnant at $7.25 per hour since 2009, but as of now there are 29 states with laws mandating higher pay than that. Recent data shows that by 2024 workers will need at least a $15 per hour minimum wage in order to cover basic living expenses.

Wage increases like the ones we just saw benefit everyone, but particularly women, who represent about two-thirds of all minimum wage workers in the country. (In some states, such as North Dakota and Alabama, they make up three-quarters of those workers.)

"Workers across the country are now starting to see the pay increases they’ve been winning through the Fight for $15," Christine Owens, executive director of the National Employment Law Project, said in a statement. "These big raises offer hope for workers – and are inspiring more states and cities to push for big raises for workers at the bottom."

Ahead, a look at the states that just raised their minimum wage rate.

The Best Way To Get Rid Of Acne Scars

$

This isn't news to anyone, but I feel it bears repeating: Acne scars suck. Anyone who has suffered from post-pimple hyperpigmentation knows this truth to be self-evident. And, post-puberty, they affect every age and skin color. They manifest as red or brown marks that can last weeks — and sometimes, for the really unlucky, months. As someone from that unlucky category, I can confidently tell you that I have tried every — and I mean every — remedy known to man.

I'm also a realist: I know the only permanent ways to eradicate this woe immediately are lasers and Retin-A. But those options continue to be out of reach for the majority of those who are afflicted with this stupid, infuriating skin condition. (What? I'm not bitter.)

That said, quite a few at-home, non-prescription products do a damn good job of fading those marks faster, to get you back to the even-toned complexion you had before that massive breakout. And, for the most part, they don't cost an arm and a leg. As anyone who has spent hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars over the years in a fruitless effort to win the war on zits knows, that's a huge selling point. While these products, for the most part, have no real effect on actually preventing blemishes, we know that fading those dark marks is half the battle.

Ahead, check out each tested scar lighteners that are the everyday heroes of our beauty arsenal. And, if I missed any, let me know in the comments what you swear by. Knowledge is power.

When you hear the word "toner" you might not automatically assume it's a powerful, acne scar fighter — but it is. This one from Fresh is infused with a peony extract, vitamin C, and licorice root extract that visibly brightens, plumps, and leaves lasting hydration.

Fresh Peony Brightening Moisturizing Facial Toner, $60, available at Fresh.

The retinol in this night oil will help reduce the visibility of your dark spots over time while also working to help erase the acne you've already got.

Sunday Riley Luna Sleeping Night Oil, $105, available at Sephora.

Ignore the name; this isn't a skin-bleaching product. But, the kojic acid and licorice root in this mask do fade acne scars and age spots in record time.

Mario Badescu Whitening Mask, $24, available at Mario Badescu.

This one comes with a hefty price tag, but it's well worth the money. The serum targets spots fast and leaves your face with an immediate glow.

Shiseido White Lucent MicroTargeting Spot Corrector, $130, available at Shiseido.

This serum is one of our favorite tools to battle acne scars. It targets dark spots, but doesn't change your natural skin tone in any way. It's a great nighttime moisturizer, but you can use it in both the a.m. and p.m. — just remember to use sunscreen during the day.

Clarins Mission Perfection Serum, $72, available at Nordstrom.

Products labeled as "brightening" sometimes get a bad rap. But they're the best mode of treatment for pesky acne scars. This mask from GlamGlow isn't necessarily one you should use every day, but you can whip it out weekly in addition to other healing treatments.

GlamGlow Flashmud Brightening Treatment, $69, available at Sephora.

One of the big issues with acne-scar treatments is that you have to do some serious sleuthing to find the right products — very few brands mention "acne scars" on their labels. Most use ambiguous descriptions and names that hint at brightening, evening the skin tone, or addressing hyperpigmentation.

One of the few exceptions is this straight-to-the-point tube from Clean & Clear. It uses a known acne-fighting ingredient — salicylic acid — to help treat pimples and lessen post-breakout marks. A two-for-one deal, for the price of a coffee and a croissant from that fancy spot down the block — you can't beat that.

Clean & Clear Advantage Mark Treatment, $7.06, available at Walmart.

This cult classic proudly boasts on its box that it can diminish scars, stretch marks, and uneven skin tone, as well as signs of aging and dehydrated skin. Pretty lofty claims to live up to.

While I can't personally attest to the whole stretch-marks thing — which is what it's best known for — I can tell you it's one of the most effective hyperpigmentation healers on the market. Ignore the '70s packaging, because cheesy as it may look this stuff is more effective than many products twice its price tag.

Bio-Oil Specialist Skincare, $15.99, available at Target.

Okay, okay: This one is on the pricier end of the spectrum. However, it's one of the few products that I think is worthy of its $100 price tag. Again, not the most obvious scar treatment — but "illuminating" and "skin-perfecting" are just fancy marketing terms that mean it treats bumpy, blotchy, marked-up skin.

I particularly like how soft it makes my skin feel, as well as the pleasant, subtle scent of rose — not at all overwhelming or perfume-y. I use it at night and wake up to what those marketers would call glowy, dewy, perfected skin.

By Terry Cellularose Brightening Serum, $117, available at SpaceNK.

Hydroquinone is effective at fading dark scars and other post-breakout marks. It's a common active ingredient in skin-lightening formulas, including this gel from derm-created line Murad.

A few things to know: Apply it to just the affected area (or it could lighten the rest of your complexion, too) after washing your face and before applying your moisturizer. Also, most derms will warn you about "rebound pigmentation" when using hydroquinone, which means that if you use it for too long (more than six weeks is a common estimate) it could start making the area darker instead of lighter. Stick to a six-week run on each scar for the best results — and always wear SPF!

Murad Post-Acne Spot Lightening Gel, $65, available at Sephora.

This acne spot-fading gel from Renée Rouleau is another one of those "says what it does" treatments. It won't work on existing zits, but it's specifically formulated for post-breakout skin — which means you know exactly when and how to use it. And when it comes to a problem people in the industry don't really address, a product like this is a big relief for the millions of us who deal with the issue on a day-to-day basis.

Renée Rouleau Post-Breakout Fading Gel, $38.50, available at Renée Rouleau.

This Kiehl's dark-spot corrector is a super-light serum that helps to both zap acne scars and even out your skin tone. It uses activated vitamin C, which has been proven to combat discoloration effortlessly.

Kiehl's Clearly Corrective Dark Spot Solution, $49.50, available at Kiehl's.

I've written the beauty equivalent of a Jane Austen romance about this sheet mask. I can't stop shouting its name from the rooftops, because it is that crazy-good.

What makes it so special is that it provides instant relief. Slap on this sucker for 20 minutes before bedtime, then remove it. Let the serum sink in, then fish around in the packet for some extra serum and press that into the skin for a double layer of goodness. Your marks will look much less prominent after you initially remove the mask, but I've found that the next morning you'll see an even more amazing skin transformation.

If I'm feeling thrifty (read: always), I'll save the leftover serum and use it the next evening and the subsequent few evenings, depending on how long it lasts. If you're feeling REALLY crafty, you can also save that excess serum to make another mask by applying it to the skin and then layering peeled-apart cotton pads on top — like so. Talk about getting your money's worth.

Talika Purifying Bio Enzymes Mask, $12 for 1, available at DermStore.

SkinCeuticals has a long, storied history of creating science-based formulas that kick major ass at preventing, protecting, and repairing the skin. This lighter texture of a cult-favorite product straddles all three of those categories by protecting against free radicals, evening out the skin tone, firming your complexion, and diminishing both dullness and dark spots.

Another interesting tidbit: According to the brand, once it sinks in, you can't wash or rub it off for at least 72 hours. It definitely falls into the super-duper long-wear category, that's for sure.

Two warnings for newbies — it stinks, and it can cause breakouts in some. The distinctive odor, caused by the potent mix of vitamin C, ferulic acid, and phloretin, can be a bit much to handle — but trust me when I say it's worth enduring. And you do get used to it eventually, so there's that.

SkinCeuticals Phloretin CF Gel, $163, available at SkinCeuticals.

Medicated pads bring me back to the days of standing in front of my mirror and furiously rubbing at my acne with an Oxy pad. Thank god I finally learned to stop doing that. Noted dermatologist and acne slayer Dennis Gross, MD, has created a much more sophisticated, effective, and way less harsh product that gives you the convenience of pre-soaked pads without all the burning pain.

Salicylic acid is again the star ingredient here, and it's used to clear pores, soothe new breakouts, flatten blemishes (key in helping you conceal them more effectively), prevent new ones from cropping up, and fade those pesky dark marks. It gets pimples at every stage of their life span — which with this product is mercifully quicker than that of your average breakout.

Important to note: It can cause some stinging, so start off using it once a week and see how you feel.

Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare One Step Acne Eliminating Pads, $38, available at Sephora.

Products with vitamin C almost always trumpet their brightening abilities. And yes, the ingredient is great at making dull skin look more vibrant. The unadvertised perk is that, in the right product formulation, it can also work gangbusters on erasing redness.

PTR's overnight mask uses camu camu berry, which the brand claims has 30 times the vitamin C of an orange. I don't know about that (must have forgotten my vitamin-level detector at home), but I do know I have never used a vitamin C product this effective at treating acne scars.

One night of wearing this, and a severe cheek breakout (screw you, hormones) was significantly less noticeable the next morning. I used it five nights in a row and kept seeing even better results.

It plateaued after that, so I've been switching it up with the By Terry serum for a twice-weekly treatment. My skin future has never looked brighter.

Peter Thomas Roth Camu Camu Power C x 30 Vitamin C Brightening Sleeping Mask, $62, available at Sephora.

Another power pigment eradicator is glycolic acid. Less sticky and irritating on sensitive skin than salicylic, glycolic purges pores of blackheads, exfoliates the dead skin that can lead to clogged pores in the first place, and lightens existing pigmentation.

Drunk Elephant T.L.C. Framboos Glycolic Night Serum, $90, available at Sephora.

This incredibly effective new moisturizer was made for brightening, but it goes above and beyond the call of duty with smoothing glycolic and lactic acids, exfoliating fruit enzymes, and naturally hydrating squalane. It's basically a one-and-done for all your dark spot-fading, dullness-fighting needs.

Kate Somerville ExfoliKate Glow Moisturizer, $65, available at Kate Somerville.

Kypris' Moonlight Catalyst also employs exfoliating acids like punkin enzymes and alpha-hydroxy acids to fight acne and lighten hyper-pigmentation. It also contains rosehip and sea buckthorn extract to hydrate the skin.

Kypris Moonlight Catalyst, $72, available at Kypris.

This overnight treatment not only targets active acne, but reduces the redness and appearance of leftover acne scars as well. With the help of a potent glycolic acid formula (over 20%), the swab works while you sleep for an at-home peel that won't leave your skin stripped dry.

Peter Thomas Roth 20% Glycolic Solutions Jumbo Peel Swab, $48, available at Sephora.

As you know from our constant musings on the subject, retinol has long been praised for its ability to both keep skin clear and gradually even skin tone. (Plus, a whole lot more.) There are countless options to try, but we have a fondness for Hollywood aesthetician Shani Darden 's formula. It doesn't dry out skin, even though it's packed with 5% retinol and 5% lactic acid.

Pro tip: Apply in the evening, after cleansing, while skin is still damp — and allow it to fully soak in (about 15 minutes) before topping with anything else.

Resurface by Shani Darden Retinol Reform, $95, available at Shani Darden Skin Care.

In just four weeks, this vitamin B3 and C cream promises to fade light scarring left from your past blemishes.

Pond's Correcting Cream Clarant B3 Dark Spot Normal to Oily Skin, $8.19, available at Target.

Lemon and salicylic acid fight your spots... and the applicator's rollerball cools you off in the process.Win-win!

FORMULA 10.0.6 On Your Mark Blemish Mark Fader, $7.99, available at Ulta.

Here's What You Should Know About New York's New Paid Family Leave Program

$

0

Diana Limongi, who works at a university in New York City, returned to work four months after giving birth to her daughter last year. This was the maximum amount of time she was able to take — unpaid — through the federal Family and Medical Leave Act. Even though her self-employed husband and her mom helped her out, it didn't feel like enough for the Astoria, Queens, mother of two.

Now that there's a new paid family leave program in effect in New York state, which gives most workers up to eight weeks of leave to care for a new child, sick loved one, or to assist when a family member is deployed in the military, Limongi is taking advantage of it. "It's a good time for me to be with her," she says of her 10-month-old daughter Sofia, who, between teething and being breastfed, needs a lot of care right now.

While Limongi says she's looking forward to spending time with her baby daughter, she wishes things were easier for new moms in the U.S. On her blog, she's advocated for paid family leave nationwide, and she shares that taking unpaid leave last year was a "huge burden." Her credit score took a hit, she and her husband used their Roth IRA to pay their mortgage, and they were putting groceries on their credit card.

"When I became a mom, I started discovering all these things we don't have," she says, pointing out the oft-cited fact that the U.S. is the only developed country without federally mandated paid maternity leave. She added that her company was slow to provide information about the new program, which certainly didn't help.

What is New York's new paid family leave law?

Enacted in 2016, New York's law provides private-sector and eligible public-sector employees up to eight weeks of partially paid leave. This wage is set to increase from 50% to 55% in 2019, 60% in 2020, and 67% in 2021. It's capped at $652.96 a week. The law allows workers to care for a newborn, adopted, or foster child; care for a seriously ill or injured loved one; or assist loved ones when a family member is deployed abroad.

What states currently have similar laws?

New York is now one of four states in the country to pass and implement paid family leave. California was the first in 2004, offering eligible employees at least 55% of their wages for up to six weeks. Starting January 1 this year, the benefits increased to 60 to 70% of wages. In 2009, New Jersey started offering paid family leave at up to two-thirds of a person's wages with a cap of $524 per week for up to six weeks. Rhode Island allows employees up to four weeks of paid leave at maximum $752 per week.

What are the law's most major benefits?

A crucial aspect of the law is job protection: It lets you focus on your family, knowing that you can get right back to work without losing your job. Molly Williamson, staff attorney at A Better Balance, an organization that advocates for and educates about the law, says in an interview that this particularly helps low-income women. "For low-income women, paid family leave means the end of the impossible choice between being there for your family when they need you the most — when a new child arrives or a health crisis looms — and the job that pays the bills," she says. "The ability to take the leave you need also has major health and economic benefits that continue throughout women's lives, from reduced postpartum depression to increased attachment to the workforce."

Being able to take time off without worrying about their finances taking a hit also increases men's role in caregiving, Ellen Bravo, co-executive director of Family Values @ Work, tells Refinery29. For example, when paid leave was implemented in Rhode Island, during the first year nearly one-third of all leave-takers were men. Plus, studies show U.S. fathers who take longer paternity leave are more involved in caring for their children nine months down the road. "There will be more sharing of caregiving responsibilities."

At a recent press conference, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said it was the passing of his own father, former Governor Mario Cuomo, that inspired him to work to launch the new policy. "You know, when you look back, what are the moments that matter? When the child is born? People get married? Who's there for you when you're sick? Do you get quality time to spend when someone is passing and they need peace, and they need relaxation? That's what life is really all about," he said.

Could you be stigmatized for taking leave?

While it's illegal for your employer to punish you for taking leave, "many people still worry about speaking up for their rights," says Williamson. If you need help talking to your boss or just want more information, A Better Balance runs a free, confidential legal hotline in English and Spanish at 1-833-NEED-ABB.

What's on the horizon for the rest of the country?

Momentum in Congress for paid family leave is rising, with New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand and Connecticut Rep. Rosa DeLauro working earlier this year to introduce the Family And Medical Insurance Leave (FAMILY) Act, modeled on successful state programs, which would provide workers with up to 12 weeks of partial income. "We're in a really interesting time for this issue," says Vicki Shabo, the VP for workplace policies and strategies at the National Partnership for Women & Families.

Just this year on January 1, paid sick-leave laws took effect in St. Paul, MN; Rhode Island; Vermont; and Washington. Both in Washington state and Washington, D.C., paid family and medical leave laws were enacted in 2017 and will take effect in 2019 and 2020. And in Massachusetts, lawmakers are considering a paid family and medical leave bill.

But there's still a lot of work to be done. The vast majority of states still don't have paid-leave policies; nationally, 32% of private-sector workers aren't able to earn a single sick day; and just 15% of workers have access to paid family leave through their employers. Lower-wage workers are disproportionately affected.

"It's time for real solutions," says Shabo. "We know the public is behind these policies, so it's time to make them happen."

The Beauty Trend You Should Try This Year, Based On Your Sign

There's no time like the beginning of a new year to try something different. For some, that might mean giving up alcohol for a Dry January. For others, it's making a commitment to cook at home instead of relying on Seamless every night. But the most fun resolutions are the ones that let you do more, not less, so repeat after us: When it comes to beauty, nothing is off-limits in 2018.

Whether it's "upside down" liner that makes every eye color pop, glitter that works at the club and the office, or a unique highlight, there are endless makeup looks to try... but how do you know where to start? Easy — tap into the zodiac and leave your look to the stars.

We asked Jennifer Angel, astrologist and spiritual life coach, which beauty trends will best flatter each sign. How can astrology inspire your lipstick of choice? Angel says that your signs (yes, there are several based on your birth chart) are a connection to your spiritual self. So even if you don't keep up with your weekly horoscope or know what a rising sign is, translating your astrologic personality into a beauty look is a creative expression of who you are. Plus, it pushes you out of your comfort zone so you can be your best self in what we expect to be an exciting year.

Click ahead to for Angel's insight on the trends that will take your beauty game from 0 to 100. A new you awaits...

Ready to launch into the new year but not sure where to start? Take a cue from the stars and let your horoscope guide you.'Scope the rest of your year here.

If you're an Aries, try red highlighter.

Angel explains that Aries is ruled by the passion planet Mars, so it only makes sense that they might gravitate towards this fiery highlighter-meets-draping trend that flatters just about every skin tone. Demonstrated at the Fenty Puma by Rihanna Spring/Summer 2018 show, the flushed look is ready to replace every Champagne shimmer you own. Makeup artist Karla Duarte tells us that the warm hue is will take over thanks to how approachable the finished look is compared to an opalescent or unicorn shade.

Fenty Beauty Match Stix Shimmer Skinstick in Ridiiic, $25, available at Sephora.

If you're a Taurus, try upside down eyeliner.

Made popular by celebrity makeup artist Patrick Ta, the reverse look is one that stands out no matter how minimal the rest of your makeup/hair/outfit is. Angel says that it's time for Taurus to speak up this year and never take no for an answer. And there's nothing quite like flipping a classic look on its head to make your presence known. If anyone is ready to break a beauty boundary, it's Taurus.

Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Finish, $20, available at Urban Decay.

If you're a Gemini, try two-toned eyeshadow.

Two-toned eyes are both a little weird and completely rad. Geminis are famous for their chatty nature, but this look-at-me trend will have everyone talking about them — in a good way. "With a solar and lunar eclipse this coming year in your area of communication and creativity, it’s time for a new look that gets everyone talking," Angel says.

NARS Duo Eyeshadow in Kauai, $36, available at NARS.

If you're a Cancer, try gloss... everywhere.

Love, and a lot of it, is on the horizon for Cancers. Good thing, too, because Cancers are all about igniting the romance. Angel tells us that as a moon sign, Cancers should play up their intensity with an allover glossy look. Your next date night eye is guaranteed to be on point.

Milk Makeup Eye Vinyl in Light Rail, $20, available at Milk Makeup.

If you're a Leo, try thumbprint eyeliner.

Thumbprint eyeliner, the sultry, smoky style every cat-eye amateur has been waiting for, dominated Spring/Summer 2018 fashion week, so now's the time to embrace it and make it your own. Angel tells us that with both eclipses lunar and solar, Leo will be in rapid change, ending and beginning a new spiritual cycle. Plan to focus the attention on being true to who you are and basking in your own circle of power. There's no one better to lead the pack on this celeb-approved look than a confident Leo.

Marc Jacobs Beauty Highliner Matte Gel Eye Crayon Eyeliner in Earth(quake), $25, available at Sephora.

If you're a Virgo, try inner-eye strobing.

Breaking out of a rut is all about challenging the usual. Highlighter on the inner corners of the eyes is nothing new, but with the subtle adjustment of a bold color, it'll make all the difference. Despite how traditional Virgos tend to be, Angel tells us that it's their year to tap into their social and creative side. Time to skip the same old routine and move on to brighter horizons.

ColourPop Honeymoon Super Shock Highlighter, $5.60, available at ColourPop.

If you're a Libra, try allover eye color.

Hopefully you're ready to be in the spotlight because 2018 is your year for some major attention. And there's nothing more commanding than a monochromatic allover shadow look like this, as seen at Moschino Spring/Summer 2018. Skip the neutrals in favor of some electricity this time around. Angel tells us that since Libra is ruled by Venus, they're totally in their element when wearing hits of color like this — glamorous with a side of DGAF.

Chanel Ombre Première Longwear Cream Eyeshadow, $36, available at Chanel.

If you're a Scorpio, try sunshine eyes.

According to Angel, Jupiter, the planet of abundance, is in Scorpio until next November. So, it's safe to say it's time to expect a lot of success coming your way. What better to manifest those riches than with a gilded look that screams luxury?

Make Up For Ever Aqua XL Color Paint in M-40, $25, at Make Up For Ever.

If you're a Sagittarius, try not-so-grown-up glitter.

Saturn just left Sagittarius — and all inhibitions went with it. It's time to bust loose and play up your flirtatious vibes. Angel says there's nothing like a full-on glitter look made for partying at Studio 54 to make that happen.

Photo: Thierry Chesnot/Getty Images.

Stila Cosmetics Magnificent Metals Glitter & Glow Liquid Eye Shadow, $24, available at Stila Cosmetics.

If you're a Capricorn, try golden highlighter.

Angel tells us it's your shot to lay the groundwork for some big successes down the line. It's been 29 years since Saturn moved into Capricorn, the primary sign the planet governs. Angel says that the first quarter of the new year will be a make-or-break moment for the sign that will have you going for the gold, literally.

Photo: Bryan Bedder/Getty Images.

Dior Diorskin Nude Air Luminizer Powder in 003, $56, available at Dior.

If you're an Aquarius, try don't-fuck-with-me red lips.

If you want to break a glass ceiling, reach for a red lip. It brings out every ounce of confidence you have deep inside — so it's time to blow the dust off your old favorite sitting at the bottom of your makeup bag. "Eclipses are in Aquarius and right opposite their sign in 2018, so there is no time to be shy," she explains. Now is the time to face your fears and demand your worth with a bold attitude and even bolder lipstick.

Laura Mercier Velour Extreme Matte Lipstick in Dominate, $28, available at Nordstrom.

If you're a Pisces, try Twiggy lashes.

Angel tells us that the 12th house is all about wishes, hopes, and dreams; Pisces are like the windows to the soul. They're highly intuitive and will rarely go against their gut when it comes to important decisions. And with your head often in the clouds, why not highlight your best feature with this easy look that is as dreamy as it is timeless.

Lancôme Monsieur Big Mascara, $25, available at Sephora.

Photographer Bruce Weber Has (Finally) Responded To Sexual Assault Claims

Update: More than a month later, photographer Bruce Weber has responded to the dual sexual assault allegations brought against him. To recap: Last month, models and Jason Boyce filed lawsuits against Weber, citing accusations of sexual misconduct during photoshoots from over a decade, and five years ago, respectively. The photographer addressed the claims in an Instagram post.

"I want to address the recent allegations made against me. I unequivocally deny these charges and will vigorously defend myself," Weber writes. "I have spent my career capturing the human spirit through photographs and am confident that, in due time, the truth will prevail. I am grateful for the outpouring of support I have received." Since filing the lawsuits, no other models have come forth with similar allegations of misconduct. But this is Weber's first public acknowledgement of the situation.

A post shared by Bruce Weber (@bruce_weber) on

The statement itself sounds a lot like previous responses from industry figures accused of similar misconduct, but Weber insists the truth will surface in due time. We've reached out to Bruce Weber's studio for comment, again, and will update this story if/when we hear back.

This article was originally published on December 1st, 2017.

As the media, entertainment, and tech industries continue to watch its powerful figures fall from grace, the fashion industry joins suit. After the ousting of Terry Richardson by Condé Nast, more and more models have come forward with claims of alleged sexual abuse within the industry. As reported by the NY Post, the latest fashion photographer to face such claims is Bruce Weber, who is known for his images in magazines like Vogue and Vanity Fair, including brands like Abercrombie & Fitch and Ralph Lauren. Model-actor Jason Boyce filed a lawsuit to the Manhattan Supreme Court alleging sexual misconduct and abuse against the photographer.

In the suit, Boyce details his experience from a December 2014 casting session in the photographer's Manhattan studio. The claims include Weber asking Boyce to remove his clothes — a request usually made, but not required with the current state of protections for models, in advance of a project — and forced him to rub his own genitals, including sucking on Boyce's fingers. The model obeyed his demands, and much more, all of which are detailed in the suit papers obtained by the Post. Boyced was instructed by his former agent to "nail" the job because of Weber's influence in the industry. At the time of the alleged incident, Boyce was 28, and Weber, 68.

Boyce further claims that after frequent attempts made by Weber to get in touch, he states to have either delayed or denied any further interactions with the photographer. After reporting back to his then-agent at Soul Artist Management that the experience was "weird," Boyce moved to California and never returned to modeling again. According to court papers, the aftermath induced bouts of anxiety, depression, and high stress levels. "Mr. Boyce felt intense dread at the thought of a modeling career in an industry where Mr. Weber was considered by many to be a top photographer and primary champion of male models. He was worried that he would continue to run into Mr. Weber throughout his career."

Though the Post reports that the suit includes claims of Boyce's former agents at Soul Artist Management being cognizant of similar allegations with other male models, inadvertently suggesting there may be more stories to come, Boyce's motion is the first official claim filed against Weber. Following the similarly prolonged ousting of Richardson, the industry has been vocal in its attempt to right similar wrongs. But many, like Weber, continue to work.

In addition to models themselves speaking up about their own and other's abuse, former model and Model Alliance founder Sara Ziff has devoted her career to the ethical treatment and protection of models. Most recently, she was instrumental in introducing a House bill alongside New York Assemblywoman Nily Rozic that seeks to legalize the protection of models from sexual harassment on the job, as currently, there are none. Upon hearing news of the allegations put forth against Weber, Ziff provided Refinery29 with a statement that both reiterates that sexual abuse within the modeling industry is widespread, and doesn't discriminate between genders.

"The issue of sexual misconduct has come to the fore in various industries, and fashion and modeling are no exception. Sexual abuse in the workplace is rampant in the modeling industry, which currently lacks adequate legal protections for its mostly young, vulnerable workforce. Although female victims more often tend to be the focus, men are also vulnerable of being victims of sexual abuse. It can be doubly difficult for male models to report predatory behavior by other men in the workplace because there remains a stigma.

"Many models have spoken out about sexual abuse on the job, but our safety and wellbeing has clearly and consistently come second to the business interests of industry figures with longstanding working relationships. Modeling agencies are supposed to represent the best interests of their talent, but too often they have turned a blind eye to predatory photographers and others who are known to abuse their power.

"More needs to be done to address the pervasive problem of sexual abuse in the fashion and modeling industries. The Model Alliance is working closely with government officials and industry stakeholders as we move toward implementing solutions. We aim to bring about much needed, systemic change to the fashion industry, and are working to create a safe work environment."

Ziff adds that anyone who wishes to report sexual misconduct experienced or witnessed in the fashion industry can contact the Model Alliance for help and support. We've reached out to MVA Management, whom Boyce lists as his current representation via his Instagram bio, and Bruce Weber's studio for comment and will update this story if/when we hear back.

H&M Is Launching A New Affordable Luxury Brand, Nyden

Following the recent success of H&M x Erdem's collaboration collection in November, the H&M Group has announced that it will unveil a new brand early this year called Nyden.

Targeted specifically to the millennial population, Nyden — which fuses the Swedish words "ny," meaning new; and "den," meaning it — will not follow a traditional business model. Headed by Oscar Olsson, who's worked at H&M since 2013, most recently as the head of their Innovation Lab, Nyde will work as a collaborative label of sorts. Olsson will work with select "tribe leaders" to create the collections. His first choices are the tattoo artist Doctor Woo, and the Swedish actress Noomi Rapace who starred in the original Swedish trilogy of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.

According to H&M, Nyden's launch is a "smaller start-up" so there won't suddenly be /Nyden stores everywhere, the way we are used to seeing H&M's almost everywhere in the world. Talking to The Cut, Olsson explained that Nyden's audience is decidedly younger, savvier and interested in genuine brand experience. The "Netocrats" as he calls them, "[are] more sensitive than ever to credibility, authenticity, and personality. They’re also more sensitive than ever to exploitation of themselves or other people."

Though the exact launch date hasn't been revealed, clothes will be available through e-commerce, and immersive pop-up events. You can also sign up on the Nyden website for more information. Looks like a trip to Europe might be in order soon!

A Tarot Reader Weighs In On What's In Store For 2018

$

As 2017 fades into the background, most people can agree on one thing: Last year was a wild and uncomfortable ride. For those who consult the tarot, this came as no surprise. Overall, 2017 was governed by the Wheel of Fortune, tarot’s hand of fate. This meant that things were going to change for better or worse — and whether we liked it or not.

Because of this volatility, we’re approaching 2018 exhausted to the core and anxious about what’s next. Will this year be a repeat of the last? Can things get better? Or worse?

Let’s begin by finding out the general theme for 2018. You can figure that out by adding up the numbers in the year itself (2+0+1+8). The result is 11, which corresponds to Justice, meaning that 2018 will be ruled by Justice.

Read on to discover what that entails, and what else the tarot has to say about 2018.

Theresa Reed as been a professional, full-time tarot reader for more than 25 years. She is the host of the popular podcast, Tarot Bytes , and the author of The Tarot Coloring Book. Theresa lives in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

This year’s theme: Justice

According to tarot, Justice indicates that the consequences of our past actions are coming due. The scales of justice seek to balance, which means karmic debts must be paid. Wrongs are ready to be righted and calls for fairness will become stronger.

After last’s years twists of fate and many changes, we’re adjusting to our new norm — and gearing up to fight for what’s right. Legal issues, diplomacy, and matters around human rights will be center stage. This marks a time when we can put our own interests to the side in order to ensure that everyone gets a fair shake.

For better or worse, things will work out the way that they need to. As the saying goes: What goes around comes around, and we must trust that Justice will prevail.

So what can tarot tell us about seeking fairness and doing the right thing, even when the odds seem against us? Click ahead to see the three cards I pulled for 2018, which reflect the present, the future, and what you should do.

The present: Six of Wands

The Six of Wands indicates that victory is ahead. In this card, the figures support a leader and it’s possible that there may be fresh leaders emerging, which could take things in an entirely new direction. This is a victory of the people.

Think about the leaders you want to support. Who do you want to get behind? Which people might be setting the example of justice for all? Look to those people to lead the way. And if you cannot find them, step up. Maybe it’s time for you to take the reins.

The future: Page of Cups

The Page of Cups is a messenger and a good one at that. He brings the message of love and hope. After the chaos of 2017, people want to be inspired again. They need to see that the dream is still possible. There is a glimmer of something happening now. Inspirational people may rise up in the coming year, guiding us to envision a better future for all. Now is the time for all kinds of people to stand up and change the vibration. That begins with each and every one of us. Don’t let hate win. Let love rule.

What you should do: The High Priestess

Although it may appear that everything is being uprooted by the patriarchy, there is something brewing underneath the surface. Feminine consciousness has been developing, and it’s getting ready to come out in full force. This will be the year of the woman and feminine intelligence. Trust your instincts all year long. It will not steer you wrong. Do not let matters of the world ruffle your feathers or dim your light. No matter what is happening, be serene, calm, and totally in your power. Take care of Mother Earth — and each other.

The High Priestess often works behind the scenes. Which means you need to do the right thing, even if no one is watching. Those little acts in secret may be the grease that gets the wheels of Justice turning in the right direction.
